Senators have voted to uphold the impeachment of Wajir County Governor Mohamed Abdi.

In a vote that took place on the night of Monday May 17, 2021, a total of 25 senators voted in favour of the ouster motion.

Two senators voted against the motion while four abstained.

The Governor had earlier made a passionate appeal to senators to be sympathetic and humane to him and spare his job.

The county chief appealed to the House to carefully study the charge that has been sustained by the committee that investigated his ouster, and give him another chance.

He pleaded before the plenary after a House committee that investigated his ouster recommended his removal for violating Article 43 of the Constitution.

The committee chaired by Nyamira senator Okong’o Omogeni had found the governor culpable of running down the health care system in the county thus compromising the right to health of the residents.

However, the governor said the offence does not amount to gross violation of the Constitution and proceeded to list the achievements his administration had made in the health sector.

A contingent of officers led by their police boss last night raided Kisii governor James Ongwae’s home who was holding a political meeting with the ODM brigade ahead of the Bonchari by-elections.

The incident was brought to light in a statement by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna on Friday, May 14, claiming harassment over the Bonchari by-election in the region.

“The governor was at the time having a meeting with Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri and another county leader when the officers descended on his premise with guns and teargas,” Sifuna stated.

In the statement, Sifuna alleged that the police boss had been informed that an unlawful assembly was taking place in the governor’s residence.

Speaking on the incident, Ongwae stated that even though he preferred to steer clear of political chaos, the incident had shaken him.

“The intimidation by the police was unnecessary. It is clear that desperate times have led to desperate measures and I have been forced to speak out because the use of excessive force is not good for democracy,” he explained on the incident that occurred on Thursday, May 13.

The ODM party further noted that several intimidation tactics had been used by the police during the campaigns for the Bonchari parliamentary seat.

ODM picked former Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) Director-General Pavel Oimeke to fly the Orange flag.

On its part, Jubilee chose former legislator Zebedeo Opore to battle for the seat.

Food is the most primal form of comfort to everybody. And a healthy outside starts from inside. We all
eat so as we can live healthy and long. However, most people tend to spend a lot of money on junk foods i.e pizza, hamburgers, sweet desserts, soft drinks etc..which are considered hazardous to our
bodies.

Occasionally some do it unaware, often some do it trivially. Consuming these foods regularly is unhealthy to our bodies and can lead to risk of numerous disorders.

They are often high in calories, fat, cholesterol, sugar and salt components, they normally offer no
nutritional value. Since they tend to reduce the level of body concentration they call for Chronic
diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, among other dangerous
conditions.

These junk food are associated with the rise of numerous cancer diseases. According to research,
separately men show high risk of lung cancer and women showed a high risk of liver and
postmenopausal breast cancer.

In our daily lives, most people complain about severe stomach pains. This is obviously caused by what
kind of foods we eat.

Not knowing what might happen next if it continues, they assume is just for a short
time.

It also facilitates the fact that individuals who consumes junk food are predisposed towards H.
pylori.

After many years, they can cause sores, called ulcers, in the lining of your stomach which for
some people, the infection can lead to stomach cancer.

How easy is it to acquire a bag of chips compared to fresh vegetables at your local convenience store?

That’s the question we need to take into consideration. Dwelling more on organic food helps in many
ways, reduce the risk of developing cancer which are skin cancers, prostate cancer and colorectal
cancer.

This is important for people to focus on the risk factors they can control. You do not have to wait until you’re dying to take precautions and think about living.

Living for tomorrow is living today. Reality is all these diseases can be prevented by choosing to eat quality food such as vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, whole grains and healthy sources of proteins. Medicine is not
health care rather a sick care. Quality food is health care. It is time we see it for what it is.

A heavy down pour being witnessed across the country turned tragic in Nairobi’s Kibra slams on Thursday night after at least four people got killed by floods.

Reports indicate that the victims met their death after they were swept by floods while crossing Mutuine River in Kibra, Nairobi.

This followed heavy rains that were experienced in the city and it’s environs on Thursday evening.

According to witnesses, the four were swept away by the raging water as they tried to cross a bridge there.

Their bodies were however yet to be found on Friday morning.

A search and rescue mission was ongoing in the area with hopes of finding them.

Police and rescuers said they fear more deaths would be reported because of the floods that affected various informal settlements in the city.

Nairobi police boss Augustine Nthumbi said teams had been mobilized to help in the search and rescue missions.

He added they are conducting a survey to check the extent of the issue. Property of unknown value was destroyed in the floods that ensued.

Residents of some estates reported flooding in their areas which affected their operations.

Some residents were forced to endure long hours on the road while others were forced to spend the night on the road following heavy rains that continue to pound the capital.

