The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has responded to Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria after he claimed that a section of its clerks were being used to rig the Kiambaa by-election.

Moses Kuria through his official Facebook account on Thursday July 15 claimed that IEBC clerks from Kingothua Primary polling station had sneaked out KIEMS kits and that they were using them to conduct voting at Valentine growers plantation.

Kuria went ahead to share pictures of the vehicle that was allegedly being used to ferry the clerks, arguing that he had tried to reach out to IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati but he was not picking his calls.

However, IEBC in response to the claims said that Moses Kuria was making false allegations. The electoral agency noted that the said vehicle is one of its vehicles and that it was being used by the commission’s staff who are providing technical support in the polling process in Kiambaa.

“The car in question is an IEBC vehicle being used by Commission staff who are providing technical support to the polling process. The post by Moses Kuria is therefore a false allegation,” tweeted IEBC.

Cate Waruguru with Ruto

Laikipia County Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru has broken her silence on claims that she has joined Deputy President William Ruto’s camp.

Reports had circulated on social media that the controversial lawmaker had ditched the ruling Jubilee party to join DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

While addressing the media on Wednesday July 14, Waruguru claimed that the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party is in limbo.

According to her, much needs to be done to restore the public confidence in the ruling party.

“There has been a massive exodus from the Jubilee Party and I have seen speculations from the members of the public asking whether Waruguru has moved to the ‘wheelbarrow’ side. My answer to their speculations is relative, every serious politician, you listen to your electorates. I am on my own. My bosses are the voters and the people of Laikipia,” Waruguru said.

She further noted that she will be making an announcement very soon telling the country of her decision.

The MP added that the people will be the ones to decide as to which side they would like to vote in terms of the parties.

Amos Kimunya

National Assembly Majority leader Amos Kimunya was on Thursday July 15 kicked out of a polling station by rowdy youths during the ongoing Kiambaa by-election.

The Kipipiri MP was ordered out of Kimuga Polling Station by the group of youths shortly after he arrived, accusing him of interfering with the voting exercise.

According to the youths, Kimunya is neither an agent nor a voter at any polling station in Kiambaa. They insisted that he had no any business in the region and ordered him out.

The MP’s efforts to calm down the youths failed as they continued to shout “Kimunya must go”.

Kimunya finally left the venue after being escorted out of the centre by GSU officers, sparking celebration from the youths.

Normalcy has hence been restored at the polling station, with the voting process going on well.

The voting exercise kicked off today at 6:20 am and will continue throughout the day. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned politicians against interfering with the exercise.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday evening, Kiambaa Returning Officer Peter Muigai said political parties’ super agents will not be allowed in the polling stations.

The Kiambaa parliamentary seat fell vacant following the passing on of MP Paul Koinange on March 31.

Jubilee’s Kariri Njama is facing off United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate John Njuguna Wanjiku in a high-stakes vote pitting President Uhuru Kenyatta against his deputy William Ruto.

Other candidates in the by-election include Richard Njoroge (The New Democrats Party), Isaac Karomo (Federal Party of Kenya), Willie Mbugua (Independent), David Mugo (Independent), Evans Wainaina (Independent), Njoroge Harrison (Independent) among others.

Jubilee party candidate in the Kiambaa by-election Karanja Kariri Njama has broken his silence over claims that he has pulled out of the mini poll.

Speaking shortly after speculations that he had pulled out of the hotly contested race, Kariri Njama dismissed the claims, arguing that the rumours are being spread by his opponents who have already sensed defeat.

Reports had emerged that a section of Kiambaa constituency voters had started receiving text messages alleging that Kariri Njama had pulled out of the race.

Blogger Robert Alai took to his official Twitter account to accuse the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party of accessing the Kiambaa voters’ database and sent messages to them saying that the Jubilee candidate had withdrawn. Dailytrends.co.ke cannot, however, substantiate the blogger’s allegation, since that is his own opinion.

The highly anticipated Kiambaa by-election is set for Thursday, July 15, and stakes in the mini poll are high.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission cleared eight candidates to compete in the race. Kariri Njama will fly the ruling Jubilee Party’s flag in the Kiambaa by-election.

He was awarded the party’s ticket to run for the parliamentary seat after emerging as the best candidate following rigorous interviews conducted by the outfit’s officials.

UDA party associated with Deputy President William Ruto unveiled John Njuguna Wanjiku as its flagbearer in the contest.

The Kiambaa MP seat fell vacant following the death of Paul Koinange on Wednesday, March 31. Koinange was elected Kiambaa MP on a Jubilee Party ticket in the 2017 General Election.

Oparanya

Kakamega County Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has urged the National government to intervene and help his government get the new 1,000 liter per minute capacity oxygen plant which is being held by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) at Mombasa Port over taxes.

According to Oparanya, KRA is demanding a total of Sh 8 million in taxes from the contractor who is currently unable to pay the said amount.

