Amidst the debate on the Competency Based Curriculum, the Teachers Service Commission came up with a new directive that all teachers should have fresh training every five years to refresh their certificates, lest they’re deregistered by the commission.

Photo: Courtesy

The commission’s secretary Nancy Macharia made the announcement that all teachers under TSC payroll should take the Teachers Professional Development program (TPD), which is accredited to be taken in any of these institutions; Kenyatta University, Riara University, Mt. Kenya University and Kenya Institute of Education Management.

Recently, Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi filed a petition challenging CBC program. He told parents and teachers that he had hearkened to their call arguing that the education system in Kenya should not be expensive, inefficient and ineffective.

After this, education CS Prof. Magoha swore to fight with them in court and ensured them he would win. Havi on Friday morning told teachers to suit themselves this time as they are called upon for the compulsory training.

It seems a section of teachers requested him to help them oppose the recent requirement for teachers by TSC. He wrote on his Facebook account,”Teachers, you left Wilson Sossion to be fought to exhaustion by the state. KNUT withdrew all the cases against the state when you replaced Sossion with a Secretary of ‘your preferred choice.’ Please, stop calling me to challenge the directive by TSC that you be trained afresh.”

Former Kenya Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion called it quits after years of squabbles in the union. He faced a lot of resistance and attempts to be ousted out of office by KNUT members and despite putting on ha gard skin and telling them he would not resign, he gave it up on June 2020. Sossion then blamed the government for orchestrating his removal in a bid to stop him from fighting for the rights of teachers and making the union better.

Congratulations! After a lot of hard work, you were admitted at a university in the United Kingdom. But before you can start packing your bags, you have to make sure you have the proper paperwork ready.

The amount of information may be overwhelming at first, but with a little organisation, you’ll go through the entire process in no time. The following article is meant to offer you a complete guide to make your visa application process for the UK as easy and less stressful as possible.

1. Apply to a UK university and get your acceptance letter

If you’re still not sure where you want to study in the UK, you will have to decide before you can start your student visa application process. After being accepted at a university, you’ll get an acceptance letter required for the visa application.

Here are some UK universities we recommend:

The following are some of the most popular academic disciplines in the United Kingdom:

2. Find out if you need a visa to study in the UK

Brexit has created a lot of confusion, especially among international students who want to study or are already studying a degree in the UK. But we’ll do our best to clarify the changes and who needs a visa to study in the United Kingdom:

EU/EEA and Swiss students

  • If you arrive in the UK before 31 December 2020, you don’t need a visa.
  • If you arrive in the UK on or after 1 January 2021, you might need a visa.
  • If you start studying before 31 December 2020 and want to continue studying after 1 January 2021, you will need to apply for a settlement scheme before 30 June 2021.
  • Citizens from Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein might benefit from the same rules, but they should always check what visa regulations apply to them.

Non-EU/EEA students

Depending on the length of their studies, non-EU/EEA students need to apply either for a Short-Term Study Visa or a General Student Visa (also called Tier 4 Student Visa).

To find out if you need a visa in the UK, the easiest way is to use the online tool on the UK Government website.

3. Find out what type of visa you need to study in the UK

These are the 2 types of visas for which you might need to apply to become a UK student:

  • Short-Term Study Visa (available for 6 or 11 months) – for students who plan to study a short language course or take up a short period of research as part of a degree programme.
  • Tier 4 (General) Student Visa – for students who enrol in an academic degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD course). The Tier 4 Student Visa doesn’t have a fixed period of availability; the length of your studies determines the length of this visa.

4. When and where to apply for the student visa in the UK?

There are two options for getting your student visa in the UK. You can apply for a student visa at the UK embassy in your country or you can do it online, on the official UK Government website.

Depending on your nationality, you might need to have your fingerprints and photograph taken at a visa application centre (to get a biometric residence permit) as part of your application.

Tips about my visa application

  • Keep in mind that as 1 January 2021 approaches, the visa application process might change. To view the latest up-to-date information, always visit the official UK Government website.
  • Do not leave your visa application until the last moment. Usually, it takes about 3 weeks to receive the Tier 4 Student Visa. But depending on the place you are applying from, you should start the visa application process 3 months in advance.
  • Make sure you have the certificate of acceptance for studies (CAS) from your university before applying for the student visa.
  • Make sure you get all the information before you start the application process.
  • Make sure the institution you are applying to is licensed.
  • Universities usually have trained visa advisors able to answer your questions about the Tier 4 student visa and guide you through the application process.

5. Conditions you need to meet to receive a Tier 4 visa

  • Be over 16 years old
  • Speak, read, and understand English
  • Have sufficient money to support yourself during studies
  • Have an unconditional offer of study from a licensed university in the UK

Language requirements for studying in the UK

To prove that your knowledge of spoken and written English meet British visa requirements, you will need to pass a secure English language test (SELT). You must meet the CEFR level B2 of language proficiency if you’re studying at a degree level or higher.

