The National Police Service on Monday revealed how one can identify a fake police officer. While talking in a local radio station, Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso confirmed that a number of fake cops have been on the rise.
H e revealed that fake cops normally go after the members of the public and sometimes forcefully take money from them in what he termed the act as ‘unprofessional.’
The police boss further said that it is important for a police officer to identify themselves because of the nature of their work. He said because the police are powerful people and some people can take advantage of this to give people sleepless night.
The spokesperson said that officers should always be in uniform and if they are known, they can be allowed to carry out operations. According to Shioso, it is very important for one to demand for identification from officers who are dressed in uniforms.
He added that one can prove the name of the officer and number by looking at their job tags. “If a police has uniform, they can have a name tag so that a reasonable person can know that this is a police officer,” he said.
He also declared that if an officer is armed and he is in the public domain, there is no need of causing drama.
He said it was important for officers in civilians to identify themselves since imposters usually take advantage of this.
This come barely a week after activist Boniface Mwangi got involved in a wrangle with uniformed police officers in a building located in Nairobi’s CBD.
The activist asked the GSU officers who were in uniform to also ask three individuals who were in plain clothes to produce IDs.
