Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has spoken out following an increase in the number of defilement and murder cases against women and children in Kenya.

In a press statement issued out on Monday, July 19, the former Prime Minister condemned the incidences, calling on the National Police to protect women and children from predators who are out to take away their lives.

He also called on the Judiciary to assure Kenyans that justice will come swiftly and fairly where lives have been senselessly lost.

“Justice is taking too long to come if it ever does for the victims…Kenyans must speak out loudly against the slaughter of children and gender-based violence. These murders cannot be treated as personal or family matters. These are Kenyan matters and must be treated as such,” reads Raila’s statement in part.

The African Union envoy noted that the perpetrators of the incidences must be stopped and be brought to book.

His statement comes just days after a serial killer, Evans Juma Wanjala who lured, assaulted, defiled and murdered five girls was arrested.

In yet another similar event, Masten Milimu Wanjala, a 20-year-old man admitted to the kidnappings, execution of two minors in cold blood in Kabete.

The children were identified as Charles Opindo Bala, 13 who went missing on June 30, 2021, and Mutuku Musyoka, 12 who went missing on July 8. They were found in a thicket in Kabete, Kiambu County.

Police officers on Friday July 16, 2021 opened fire at Ntuene primary school, injuring several pupils in an effort to arrest one of their teachers.

According to reports, the officers fired in the air about five times to scare away the pupils who were protesting the arrest of their teacher.

The pupils are said to have pelted stones at the police in protest of the arrest.

A source who spoke to one of the leading local dailies indicated that the police opened fire after they were overwhelmed by the pupils.

Ntuene Primary school headteacher Angello Kamenchu has condemned the incident, saying that the police acted unprofessional by opening fire in school in the presence of the children.

“They should have arrested her at home. The officers used excessive force. They tore her clothes in the arrest process,” the headteacher stated.

Reports further indicated the police stormed the school to arrest the teacher while pupils were in the assembly for their closing day parade. The teacher allegedly had a dispute with a local trader.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly hacking into the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) database, acquired personal details of 61,617registered voters from a county in western Kenya and defrauded them of money running into millions of shillings.

According the the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect was in possession of data which contained names of registered voters, their ID numbers and dates of birth.

Using the fraudulently acquired personal details, the suspect then contact different wireless carriers and convince the customer service agents that they are the true owners of the line. Upon successful SIM swapping, the suspect is granted full access to the victim’s online accounts.

The 21-year-old believed to have previously worked for one of Kenya’s mobile phone networks, was arrested in Juja by DCI sleuths from Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, supported by Safaricom’s fraud investigations team and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology security officers, on Friday July 16, 2021.

The suspect is also believed to have been operating a high-tech mobile phone scam syndicate. Upon his arrest, a gunny bag full of SIM cards belonging to Safaricom, Airtel and Telcom mobile phone service providers was recovered.

His arrest followed a joint operation by DCI detectives and Safaricom investigators after the suspect swindled an MPESA agent, an unspecified amount of money.

The fraudster masquerading as an M-PESA customer care attendant, called the agent and lured her into dialing unspecified codes.

Before the agent realized that she was in a phony call, she had already lost cash from her money lending account. The money was sent to an MPESA account belonging to one of the fraudulently acquired SIM cards, before being transferred to an account at Cooperative bank.

The suspect who has only been identified as Kiprop and his accomplices who narrowly escaped the arrest, is believed to have swindled unsuspecting members of the public millions of shillings through this pretentious scheme.

Ruto with Waiguru

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has told Deputy President William Ruto not to use the just concluded Kiambaa by-election as a determining factor for the 2022 general election.

Taking to her official social media handles on Friday July 16, 2021, Waiguru said that DP Ruto needs over 100 per cent of Mt Kenya support if he has to convert Kiambaa win ahead of 2022.

Waiguru’s comment comes just hours after DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Njuguna Wanjiku won against rival Kariri Njama of Jubilee in the concluded by-elections.

In the finally tally that was declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday morning, Njuguna garnered 21,773 votes while Njama followed closely with 21,263 votes.

Waiguru said the results should worry DP Ruto who, according to her, needs 101 per cent of Mt Kenya support if his candidacy is to convert to the State House.

She noted that the results also mean that Jubilee party’s core supporters are unhappy and urgent action is needed to forestall further downwards slide.

According to Waiguru, by-elections in Kenya’s electoral history have always been outliers with little or no relationship with the general election.

