Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued an update on the fatal shooting of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Murkomen, in a statement issued via his official social media accounts on Thursday, May 1, 2025, said that he had spoken to the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who has assured him that investigations have advanced.

Kanja on Wednesday evening visited Nairobi Hospital in the company of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohamed Amin, where Ong’ondo Were’s body was lying.

The body has since been moved to Lee Funeral Home.

In his latest update, Murkomen has urged the investigative agencies to move with speed and thoroughness and bring to book those involved in the fatal shooting of Ong’ondo Were.

“Following the shooting to death of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were last evening, the Inspector General of Police has assured me that investigations have advanced. I urge the investigative agencies to move with speed and thoroughness and bring those involved to book. I once again send my heartfelt condolences to the family of Hon Were, the people of Kasipul and the nation at large for this tragic loss,” Murkomen said.

Ong’ondo Were met his death on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, when he was ambushed by two assailants on a motorcycle, who shot at him six times at around 7:30 pm, along Ngong Road near the City Mortuary.

His driver and bodyguard were not hurt during the incident. They rushed the lawmaker to the nearby Nairobi Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the shooting was executed by a highly trained assailant who might be having intelligence or millitary background.

According to the police, the assailant only aimed at the MP, leaving other car occupants and unharmed, with documents in the car remaining untampered with.

Videos have now emerged online showing that Ong’ondo Were feared for his life, as he had earlier exposed a plot to assasinate him.

West Kasipul MCA Vickins Bondo

West Kasipul MCA Vickins Bondo, who is the youngest elected MCA in Homa Bay County, has been shot by unknown people in Nairobi.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, in a statement shared via his official X account on Sunday, April 27, 2025, said that Bondo was shot on Saturday night.

However, Alai did not reveal the current state of the MCA but pointed out that police are working to trace his whereabouts.

“Homa Bay County MCA Vickins Bondo was shot in Nairobi last night. Police are trying to trace where he is,” Alai stated.

A screenshot of Alai’s statement.

Daily Trends has established that Bondo sustained a head injury. He was rushed to hospital where he was stitched and discharged.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Bondo the winner of the West Kasipul ward seat in 2022 after garnering 4,041 votes against his closest challenger, Peter Ongili, who got 3,975 votes.

Bondo won on an independent ticket, while Ongili contested on an ODM ticket.

Ongili went to Oyugis court and challenged Bondo’s election before the latter election was nullified.

Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Omwansa issued a ruling on January 31, 2023, that saw Bondo’s election annulled.

Omwansa ordered the electoral agency to conduct a fresh election.

During a hearing at Oyugis law court, it was established that some counterfoils used in the election did not match the valid ballot papers.

The MCA and IEBC later moved to the High Court in Homa Bay to appeal the decision by the lower court where Justice Waweru Kiarie reversed the ruling and reinstated him as the duly elected MCA.

Two police officers were arrested for confiscating and hiding two kilos of bhang at a police station in Nyeri.

Police authorities said there were also claims of bribery that led to the April 24 arrest.

The arrest was made after a woman claimed the two cops had confiscated the drugs and demanded a bribe for her release on April 15.

She told police she had to part with Sh100,000 for her freedom. But the officers did not release her narcotics.

They also did not book the case at the local police station as required to indicate they had recovered the two kilos of narcotics, police said.

Further, they did not book for safekeeping the seized bhang at the station.

The motive was not immediately established, officials said.

Out of anger and frustration, the woman informed a local politician of the incident.

The politician organised a protest to denounce the incident.

Police in the area demanded to establish the reasons for the planned protests, and when they were informed, they staged a search on the houses of the two officers who had been adversely mentioned.

The commanders from Tetu staged the search at Muthinga police post officers’ houses, whom the demonstrators had mentioned.

The woman claimed a female and male officer went to her house and picked up a bag that had the drugs.

They also detained her briefly before a bribe of Sh100,000 was successfully demanded for her release.

Police said a bag with a substance believed to be bhang, approximately two kilos, was found in the police woman’s house.

The second male officer was arrested after it emerged he was the one who picked up the bribe for the suspect’s release.

No report was recorded in the Occurrence book, and the station commander was also not informed, officials said, terming the development illegal.

Police termed the incident isolated, adding that a probe is ongoing to get more information. Cases where police are involved in crime have been on the rise. Police authorities say they have mechanisms for dealing with such cases.

Security agencies have in the past months mounted operations targeting drug traffickers and consumers.