Through a statement posted on his official social media accounts on Wednesday July 07, 2021, Oparanya appealed to the Ministry of Health and the National Treasury to assist and enable the plant to be cleared and installed.

He said the equipment should be released to help save lives of his people during this Covid-19 pandemic, urging the National government not to impose heavy taxes on equipment that are critical to save lives.

“I appeal to the @MOH_Kenya to assist and enable the plant be cleared at the Port and installed to save lives during this Covid-19 pandemic. I urge the Government not to impose heavy taxes on equipment that are critical to save lives,” Oparanya tweeted.

Business mogul-cum politician Suleiman Shahbal has officially ditched President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee party for Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Through a statement dated July 6, 2021, the former Mombasa County gubernatorial aspirant said that he had officially resigned as a member of the ruling party following his announcement to join the Orange party.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the Jubilee Party leadership for the support offered to me throughout my membership,” Shahbal said.

He further noted that he was going to put his efforts in ensuring the merger between Jubilee and ODM parties is realised.

Image

His move comes less than a decade since he quit the party, after losing the ODM nominations to Governor Hassan Joho in 2013.

Shahbal shocked his supporters when he defected to UDF from ODM, and then to Wiper Party, all in a matter of weeks.

He moved to Wiper on January 19, 2013, after three of his agents were allegedly roughed up by ODM supporters at the height of the contest for the orange party’s nomination.

Last month, Shahbal, who was addressing the Mombasa Luo Focus Group, expressed his interest in succeeding Governor Joho whose second term is ending in the next 13 months.

He rallied his support behind ODM leader Raila Odinga urging his audience at the forum to consider Raila’s presidential bid in 2022.

The businessman also pushed for unity between Raila and Kalonzo, adding that he would be happy if he saw the duo at the helm of the country’s leadership.

Raila on Saturday resisted pressure from party supporters to endorse Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir for the Mombasa governorship.

Both Nassir and Shahbal have declared interest in suceeding Joho. They are both angling for Raila’s blessings as they seek to run on the ODM party ticket.

Nassir is banking on his loyalty to the party to receive Raila’s blessings while Shahbal is hoping his friendship with the former Prime Minister and his financial muscle will endear him to the ODM leadership.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has mourned former Vice President Moody Awori’s brother Aggrey Awori.

Aggrey, a former ICT minister in Uganda, passed away on Monday at around 2pm while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Naalya, Kampala.

In a statement issued through his secretariat on Tuesday July 6, 2021, Raila said that his family was saddened by the passing on of Aggrey, whom he termed as a long-standing family friend. He has mourned him as a true manifestation of the spirit of East Africa integration and Pan-Africanism.

“Mama Ida and I have been deeply saddened by the passing of our long-standing family friend Hon Aggrey Awori. Aggrey was a true manifestation of the spirit of East Africa integration and Pan-Africanism,” the statement reads in part.

He further gave thanks for Aggrey’s remarkable service for Kenya and Uganda, noting that the two families had a long history of friendship which was started by their fathers, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Jeremiah Musungu Awori.

Raila also remarked how Awori represented Uganda in the 110 metres hurdles during the 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics.

He noted that their friendship dates back when Aggrey’s father, the pioneer African Canon for the Anglican Church used to come at their home to offer prayers whenever Jaramogi Oginga Odinga had any function.

Raila also remarked having worked with Aggrey Awori at the University of Nairobi.

Awori had a Master of Arts in economics from Syracuse University in the US.

In 1967, Awori was appointed the first local director of Uganda Television (UTV).

In 1971 he was incarcerated for two months for failing to broadcast a speech delivered to him during Idi Amin’s first coup attempt.

He went sought asylum in Kenya where he taught political journalism at the University of Nairobi until 1976 when he left Kenya to travel to other parts of Africa.

Awori served as Minister for Information and Communications Technology from February 16, 2009 to May 27, 2011.

He was born on February 23, 1939 to Canon Jeremiah Musungu Awori, an Anglican preacher and Mariamu Odongo Awori, a nurse and community teacher.

Aggrey was the 10th of the 17 children. His siblings include; Kenya’s ninth Vice President Moody Awori and Mary Okelo, the founder of Kenya’s women only bank; the Kenya Women Finance Trust.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) Co-principals Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula are planning to sue the Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party over political parties’ funding.

The trio is also planning to officially withdraw from NASA after a fallout with the Orange party.

According to Mudavadi, the three coalition partners, Amani National Congress (ANC), Wiper and Ford Kenya are already formulating paperwork that will see the end to NASA coalition. The coalition agreement stipulates that NASA can only cease to exist if three partners decide to pull out.

The trio want to sue Raila Odinga’s party over political parties’ funds that have been disbursed to ODM since 2017.

Bungoma Senator and the Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula said public resources have been channeled to one of the coalition’s partners who has completely refused to account, which he says may lead to legal challenges.

As NASA affiliates, Wetang’ula says they shall seek remedies legally starting with arbitration, tribunal and “maybe eventually the High Court”.