Controversial Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has sparked mixed reactions on social media after advising Jubilee party to rig the remaining two polling stations in the just concluded Kiambaa by-election.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had suspended tallying of votes in Kiambaa after a fracas broke out at Karuri Secondary School in the morning of Friday, July 16 when Jubilee candidate Kariri Njama claimed the by-election was being rigged in favour of UDA’s John Njuguna.

In a video circulating online, Kariri is seen protesting the results which placed Njuguna in the lead with 21,606 votes.

Kariri on the other hand had 21,151 votes after votes from 153 polling stations out of 154 had been tallied.

But taking to his official Twitter account this morning, Babu Owino advised the ruling Jubilee party to rig the remaining polling stations so as to spare President Uhuru Kenyatta from embarrassment.

According to the controversial lawmaker, Jubilee has all it needs to win the concluded by-election in Kiambaa. Babu Owino said Jubilee has the police, IEBC and NYS, which should aid them in rigging.

“I urge the Jubilee government to rig in the remaining 2 polling stations at Kiambaa Constituency.Stop embarrassing President Uhuru. You have the police(Rungus and Teargas),IEBC and you also have NYS.Rig rig rig,” tweeted Babu Owino.

Babu Owino’s post sparked mixed reactions from netizens, with some telling him off for publicly advocating for rigging.

Some said that Babu Owino was inciting the public to cause violence should the rigging happen as he wishes.

“And if that happens, will violence not ERUPT? this is basically incitement to violence,” one of the users posted.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has responded to Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria after he claimed that a section of its clerks were being used to rig the Kiambaa by-election.

Moses Kuria through his official Facebook account on Thursday July 15 claimed that IEBC clerks from Kingothua Primary polling station had sneaked out KIEMS kits and that they were using them to conduct voting at Valentine growers plantation.

Kuria went ahead to share pictures of the vehicle that was allegedly being used to ferry the clerks, arguing that he had tried to reach out to IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati but he was not picking his calls.

However, IEBC in response to the claims said that Moses Kuria was making false allegations. The electoral agency noted that the said vehicle is one of its vehicles and that it was being used by the commission’s staff who are providing technical support in the polling process in Kiambaa.

“The car in question is an IEBC vehicle being used by Commission staff who are providing technical support to the polling process. The post by Moses Kuria is therefore a false allegation,” tweeted IEBC.

Cate Waruguru with Ruto

Laikipia County Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru has broken her silence on claims that she has joined Deputy President William Ruto’s camp.

Reports had circulated on social media that the controversial lawmaker had ditched the ruling Jubilee party to join DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

While addressing the media on Wednesday July 14, Waruguru claimed that the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party is in limbo.

According to her, much needs to be done to restore the public confidence in the ruling party.

“There has been a massive exodus from the Jubilee Party and I have seen speculations from the members of the public asking whether Waruguru has moved to the ‘wheelbarrow’ side. My answer to their speculations is relative, every serious politician, you listen to your electorates. I am on my own. My bosses are the voters and the people of Laikipia,” Waruguru said.

She further noted that she will be making an announcement very soon telling the country of her decision.

The MP added that the people will be the ones to decide as to which side they would like to vote in terms of the parties.

Amos Kimunya

National Assembly Majority leader Amos Kimunya was on Thursday July 15 kicked out of a polling station by rowdy youths during the ongoing Kiambaa by-election.

The Kipipiri MP was ordered out of Kimuga Polling Station by the group of youths shortly after he arrived, accusing him of interfering with the voting exercise.

According to the youths, Kimunya is neither an agent nor a voter at any polling station in Kiambaa. They insisted that he had no any business in the region and ordered him out.

The MP’s efforts to calm down the youths failed as they continued to shout “Kimunya must go”.

Kimunya finally left the venue after being escorted out of the centre by GSU officers, sparking celebration from the youths.

Normalcy has hence been restored at the polling station, with the voting process going on well.

The voting exercise kicked off today at 6:20 am and will continue throughout the day. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned politicians against interfering with the exercise.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday evening, Kiambaa Returning Officer Peter Muigai said political parties’ super agents will not be allowed in the polling stations.

The Kiambaa parliamentary seat fell vacant following the passing on of MP Paul Koinange on March 31.

Jubilee’s Kariri Njama is facing off United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate John Njuguna Wanjiku in a high-stakes vote pitting President Uhuru Kenyatta against his deputy William Ruto.

Other candidates in the by-election include Richard Njoroge (The New Democrats Party), Isaac Karomo (Federal Party of Kenya), Willie Mbugua (Independent), David Mugo (Independent), Evans Wainaina (Independent), Njoroge Harrison (Independent) among others.