The heavy downpour resulted in heavy traffic gridlock, flooded roads as well as cutting off of sections of roads making the movement of traffic a nightmare.

Motorists and commuters alike have had to suffer the consequences of the heavy rains with others forced to spend the night on the road.

The situation has been worsened by ongoing infrastructural developments going on across the city with the construction of the Nairobi Expressway playing a major role in the mess.

Motorists have been forced to wade through flash floods occasioned by heavy rains, with Kenya Meteorological Department warning the rains will continue throughout the week.

Nairobi Hospital is set to fire more than 200 employees in a move aimed at cutting costs and clearing out staff implicated in a recent graft audit.

This is after the health facility received a nod from Court.

Justice Nzioki wa Makau dismissed a petition by Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels Educational Institutions Hospitals and Allied Workers (Kudheiha) saying it was premature since a letter by the management to the union dated March 10, was meant to open talks between the parties ahead of the restructuring plan.

The premier hospital wants to fire workers who either performed poorly or had been involved in unethical practices that were exposed in the recent forensic audit.

“Besides the staff affected by normal rationalisation, the hospital is disengaging with all staff who have perennial performance issues or were implicated in unethical practices during forensic audits,” the hospital said in a statement.

Kudheiha rushed to the Employment and Labour court to block the layoffs saying the move was targeting its members and the plan, which was disguised as restructuring, was done without following the mandatory procedures set out in the Employment Act.

But Justice Makau said since the letter was meant for dialogue, the proper solution in the case is to allow the union and the management to consult on the way forward.

Like other institutions in the country, Nairobi Hospital said it has been struggling financially amid swelling operational costs and lower revenues in the wake of an economic slowdown worsened by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

But in an affidavit, the secretary- general of the union Albert Njeru said operations at the hospital were going on as usual. He said the hospital has been experiencing shortage of beds as admissions for Covid-19 patients surged, in the last eight months. According to Mr Njeru, it was insincere of the hospital to say that business has been shrinking.

The hospital admitted writing the letter, which was copied to Cabinet Secretary for Labour, intending to reduce the number of staff. The court heard that there was nothing wrong to reduce staff because of economic downturn caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future.” These priceless words which I hold in high esteem were uttered by the late South African president Nelson Mandela. Indeed a community’s virtue is judged by how it treats the weakest and most vulnerable among them. While there has been focus on other deserving groups in our community such as children, women and youth, the weakest of the lot, our elders have been neglected. This neglect is evidenced through the daily challenges they face accessing food and health care.

Ahmed Rashid Jibril. Photo/ Courtesy.

Prohibitive food prices reflect on the elders’ malnutrition and daily hunger. We have elders who attribute their lives to the fact that they cannot access food on a regular basis. Without jobs or any way of earning a living, elders are reduced to begging to survive. Our elders played their part in nation building and it is now our duty to support them in their old age. Our society cannot abandon its responsibility and duty to the elderly in our communities.

Secondly, healthcare which can be measured by affordability and accessibility has become practically unattainable for the elders who need it most. The exorbitant cost of basic health services has deterred the elderly from seeking to improve their health. Additionally, due to the total imbalance between various counties, some of the elders find themselves living in areas with gravely inadequate hospital facilities. Our elders suffer from plenty of underlying issues such as hypertension and diabetes that come with age. A simple flu equates to a death sentence. In contrast, other countries have provided medical cover, subsidized transport and food to the elderly. We in Kenya have experimented with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) for the elderly with very limited success. Health coverage to our elders is both essential and urgent.

Ahmed Rashid Jibril. Photo/ Courtesy.

With the eruption of a global pandemic, the situation for the elders has gotten worse. The few individuals with their kindly hands extended and upon whom the needy elders relied have suffered as their own income has been significantly curtailed. The entire nation is struggling and the elders bear the brunt of the punctured economy. In terms of healthcare, the seniors face a fearsome degree of mortality. In 2020, our organization, the Mama Ibado Charity saw a nine percent increase in mortality rates compared to 2019’s six percent. This is the highest drastic increase we’ve had in our ten years of service. The uncertainty of whether or not they died of coronavirus is attributed to inadequate testing in remote lands.
With the introduction of vaccines, there seems to be a glimmer of hope despite its limited availability. Recently, our volunteers in Isiolo interacted with our valued beneficiaries in order to gather their opinion. The elders unanimously expressed a skeptical, cynical and dismissive view, attributing the vaccine to guaranteed death. Such extreme and unenlightened opinions emanate from lack of awareness and misinformation. We need to educate and vaccinate our elders quickly before the danger of Covid-19 takes a deadly root in this vulnerable group.

Ahmed Rashid Jibril. Photo/ Courtesy.

