Bungoma County health workers have threatened to down their tools should the Wycliffe Wangamati-led government fail to address their concerns.

They have called out the county government for alleged negligence saying that it has failed to keep the promises that they made to them during the past industrial action.

The county government had promised to address the issues that the nurses were facing but since then nothing has happened.

Speaking to the press in Bungoma town on Tuesday, the secretary general of Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Bungoma branch George Barasa said that the county government during the past industrial action promised to look into the issues that the nurses were facing including the payment of enhanced risk allowance for all the nurses in the county, promoting the redesignation of  nurses and confirmation of those who have been employed on permanent terms of service but it is yet to be done.

“As the hospitals across the county continue to suffer with a shortage of nurses, the county government is just quiet yet they even conducted an interview in November last year and the county public service board is yet to produce the results of that particular exercise.

“There are even some of our staffs who have exited service and there is no replacement hence making the services in health facilities very bad,” he said

Barasa went ahead to say that the county government has been having meetings with them but nothing is being generated from those meetings since their issues have never been addressed.

“We are asking them as the union in this county, we want them to implement this issues that we have agreed with them fully, and we are saying the word is fully because the count time for 14 days that we are issuing this strike starts today, once this notice elapses, members will pull out of the service and we won’t be having services in public facilities,” he said

Just days after businessman Suleiman Shahbal bowed out of the Mombasa gubernatorial race, details of how President Uhuru’s hand played a role in the decision have emerged.

Shahbal last week shocked many when he announced that he had dropped his governor bid in support of Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.

While making the announcement, he said that he had reached the decision after thoughtful consideration of the needs and aspirations of the people of Mombasa, long deliberations with ODM party leader Raila Odinga and advice from the chair of Azimio la Umoja Coalition, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Details have, however, emerged that Shahbal had rejected calls to step down in favor of Abdulswamad.

This is even after Raila made several attempts to convince him, including chairing a meeting with him in Nairobi.

According to sources that spoke to one of the leading local dailies, Raila made a phone call to President Kenyatta to seek his intervention.

It is President Kenyatta together with Raila who then reportedly told Shahbal that his hardline stance had created divisions among ODM supporters.

They urged him to step down given that three opinion polls had shown Nassir was ahead.

Shahbal found himself between the sitting president and the possibly incoming president, leaving him with no option.

Meanwhile, Shahbal has accepted an offer to join Raila’s Presidential campaign team.

The UDA nomination exercise in Bungoma County on Thursday April 14, 2022 turned ugly when a section of aspirants and their supporters engaged in a fist fight.

The UDA nomination process in Kimaeti ward, Bumula sub county in Bungoma County was forced to come to an end after some of the aspirants engaged in violence leading to two being hospitalized.

While speaking to the press at Kimaeti health center where the two-aspirants seeking the Member of the county assembly seats (MCA)were hospitalized, Bumula MP Mwambu Mwabonga condemned the act.

The lawmaker said that UDA as a party is an advocate, saying that it was so unfortunate for such behaviors to be experienced.

Mabonga went ahead to say that the aspirants that were involved in causing chaos will be disqualified and those who practice peace during the exercise can be considered as direct nominees.

The exercise in that ward which was being conducted at Kimaeti primary school was cancelled and postponed to further dates that will be communicated later according to the nomination’s supervisor MP Mwambu Mabonga.

The area MP went ahead to ask the youths to stop being manipulated by politicians to cause havoc and destruction saying that it will only result in them being jailed and the politicians will not be there to support them.

“Let me warn those young people that are being used by politicians to beat others, stop that behavior because the we shall find you and it will not be easy for you,” he said.

He then called out the police to investigate those who were involved in the chaos to be arrested immediately and the aspirants being disqualified from the party.

“I warned everyone yesterday, politics is not about beating or harming each other, sell your manifestos peacefully to the voters and allow them to decide on their own but it seems my words didn’t land in the ears and so, I will let the police take charge and find each and everyone who was involved in what happened today. We as a party we cannot condone that,” said the angry Mwambu.

Mwambu, during a public engagement with the residents of Siboti ward in Bumula constituency said Kenyans are suffering but it doesn’t seem to ring a bell to the president to come out and address the nation over the same and give a way forward over the ailing state of the economy.

“The president has kept quiet over the recent reading of the budget yet it has raised a mixed reaction among Kenyans, he needs to come out and say something on it because we can’t continue operating like this as a country,” he said.

He went ahead to say that President Kenyatta and his alleged project, the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya flag bearer Raila Odinga do not relate to the problems of the common Wananchi.

Mwambu went ahead to drum up support for his UDA party boss William Ruto saying that he is the real hustler and can relate to each and every problem.

The quick-witted law maker went ahead to call out the Bungoma county boss Wycliffe Wangamati over his empty promises after he failed to deliver the promise of drilling water in the wards which has resulted in water shortages in Bungoma county.

Mabonga further asked the residents to vote for the leaders who can deliver and not those who come with lies and not receipts.