Jubilee party candidate in the Kiambaa by-election Karanja Kariri Njama has broken his silence over claims that he has pulled out of the mini poll.

Speaking shortly after speculations that he had pulled out of the hotly contested race, Kariri Njama dismissed the claims, arguing that the rumours are being spread by his opponents who have already sensed defeat.

Reports had emerged that a section of Kiambaa constituency voters had started receiving text messages alleging that Kariri Njama had pulled out of the race.

Blogger Robert Alai took to his official Twitter account to accuse the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party of accessing the Kiambaa voters’ database and sent messages to them saying that the Jubilee candidate had withdrawn. Dailytrends.co.ke cannot, however, substantiate the blogger’s allegation, since that is his own opinion.

The highly anticipated Kiambaa by-election is set for Thursday, July 15, and stakes in the mini poll are high.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission cleared eight candidates to compete in the race. Kariri Njama will fly the ruling Jubilee Party’s flag in the Kiambaa by-election.

He was awarded the party’s ticket to run for the parliamentary seat after emerging as the best candidate following rigorous interviews conducted by the outfit’s officials.

UDA party associated with Deputy President William Ruto unveiled John Njuguna Wanjiku as its flagbearer in the contest.

The Kiambaa MP seat fell vacant following the death of Paul Koinange on Wednesday, March 31. Koinange was elected Kiambaa MP on a Jubilee Party ticket in the 2017 General Election.

Making a right career choice has remained a challenge among many people. Or is it?

Over a long period of time, people have found themselves in a predicament of having to choose what they are passionate about.

Well, many if not all have heard of such cases or experienced at one point but the big question still remains, what is the cause of all these?

Choosing a career can be hard especially when you have a wide range of choices that you are interested in.

Wrong career choices

In most cases, people have found themselves in wrong careers, but how does this just happen? Well, most people choose careers basing on different aspects. Some pursue careers as a result of influence from their parents, guardians or friends and there is also another category that choose courses because of the name and a group that choose courses basing on their gender.

During our early years in school, we dreamt of becoming big tittles in the society but we happen to change our mindsets as we step to the next ladder.

Uncertainty in careers choices

Uncertainty in careers choices does not only affect high school graduates but also college students who ran for courses they did not have passion in, that is why we hear most university graduates saying at the end of their course that “I have finished my parents course”.

Farida Abdallah a youth coordinator at SOS Children’s Village ,states that she has taken the initiative of supporting young people attend national career programs to ensure that youths understand what the career selection process is all about.

She also gives one on one mentorship on career guidance and have access to labor information of current employer needs to be able to meet marketable courses with accordance to an individuals interests.

“I help high school youths in subject selection with the choice of specialization based on individual abilities, talents and skills,” she said.

Career path should be a personal choice basing on one’s goals and passion. According to Anam Javed a student of Fashion Design at Asian Institute of fashion design, her career choice was greatly influenced by self-awareness and diverse experiences. She states that passion has always driven her to achieve all her
goals.

“Career is the most important path and you should be the decision- maker, because when you stop making decisions for yourself people try to take control,” said Javed.

Anam acknowledges the fact that gender has been a hindrance for many young girls to pursue their dream courses in East Asian countries where women are merely given a chance to go to school. She expresses her happiness as her parents helped her make a bold move.

“Fashion designing is a male dominated field but women in Pakistan have earned their names. I am willing to be a top-notch designer renowned across the globe,” she said.

Parents have a great influence on child’s behavior or attitude towards a certain course. In most cases ,parents wants their kids to pursue courses that they feel that their child deserves instead of exploring where their potential and passion lies .

This will give parents swift time in mentoring their child into the right courses.

Ann Njeru a mother of two, says that she never had anyone to guide her on what course to pursue which gave her a hard time before joining college and that challenged her to take her children through mentorship programs whether online or physical to ensure her children are satisfied with the courses they select as they transit to college.

In Africa, many communities have been so stereotypical about girls and young women acquiring education or becoming leaders.

African traditions that hinder women from achieving their goals should be sensitized on the importance of
education for girls.

The unquenchable desire for women to acquire education has been spearheaded by great women lead organizations such as the UN women to at least ensure that gender equality is achieved in all fields.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields (STEM) are courses that have always been pursued by the male gender but with the empowerment women have also been able to pursue these fields.

It’s now clear that women have similar ambitions as men do but many women lack motivation to pursue
their dream careers.

I have seen many graduates working in fields they never trained for, this should act as a challenge for parents, teachers or lay leaders to empower children to follow their passion at an early age.