Exception: for students coming from certain countries, proof of English proficiency may not be required if they’ve completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree.

6. Documents required for a UK student visa

  • Completed visa application form
  • Passport or valid travel documentation
  • One passport-sized photograph
  • Proof that you can support yourself during your stay in the UK: 1,265 GBP/month if you live in London and 1,015 GBP/month for the rest of the UK
  • Parental consent, if you’re under 18 years old
  • Tuberculosis test results (for citizens of certain countries)
  • Proof of paying the visa application fee: 348 GBP
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: 150 GBP per year of study
  • Self-assessment form Appendix 8 with attached documents. (not required if you apply online)
  • Other requirements that may vary depending on your country of origin

Any documents that have to be submitted in support of the Appendix 8 form, which are not in English or Welsh, must be accompanied by an official full translation that can be independently verified by the UK Border Agency.

Have you considered applying to an international university in the United Kingdom, one of the most popular academic study destinations in the world?

If the answer is yes, we have created an easy-to-use and extensive guide with key information that will help you successfully get through the application process for your dream university in the UK.

Prepare to apply

1. Make sure you choose the right degree. UK Bachelors and Masters are very specialised, answering diverse student interests.

  • International students outside the EU (European Union) and EEA (European Economic Area) pay full tuition at UK universities. Also, non-EU/EEA students will not be eligible for loans and grants.
  • Students from the EU/EEA used to pay the same fees as British nationals. But 2020 (and the first half of 2021) is the last year when they will have this benefit as well as the option to apply for student loans. Learn more about tuition fees in the UK after Brexit.

3. Check your scholarship eligibility. Find scholarships for studying in the UK. You can also check out the Studyportals Scholarship to get some help on financing your studies abroad.

4. Check the university entry requirements, especially discover if you need to take any language test, such as IELTS or TOEFL.

5. Consider hiring an experienced adviser to guide you through the application process.

Find and compare information about Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the UK.

How to apply to a university in the UK

Undergraduate students

All applications for Bachelor’s degrees in the UK are submitted using the UCAS application website (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). The majority of universities will only accept your application through the UCAS system.

Follow these easy steps to apply through UCAS:

  • Register and create your application on the UCAS website
  • Apply for up to five programmes, at the same or different universities in the UK
  • Complete personal information
  • Include previous educational qualifications
  • Add financial information
  • Write a personal statement
  • Some universities may require additional tests such as the UCAT or BMAT for Medicine, or the LNAT for Law degrees

You can save your application and return to it as many times as you like before submitting the final version.

Postgraduate students

1. Future Master’s and PhD students can apply directly to their chosen university. Most universities allow you to send your application throughout the year, but some degree courses have specific deadlines. It’s best to contact your chosen university to find out specific details about their graduate application process.

2. Apply via the UKPASS system. You can fill in all your details online and scan and upload any required documents such as a copy of your passport and previous Bachelor’s degree certificates.

3. For PhD programmes, applicants are usually expected to also choose a suitable supervisor from the university.

Language requirements for the UK university application

At UK universities, you have a plethora of degrees taught in English you can choose from. For this reason, unless you come from an English-speaking country, you will have to deliver proof of advanced English language proficiency. Accepted language tests are:

Required university application documents

Along with your personal information, you will need to submit photocopied evidence confirming your identity and academic history. These may include:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport, national identification card
  • Reference letters, if required
  • Evidence of English competency
  • Copies of degree/diploma certificates
  • Academic transcripts
  • Graduate applicants may also be required to submit a research proposal

Most or all of the document copies will have to be certified by a professional authority, which will confirm their authenticity. If a document/statement is not in English, an official notarised translation may be required.

In some cases, universities may ask for additional documents after you have submitted your application. To avoid delays or missed deadlines, send your evidence with plenty of time in advance.

University application deadlines in the UK

Here are some of the most important deadlines to consider when applying for a university in the UK:

  • mid-October: deadline for all Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine courses
  • mid-January: UCAS deadline for EU/EEA students. High ranking universities will not accept Bachelor’s applications after the UCAS application deadlines
  • end of June: deadline for international students from a non-EU/EEA country
  • Many universities have different deadlines for international students (especially for graduate applicants). Check specific university deadlines on the university websites
  • August: The UCAS Clearing process. Universities open up all their remaining places for late university applicants who still want to start their degree studies in the current academic year

Final steps after receiving your university acceptance letter

Studying in the United Kingdom means a few extra steps after the application process:

  • Settle your health insurance. If you come from an EU/EEA country, you can use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If health insurance is not valid, you will have to pay 80–160 EUR per month to cover it.
  • Apply for the UK student visa if you are coming from outside the EU/EEA.
  • You might need to register at a police station within seven days after your arrival in the UK (this is only required if your visa sticker in your passport states ‘Police registration’).
  • Some UK universities require you to pre-enrol online on the university website before arriving in the UK.