Dozens of kilos of the drugs were seized in the operations. Some of the drugs are imported from neighbouring countries.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has stepped in and taken over the investigations into the cause of death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve after leaders intensified calls to have it probed.

Speaking to the press outside the Lee Funeral Home where the body of the late MCA is being preserved, the family lawyer Danstan Omari revealed the family together with the political class, the government pathologist and the Homicide Unit of the DCI Nairobi area held a meeting and agreed on a date that the cause of the death will be revealed.

The autopsy that is set to reveal the real cause of MCA Munuve’s death will be conducted tomorrow, Friday, April 25, 2025, at 9:00 am. The cause of the death will then be announced to the public.

“After a meeting between the family, the Homicide Unit of the DCI and the late MCA’s political family, we agreed to have the autopsy postponed from today ( Thursday) and be done tomorrow,” Omari said.

Leaders call for probe

Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka had called for a quick investigation into the cause of  Munuve’s death.

Kalonzo, while mourning Munuve in a statement shared via his official X account on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, said that quick action should be taken to establish the cause of his sudden death.

Kalonzo went ahead to state that Munuve was a tireless advocate of the rights of people, a dedicated servant of the people of Kariobangi and indeed the entire county of Nairobi, and an active member of his team.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the sudden passing of Mheshimiwa Joel Munuve, MCA Kariobangi North ward. Mheshimiwa Munuve was a tireless advocate of the rights of people, a dedicated servant of the people of Kariobangi and indeed the entire county of Nairobi, and an active member of Team SKM. My thoughts and prayers are with Hon. Munuve’s family, friends and constituents at this most difficult time. As we mourn Hon. Munuve, we urge quick action on establishing the cause of his sudden death,” Kalonzo stated.

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has also called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve’s death.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Wamalwa expressed deep sorrow following the sudden death of Munuve. He described him as a friend and a committed leader.

“Saddened to learn of the sudden death of my friend Joel Munuve, MCA Kariobangi North Ward, Nairobi City County, yesterday under unclear circumstances! As we condole with his family, we call for thorough investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding his death,” Wamalwa wrote.

Detectives are camping at a church in Rongo, Migori County, after two congregants died while 57 were rescued from the compound.

Police said the 57 people who were rescued refused to be treated at a local hospital where they had been taken for attention.

They are being detained at a local police station while weak as police consult on the way forward.

Police were on Monday, April 21 2025, informed there was a body lying at the Church in Kanyadiedo sub-location, East Kamagambo location, before rushing there.

The team found the body lying on the floor of a prayer room within the church compound.

According to police, the body was fully covered in a white robe and wrapped in a grey sheet at that time.

Police said the body had some injuries on the face, and foam was oozing from the mouth.

Earlier in the day, another body was recovered from the same place, police said.

The bodies were moved to the local morgue pending autopsy and other procedures.

The police conducted a search in the church and managed to rescue 57 people residing there.

Police said some of them were looking weak, and the group was then escorted to Rongo Sub-County hospital for medical attention, but all of them refused to be examined by medical officers.

They began to make noises and singing religious songs.

When they persisted, the medical officers advised that the group be removed from the hospital since they were disturbing the other patients at the facility.

Police said they were taken to the station to await further directives.

This is the second such incident to happen in the area amid a probe into claims of occultism.

A police officer believed to have been radicalised was buried at a church compound in Kamagambo, Migori county, prompting police investigations.

Police have blamed occultism for the incident and declared the teachings at the church in Opapo village in Kamagambo are misleading.

The officer died on March 27, 2025, following a sickness, before his body was interred at the church the following day.

Obura was a police officer based at the General Service Unit headquarters in Nairobi.

His wife told police he fell sick as they were at home and decided to take him to the church in Opapo village in Kamagambo for prayers.

He, however, died on the way, and they arrived at the church in the night on March 27 at about 8 pm.

The following day, the woman obtained a burial permit from a local assistant chief.

The chief did not know where the body was to be interred, he said.

Armed with the permit, the woman and a few church members buried the body within the compound.

Some family members told police they had complained about the church in the past, arguing their son had been radicalised by the teachings.

The father of Obura had reported the issue to the police, who visited the church at one time.

It is not clear what action was taken then.

Police said they are investigating the incidents.

There was no immediate comment from the church leadership over the incident.

Cases of occultism have been on the rise.

King’ara was arraigned on April 16, 2025, where detectives were granted custodial orders to complete investigations.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested a young man linked to the harrowing murders of two young women in Thika, Kiambu County.