He, however, asked his opponent Jack Wamboka to stop causing chaos while seeking support from the residents saying that politics should not always involve chaos and insults, and should instead let the residents decide saying that for him he knows that he will beat him hands down.

The Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation has urged the Eastern region political leaders to help end teenage pregnancies.

While targeting those seeking elective seats in the region as the country heads to the August general elections, the organization said the rising cases of teenage pregnancies has become a disaster that is robbing off the Eastern region future leaders.

The orgnaisation’s National Chairperson, Rahab Muiu called on parents to reflect back on where they let the ball fall in protecting young girls from falling victims to under-age pregnancies.

“This is beyond sad; it’s very unfortunate that the generations we hope to be our leaders in the years to come are being wiped out by this monster. As leaders and especially as women we need to take up this issue and fight for our girls. As we fight for those political seats let’s take up this as our agenda,” said Muiu during the Eastern region celebrations to mark 70 –years of MYWO transforming the place of women in the country through socio-economic programmes.

At the height of the pandemic, schools shut-down to control spread of COVID-19, with the prolonged closure of learning institutions, it came with a lot of challenges among them being a spike in teenage pregnancies.

According to a research done by Kenya Health Information System in 2020, 152,000 Kenyan teenage girls became pregnant which translated to 40%.  The survey also indicated that 3,964 girls under the age of 19 were pregnant in Machakos County alone.

MYWO has linked the teenage pregnancy menace in the region to several issues among them poverty, lack of parental guidance, forced marriages and sexual violence.

“There is an urgent need to address poverty as one of the root causes of teenage pregnancy. Men and boys should be engaged as advocates against teenage pregnancy too,” said Muiu.

Underage pregnancies she said is now out of control across the country with the National Council for Population Development (NCPD) survey released November 2021 shows cases of teenage pregnancies among girls aged 15-19 in 2020 and 2021 (Jan- Oct) were also high in Bungoma, Meru, Kakamega, Narok and Nairobi counties.

The event bringing women leaders from eight counties that make up the Eastern region-Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, Isiolo and Marsabit also acknowledged key roles played in empowerment fellow weomen.

They include CS Prof Margaret Kobia who have stood with MYWO in a huge way, current Chief Justice, Martha Koome –Kenya’s first female Chief Justice,  Deputy chief Justice Philomena Mwilu among other leaders who have fought for affirmative action, improved access to water and social health initiatives.

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has proposed new rules that will see the involvement of industry players in the examination and classification of content meant to air on their respective platforms.

According to the Co-Regulation Framework for broadcast, Video on Demand (VOD) and Over the Top (OTT) content, KFCB proposes to allow broadcasters, and online streaming service providers to classify 70 percent of audiovisual content on their platforms using the local film classification guidelines.

Under the proposed arrangement, KFCB will only classify 30 percent of the content meant for broadcast on traditional broadcasting and new media platforms. To ensure compliance, the local film and broadcast content regulator shall undertake regular audits on 70% of the self-classified content.

Broadcasters, VOD and Online streaming service platforms will be allowed to self-classify a predetermined proportion of audiovisual content intended to air on their respective platforms only after their staff undergo training on the KFCBs Film Classification Guidelines.

According to the proposed Framework, content broadcasters, VOD and OTT platform operators will be allowed to affix KFCB’s age-appropriate symbols on self-classified content.

Currently, the law requires KFCB to examine and classify audiovisual content meant for broadcast, distribution, and exhibition in the country. However, digitization and increase in the number of players in the broadcast sector has witnessed a proliferation of unclassified audio-visual content on broadcast, VOD, OTT and online streaming platforms.

The migration from analogue to digital TV transmission and the rapid increase and penetration of the internet has also resulted in an increase in content production and content distribution platforms, making it necessary for the regulator to rethink its regulatory processes and frameworks to cope up with market dynamics.

With the existing staffing levels, the film and broadcast content regulator, KFCB, cannot cope with the legal requirement to examine and classify all audiovisual content meant for broadcast, distribution and exhibition in the country.

Implementation of the proposed Framework is expected to lead to enhanced industry compliance with the Films and Stage Plays Act as well as ease the process of examination and classification for broadcasters, in light of the rapidly evolving market and technological dynamics.

The framework is also meant to facilitate an enabling regulatory environment for the broadcast sector which has come under intense competition from digital platforms, including VOD and online streaming services.

KFCB has published the framework on its website for public and stakeholder comments and input. The consultation closes next month on April 4.

The consultation document can be accessed on https://kfcb.go.ke/policies

Bumula member of parliament Mwambu Mabonga has asked Ministry of Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugine Wamalwa to stop misleading the Luhya community.

According to Mwambu, Wamalwa puts his interest first more than the people of Bungoma and so he should let the people choose the leader of their choice.

While addressing the residents at Lwanja in Bumula constituency, Mwambu said that if at all Eugine had the interest of the people of Bungoma at heart then he would have fought hard to even have the fertilizer’s prices lowered.