Wetang’ula further noted that Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka was mandated to address the issue with the ODM party leader but Odinga and ODM are said to have snubbed any negotiations with Kalonzo for the last six months.

A meeting that was meant to happen on May 7 failed to happen, after ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya failed to show up, further complicating the matter.

ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna has however rubbished the matter, claiming that ODM does not owe anything to the three parties.

A Nairobi police officer has been arrested after he allegedly pushed his girlfriend over a balcony from fourth floor of an apartment they were living.

According to reports, the officer who was on the run for two days surrendered on Sunday night and was escorted to Kasarani police station by his collegues who were privy to the matter.

The officer is said to have denied pushing the girlfriend in an incident that occurred on July 3, 2021.

According to Kasarani sub-county Commander Peter Mwanzo, the officer is being interrogated to determine what really happened as the girlfriend’s body awaits a post-mortem which is due on Tuesday July 06, 2021.

Witnesses said the middle-aged woman identified as Jackline Muthoni died after she fell on the rear windscreen of a salon car that had been parked outside.

She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). The main suspect in the incident managed to flee before the police arrived.

According to police, the officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters has been having domestic issues with the woman.

Most of the incidents are linked to mental issues, which are linked to the work of the police.

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai launched a program to provide police officers with psychological assistance.

Dubbed “Muamko Mpya-Healing the Uniform” the program strives to create and hold safe spaces in police stations, offices, camps, colleges and communities thus enhancing peer to peer support for officers to feel safe enough and dignified to share their stories and experiences of stress, anguish and trauma in a confidential and non-judgemental environment.

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has broken its silence after claims that two of its officers had raided lawyer Dr John Khaminwa’s offices on Saturday July 3, 2021.

Through a statement posted via its social media handles on Sunday morning, the anti-graft agency distanced itself from any operations that allegedly took place at Dr Khaminwa’s offices.

The commission said that the media reports suggesting that EACC visited the offices of the Senior Counsel are unfounded.

“EACC wishes to notify the public that it did not conduct any operation yesterday and media reports suggesting that EACC visited the offices of John Khaminwa Senior Counsel are unfounded,” the commission posted.

Reports on Saturday emerged that that police officers had visited Khaminwa’s office following his submission on the BBI case on Friday, July 2.

Commenting on the matter, Khaminwa dismissed reports that police officers visited him, rather, he noted that imposters stopped by and asked for money. He added that the impersonaters referred to a matter that the firm had previously handled.

“They claimed to be police officers on duty but I did not get the impression that they were officers at all. They asked for money but we did not give them,” Khaminwa stated.

Residents of Bar Atheng in Ugunja, Siaya County were on Saturday July 3, 2021 treated to a drama when former police spokesperson Charles Owino and Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi publicly clashed during the burial of 2017 Siaya Woman Representative aspirant Florence Aluodo.

Siaya County Governor Cornell Rasanga’s 2022 succession politics took center stage as Owino and Wandayi vowed to outsmart each other in the 2022 Siaya Gubernatorial race.

Mr. Owino said that will be seeking the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket in the upcoming nominations, daring Mr. Wandayi to rig him out.

While trying to woo voters, the long-serving police boss promised to transform the county for the better.

Mr Owino, who has since been moved to the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons as a deputy director, accused Mr Wandayi of conspiring to deny Ms Aluodo victory despite winning the ODM primaries in 2017.

Mr Wandayi, however, denied the allegations and assured Mr Owino that the party’s primaries and next year’s polls will be free and fair.

The Ugunja MP told Mr Owino to prepare to face him in the ODM primaries which he said will be free and fair, and accept whichever results will come out.

Mr Wandayi said that the ODM party is continuing with preparations for the 2022 General Election even as they wait for the Court of Appeal ruling on the Building Bridges Initiative set for August 20.

Ms Aludo died of Covid-19 complications while undergoing treatment at Mater Hospital in Nairobi.

Two Police officers on Friday night shot each other along Thika Road over what is suspected to be a love triangle.

According to a report by police, the incident happened at about 2130hrs on the night of Friday July 2, 2021 near Quiver Lounge opposite Garden city mall.

Police records show that constable Festus Musyoka Kavuthi, a DCI officer attached to Starehe Police Station, and constable Lawrence Muturi of Kasarani Police Station  engaged each other after Muturi bumped into Musyoka in the company of a woman identified as Felista Nzisa.

The Police OB report indicates that Musyoka was the first one to fire at his Kasarani counterpart before the latter shot him back in the neck  and accidentally hit Nzisa in the abdomen.

The woman and Musyoka are said to have been rushed to Nehema Uhai Hospital for first aid services before the latter was later taken to Nairobi Hospital after his condition turned critical.

Muturi is said to have sought medical attention at Radiant Hospital where he was treated and discharged. Kasarani DCI officers have hence confiscated rifles belonging to the two officers pending ballistic analysis and conclusive investigations.