DCI, in a statement issued via social media on Thursday, April 17, 2025, said Samuel King’ara Kimani had been apprehended by detectives from the homicide department.

According to the police, the first case unfolded on March 17, 2025, when 22-year-old Rosemary Njeri Ndekei vanished minutes after heading to Thika town to shop for clothes. Her disappearance sparked concern, leading to a missing person report being filed at Thika Police Station by her boyfriend and relatives.

On March 18, 2025, members of the public discovered the lifeless body of a young woman in a coffee plantation in the Karibaribi area. Without identification documents, the decomposing body was transported to General Kago Mortuary for identification and autopsy.

On March 19, 2025, the body was identified as that of Rosemary by her family, confirming their worst fears. Upon autopsy, the government pathologist confirmed the cause of death to be manual strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head, clear signs of a brutal homicide.

The second incident occurred on March 31, 2025, when 20-year-old Hellen Wambui Ndung’u, a student at Gituamba Vocational Training College, disappeared after being sent by her mother to buy foodstuffs at Ngorongo Trading Centre, still in Kiambu.

And just like in the case of Rosemary, the following day her body was discovered in a bush, partially covered with soil. The body had no visible injuries, and neighbours identified her as the missing girl.

Utilising forensic leads and the Exchange Principle, the team trailed and arrested the prime suspect, Samuel King’ara Kimani, at the Dry area of Ngomongo on April 14, 2025.

The investigation uncovered a chilling pattern: in both cases, the suspect accosted the victims at isolated pathways, thereafter dragging them into the depths of sprawling coffee plantations, where he sexually assaulted them before ruthlessly taking their lives and holing up without a trace.

King’ara was arraigned on April 16, 2025, where detectives were granted custodial orders to complete investigations.

Kimani Wamatangi arrested

Anti-president William Ruto chants erupted in Kiambu on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, after Governor Kimani Wamatangi was arrested following a police raid on his home.

Residents broke into “Ruto must go” chants as Governor Wamatangi was being driven away from his home in the escort of a convoy of police vehicles.

During the arrest, Wamatangi was seen waving to the locals from the backseat of an SUV as the detectives escorted him to their offices for interrogation.

The residents, while chanting anti-Ruto songs, alleged that the president was aware of the scheme behind Wamatangi’s frustrations.

However, the presence of heavily armed police officers deterred their attempts to block the convoy transporting Wamatangi and the other county officials.

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Wamatangi over alleged corruption following early morning raids at his residence and county offices.

Nine senior county officials were also arrested in the crackdown linked to suspected embezzlement of public funds and conflict of interest in procurement deals.

EACC detectives said they seized documents and electronic devices crucial to the probe.

The operation follows months of pressure from Kiambu leaders for investigations into the governor, who succeeded Ferdinand Waititu—now in prison for a Ksh588M graft case.

In February, Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa urged the EACC to probe the county’s shift from an automated to a manual payment system, alleging it enabled ghost workers and the theft of Ksh390 million.

A Super Metro bus overturned along Thika Road on Saturday, March 29, 2025, after an accident.

A matatu belonging to Super Metro Limited on Saturday, March 29, 2025, was involved in a road accident in the Jomoko area along the Thika Superhighway.

According to reports, the Super Metro matatu was involved in the accident with a private vehicle that landed in a ditch as a result of the impact.

Images doing rounds on social media show the bus overturned, but there are no casualties that have been reported.

Some of the images from the scene of accident involving a Super Metro bus.

Further reports indicate that the driver of the Super Metro bus was over speeding and overlapping while driving carelessly at the time the accident happened.

Some of the images from the scene of accident involving a Super Metro bus.

Super Metro woes

This comes days after Super Metro bowed down to NTSA’s demands and presented over 200 buses to NTSA’s inspection offices at Likoni Road in Nairobi, days after the authority suspended the popular matatu sacco’s operation license.

The troubles plaguing the company stemmed from an incident involving some of their crew members where a conductor threw out a passenger from a fast-moving Super Metro bus. The passenger died on the spot, and the crew fled the scene.

This led to fury and uproar from the public, who faulted the company for their lack of professionalism over the matter, prompting authorities to step in and take action.

A United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politician is fighting for his life in hospital after being accosted by unknown assailants who shot him four times.

Nicholas Lorot, an Isiolo Member of County Assembly for Burat Ward who was elected on the ruling UDA ticket, was ambushed on the night of Wednesday, March 26, 2025, shortly after his meeting with a senior county official within Isiolo town.