This comes after the DAP-K party held a similar meeting in the same constituency recently drumming up support for Azimio La Umoja coalition whose presidential candidate is ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Mabonga lashed out at the Azimio allies saying that instead of dedicating themselves in improving the living standards of their own people, they are busy moving around and using the government resources to form many political parties to satisfy their own interests.

“Azimio team was here last week and instead of campaigning and telling the people what they have in store for them, they are busy insulting me. That shows how confused they are, and they should get their priorities right,” he said.

Mabonga went ahead to lament on how the government is blackmailing the Kenya Kwanza alliance supporters forcing them to pull their weight behind Azimio.

This comes after Sirisia MP John Waluke ditching UDA for the Jubilee party which is allied to Azimio.

The first term MP went further to campaign for Ruto and the entire UDA team saying that once they take over the government, they will budget 100 million shillings to the struggling residents so they can relate to the problems that happen.

His sentiments were echoed by women rep aspirant Nancy Kibaba who recently ditched AZIMIO for UDA saying that it is a movement with no agenda.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has apologised over his ‘madoadoa’ statement that he made ni Wajir County on Wednesday.

Speaking on Friday during his tour of Kisumu County, Raila clarified his statement that has caused mixed reactions from Kenyans, claiming that he meant voters shouldn’t elect non-Azimio La Umoja leaders.

The former Prime Minister said no Kenyan should be discriminated based on ethnicity.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) had earlier today summoned Raila over the remarks that were deemed to have fuelled up ethnic tensions ahead of the August polls.

Odinga made the utterances on March 9, 2022 when he took his Azimio la Umoja campaigns to Wajir County as he continues to drum up support for his presidential bid.

“In his remarks, he mentioned the term ‘Madoadoa’ which is considered a hate speech term in Kenya,” NCIC’s Chairman Samuel Kobia said in a statement.

Kobia added that the commission, under his watch, will continue to advocate for good relations, harmony and peaceful co-existence of persons of different ethnic and racial communities while discouraging ethnic discrimination in the August General elections.

In a reaction to NCIC summon, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen raised questions in the manner in which the ODM leader’s case is being handled.

Murkomen now wants the DCI to immediately arrest Raila and put him in custody.

Murkomen in a tweet appeared to suggest that Raila should be treated the same way as Meru Senator Mithika Linturi who was arrested and arraigned for his ‘madoadoa’ remark he made in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu.

At the same time, he poked holes in the NCIC letter and questioned when he will present himself for the summon.

Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has dropped her quest to become the next Nairobi County Governor in the upcoming August general elections.

Instead, the former Starehe MP has opted for the Nairobi Senate seat.

She will now have to square it out with Karen Nyamu in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party primaries.

A leaked UDA party receipt that has gone viral shows that the Jesus Is Alive Ministries bishop had paid a total sum of Kshs. 125,000 as a nomination fee for Nairobi County senator.

Image

Early February, the Nairobi gubermnatorial hopeful Senator Johnson Sakaja and Margaret Wanjiru brought a ‘Kenya Kwanza’ whistle-stop rally at the City Park to a halt after Sakaja’s supporters reportedly booed the woman of the cloth.

Bishop Wanjiru accused Sakaja of inciting his followers against her.

Sakaja did not address the allegations, but appealed to the crowd to allow all the candidates an opportunity to sell their agenda.

Wanjiru’s withdrawal from the gubernatorial race might have been influenced by coming together of the ANC, Ford Kenya and UDA parties to form Kenya Kwanza Alliance, which may prefer Sakaja.

Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula has sent a piece of advice to Wiper Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Through his official Twitter account, the Bungoma senator who is also a Kenya Kwanza Alliance co-principal told Kalonzo not to allow political turncoats to shape his destiny.

Wetang’ula advised the former Vice President to think carefully before entering any coaltion deal with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

He cited the history of betrayal and deceit, plus the arrogance being displayed as reasons why Kalonzo should turn down any calls for him to board the Azimio La Umoja train.

“My dear brother and friend Vp Kalonzo don’t allow political turncoats to shape your destiny. With the history of betrayal and deceit, plus the arrogance being displayed, think carefully before you enter the tent,” tweeted Wetang’ula.

Kalonzo has remained indecisive on whether to go alone, join Deputy President William Ruto’s side or Raila’s side.

Wetang’ula’s advice comes just hours after Kalonzo hosted his OKA counterpart Gideon Moi and Jimmy Kibaki who is the party leader of the New Democrats Party.

Kanu party leader Gideon Moi earlier today denied the media reports that the party was planning to ditch One Kenya Alliance (OKA) for Azimio la Umoja.

In a statement, the Kanu chairman said the party is firmly in OKA.

He has further said that OKA was united as a coalition, “and we have taken a common position that our talks with the Azimio and any other parties, must be structured, open and honest if we are to make progress.”

Gideon Moi has said that sentiments by Party Secretary-General Nick Salat, including the declaration that the party will attend the Azimio coalition NDC on Saturday, were his personal opinions.