Despite the state’s efforts to implement safety net programs and health insurance targeting the elderly, more needs to be done. The national government has a vested responsibility to take the lead in collapsing the steep hierarchical gap that places indigent seniors at rock bottom. There is a need to introduce sustainable programs such as various forms of subsidies and insurance for the elders. They can also provide tax concessions to individuals and organizations who actively contribute to charities that support the elderly. The county governments need to find within them the power to summon up alternative initiatives that will alleviate the pitiful conditions of the elders. In addition to governmental efforts, corporations and wealthy individuals need to form a meaningful alliance with the humanitarian purpose of restoring a dignified life to the elders. Companies can begin by dedicating a certain percentage of their revenue to charity while individuals can sacrifice a small amount of their income to impact destitute lives. Our actions need to be preceded by sincere intentions to support our elders regardless of their multiple identities, be it religion, ethnicity or tribe.

In essence, each one of us with capable stature and stable income has a responsibility to contribute to the wellbeing of elders. Confining them to a nursing home is not an option available to us. It is not only expensive beyond our means but also a disloyalty to our African values and an alien idea. This article is a national appeal to the Kenyan masses. Let us join hands in reigniting the fire of hope in the hearts of the men and women who sacrificed so much for us and are in dire need to be assisted. As the United Nations dictum goes, “leaving no one behind.” The second and third of the seventeen UN sustainable development goals are “zero hunger” and “good health and well-being”. Our collaborative efforts will prove to be a great antidote to their suffering and restore dignity to our elders and our society.

The writer is Ahmed Rashid Jibril, Mama Ibado Charity (MIC) founder, an independent, non-profit and non-governmental organization (NGO) formed from humble beginnings in 2011 with one objective in mind: Restoring Dignity and Hope to our seniors. Since its initial launch, Founder Ahmed Jibril and his team of dedicated MIC volunteers have grown the MIC organization from feeding 50 seniors in 2011 in Isiolo County, to 650 seniors in Isiolo and Kakamega Counties in less than a decade.

Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula has declared his final position on the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020, famously known as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum Bill.

The Bungoma Senator on Saturday May 8, 2021 through his official Twitter account defended his earlier position on the bill, saying that he was only a critic of the BBI referendum bill.

Wetang’ula on Tuesday made a surprise move, calling for radical amendments on the bill that has hence received a nod from the Members of National Assembly.

Wetang’ula who is a principal in the One Kenya Alliance said to be enjoying the blessings of President Uhuru Kenyatta, said the bill contains several provisions that will erode the gains the country has made.

Speaking during the debate on the Bill in the senate chambers on Tuesday, Wetangula said the provisions are a clawback and should be changed by parliament to realign them to the Constitution.

The senator took issue with the second schedule of the Bill that creates 70 constituencies, creation of the Judiciary Ombudsam, scrapping of 47 woman rep positions in the National Assembly and creation of the Youth Commission.

“I don’t understand why we are creating a Youth Commission. We have so many laws that govern our youth. Kenyans must learn to understand that youth is neither a disadvantage nor a disability. It is a transit state in human life,” he said.

The vocal lawmaker, a lawyer by profession, questioned the constitutionality, rationale and criteria for the creation and allocation of 70 constituencies to some 47 counties.

However, he has defended his position saying that he was only pointing out some of the shortcomings in the BBI bill.

He went ahead to declare his final position on the bill’s vote, saying that he will vote yes for the bill when it will be tabled in the senate.

“It does appear to me that many don’t understand the difference between a critic on a bill and opposing a bill. Pointing out shortcomings in a bill like I did on the BBI bill is a legislator’s duty. I will vote YES for the bill. It’s my and FK party position!” he said.

Wetang’ula’s statement did not, however, go well with a section of Kenyans on Twitter, who have condemned him for pointing out the shortcomings in the BBI referendum bill, but still going ahead to vote YES.

The seeming angry KOT criticized Wetang’ula for endorsing the BBI referendum bill with all the shortcomings he had pointed out.

Here are some of the KOT’s reactions.

Muslim faithful across the globe have been marking the holy month of Ramadan began on April 12, 2021.

The holy month kicked off amid Covid-19 containment measures instituted that had been by the government in five counties, locking down Kiambu, Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos and Nakuru.

This denied the faithful an opportunity to commune together and hold the events that are associated with the Ramadan.

Scores of Muslims in the country are marking Ramadan in a disheartening mood due to the strict government restrictions that directs social distancing and less crowding in public places including mosques.

Ramadan is a month of fasting and socialization as well as helping the needy, however, with the pandemic which has been claiming lives of many in the country with containment measures enforced, this meant a change of activities that have existed since time immemorial.