The MCA was rushed to St. Theresa Mission Hospital in Kiirua, Meru County, for medical attention, where he is still hospitalized for gunshot wounds.

He is known to be frequently at odds with Governor Abdi Guyo’s administration on key governance and resource allocation matters.

While the motive for his attack remains unclear, a section of Kenyans has linked it to his advocacy work, as he is actively involved in advocating for community land rights, which has often seen him engage in heated disputes with both county officials and private developers.

The incident saw the MCA lose his thumb while attempting to deflect the gunshot with his right hand and sustained two additional gunshot wounds in the same arm.

The Isiolo County Assembly has since confirmed the incident and condemned those behind the attack, revealing that they were working closely with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The County Assembly of Isiolo vehemently condemns the brazen shooting of Hon. Nicholas Lorot, Member of the County Assembly for Burat Ward. Former Nyandarua County Governor, Daniel Waithaka Mwangi, has been sentenced to two years in prison or a fine of Ksh. 1 million after being found guilty of procurement irregularities.

The verdict was delivered at the Nyahururu Anti-Corruption Courts, where Waithaka was sentenced alongside Grace Wanjiru Gitonga, the former County Executive Committee Member for Water, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources.

Gitonga also received a sentence of two years or a Ksh. 1 million fine.

Waithaka was sentenced to two years in prison or a Ksh. 500,000 fine for wilfully failing to comply with procurement laws, and another two years or Ksh. 500,000 fine for abuse of office.

Chief Magistrate Hezekiah Keago ruled that the sentences would run concurrently if Waithaka fails to pay the imposed fine.

Gitonga, for her part, was sentenced to two years or a Ksh. 500,000 fine for engaging in a project without prior planning.

She was also given another two-year sentence or a Ksh. 500,000 fine for wilfully failing to comply with procurement laws.

Like Waithaka, Gitonga’s sentences will run concurrently if the fine is not paid.

The court heard that on April 30, 2014, both defendants, in their capacity as public officers responsible for managing public property, violated the Public Procurement and Disposal Act of 2006.
They unlawfully procured the services of M/s TAHAL Consulting Engineers Limited without a procurement plan for the 2013/2014 financial year, contrary to Section 26(3)(a) of the Act.

Additionally, the court found that on or about April 4, 2014, Waithaka improperly used his office to confer a benefit on M/s TAHAL Consulting Engineers Limited.

He awarded the company a contract for the development of the County Water Master Plan and the design review of the Ol Kalou Town Sewerage System without following the required procurement procedures.

Waithaka is the third governor in the past two years to be convicted on graft charges, joining former Samburu County Governor Moses Lenolkulaal and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.

Prosecution team in this case was led by Mercy Gateru, Maryanne Mwangi, Alex Akula, and Wesley Nyamache.

KRA
  • The KRA officers demanded a Ksh120,000 bribe as a condition for the release of goods they had confiscated from the traveler.
  • The traveler refused to pay the bribe and instead reported the matter to EACC.
  • They are being detained at the Industrial Area police station, awaiting to be arraigned in court on Monday.

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested two Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers for demanding a bribe from a traveler.

EACC, in a statement issued on Saturday, February 22, 2025, said that the officers identified as Mutava Lawrence and Timothy Momanyi were arrested on Friday evening at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

According to EACC, the two officers demanded a Ksh120,000 bribe as a condition for the release of goods they had confiscated from the traveler.

“As part of the ongoing crackdown on bribery at service delivery points, the EACC arrested Mutava Lawrence and Timothy Momanyi, employees of the Kenya Revenue Authority deployed as customs officers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, for allegedly demanding a KES 120,000 bribe as a condition for the release of goods they had confiscated from a traveler,” EACC said.

The traveler refused to pay the bribe and instead reported the matter to EACC, after which the anti-graft agency swung into action and arrested the suspects as they received the bribe they had demanded.

A search was conducted on them, and a total of Ksh 297,000 was recovered, which is suspected to be proceeds of corruption.

They are being detained at the Industrial Area police station, awaiting to be arraigned in court on Monday.

“The Commission conducted an operation and arrested the suspects on Friday evening while receiving the bribe. After the arrest, a search was conducted on the suspects’ cars where KES297,000 suspected to be proceeds of corruption and a firearm were recovered. The suspects are held at Industrial Area Police Station awaiting further processing,” the EACC said.
