Police Launch Investigation After IED Explodes in Mandera

A multi-agency security team has launched investigation into an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that occurred on Monday, April 7, at an eatery in Shafshafey area of Mandera, leaving one person injured.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement issued on Monday night said that the security team that responded swiftly to the incident had established that the explosion had blown off the hotel’s rooftop and caused visible cracks in the walls.

At the time of the incident, four customers were inside the eatery. Three of them escaped unhurt, while one individual sustained a fractured left femur and pellet injuries to the abdomen.

The injured victim was promptly rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two of those who escaped unhurt are the masterminds behind the attack. They have since been apprehended and are currently in custody as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, officers are pursuing a bodaboda rider who brought the suspects to the hotel and fled immediately after the incident.