If you’re reading this, you are most likely considering carrying out your higher studies in a top US university. As per our experience, what every successful Study Abroad venture has in common is this – it is based on a well-planned and structured timeline. While each student’s timeline will differ based on a number of individual factors, we’ve put together a timeline for you to get an idea of what yours could – and should – look like.

Universities in the USA follow a dual semester system. While in India, students can only enter university in the first semester, in the USA, students have the ability to commence their studies in whichever semester suits them, subject to various factors including course availability.

The Hurray Overseas Education Consultant team has put together some information on the intakes so that you can decide on your choice of university.

Intakes

  1. Fall Semester: commences in late August-early September
  2. Spring Semester: commences in January

The exact date of intake will differ as per the university, and sometimes as per the programme, particularly in the case of graduate programmes. As and when you zero in on a particular university and/or programme, remember to keep note of the specific intake dates in order to plan accordingly.

The following timeline is based on the assumption that you would be opting for the Fall semester intake in 2021, which is often preferred by Indian applicants.

Timeline

Step 1: Research and selection – June-July 2020

  • This is the step that most of you reading this post, are probably on – researching which universities and programmes are best suited to what you want to study in USA You may have started earlier or later – but by the end of July you should preferably have chosen the universities and programmes to which you wish to apply.

Step 2: Clearing standardised tests – July-October 2020

  • You are probably aware that for admission to a US University, you would be required to provide proof of sufficient proficiency in the language. Universities in the USA accept a number of English proficiency tests as proof of the same, preferably IELTS or TOEFL.
  • Other important entrance exams that certain programmes demand include GRE, GMAT and so on.
  • Thus, before you can apply to a university, preparing for and clearing these tests is essential – this three to four month period (though you may certainly begin earlier), is meant for just that.
  • Plan to take the test, leaving yourself with enough time to get your certificate, in time to process your application.

At Hurray we offer specialised training courses especially for IELTS – enrol with us, and we will ensure that you are prepped and ready to take the test on time, and clear it with the required score – or higher!

Step 3: Applying to university – November 2020-January 2021

Application deadlines

For Fall semester (late August-September) – the deadline is usually between January-March of the same year.

  • Each university will have differing application deadlines. Additionally, particularly in the case of graduate programmes, individual programmes may have differing deadlines.
  • It is essential to keep track of the exact deadlines for your preferred programmes.
  • Several of the universities are ranked among the best in the world – thus entry becomes quite competitive. Certain programmes may have limited seats and will close applications once they are filled, with later applications being considered for the following intake.
  • Furthermore, international students require time to apply for and receive their visas, book flight tickets and relocate internationally.
  • For these reasons, we recommend completing and submitting your application well in advance of the recommended or final deadlines.
  • Assuming you are applying for the Fall semester, you should be prepped and ready to submit your application, with all the necessary supporting documents – including your Statement of Purpose, college essays, Letters or Recommendation and so on, as applicable to your programme, by late December 2020 or early January 2021.
  • If you have identified a scholarship that you wish to apply for, it will have its own deadline – in this case you will have to process your admission accordingly.

Step 4: Notification of acceptance and preparing to relocate – April-July 2021

  • Your letter of acceptance usually arrives in early-to-mid April. You then have until May 1, in most cases, to confirm with the university that you will be attending.
  • Once you confirm enrolment and pay your fees, the next important step is your Visa application
  • The university will provide you with the official documentation required to process your visa.
  • The visa can be issued up to 120 days (approximately 4 months) prior to the start date of your programme. To ensure that you receive your visa on time, we recommend you file your application as early as possible.
  • The visa process will require that you schedule an interview at the nearest US Embassy/Consulate – the approximate wait time for the interview is usually about a month, though it could be longer. Applicants for a student visa are usually given priority.
  • Following the interview and submission of all documents, you should receive your visa within a few weeks.
  • You will be allowed to enter the country 30 days prior to the start date of your programme. Depending on how much time you would require to find accommodation and settle down in your new home-city, you can book your flight tickets accordingly.

Step 5: Commence study! – August-September 2021

  • If you follow the steps as specified till here, you will be settled and ready before it is time to enter university.
  • As per the intake date of your programme, you will have an Orientation Week, following which, your programme will officially begin.

Based on your specific dates, your timeline may have variations – but you can nonetheless use the above structure, keeping in mind the number of weeks each step requires, in addition to the key dates for your preferred programme, and plan accordingly.

But why do it all by yourself? Our Overseas Counselling team here at Hurray has the expertise required to help you plan your timeline, as well as to carry out each step to success.
