Police officers on Friday July 16, 2021 opened fire at Ntuene primary school, injuring several pupils in an effort to arrest one of their teachers.
According to reports, the officers fired in the air about five times to scare away the pupils who were protesting the arrest of their teacher.
The pupils are said to have pelted stones at the police in protest of the arrest.
A source who spoke to one of the leading local dailies indicated that the police opened fire after they were overwhelmed by the pupils.
Ntuene Primary school headteacher Angello Kamenchu has condemned the incident, saying that the police acted unprofessional by opening fire in school in the presence of the children.
“They should have arrested her at home. The officers used excessive force. They tore her clothes in the arrest process,” the headteacher stated.
Reports further indicated the police stormed the school to arrest the teacher while pupils were in the assembly for their closing day parade. The teacher allegedly had a dispute with a local trader.
