President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua Wednesday morning held a meeting with 32 Mps from Jubilee Party at State House, Nairobi.

Reports indicate that the meeting that kicked off at 8am has been attended by Jubilee members from both the National Assembly and Senate.

The Jubilee MPs have committed to work with the government.

Speaking during the meeting, President Ruto said his government was ready to work with anyone despite the political divide.

Ruto told the MPs that they were a family as they all were elected by Kenyans.

The notable politicians who met the president included Nominated MPs Sabina Chege, Margaret Kamar, MPs Yusuf Hassan (Kamukunji) and Adan Keynan (Eldas).

The meeting comes hours after the head of state met a section of Raila Odinga’s ODM MPs on Tuesday.

Among them were Phelix Odiwour – Jalang’o – (Lang’ata), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Tom Ojienda (Kisumu), Shakeel Shabir (Independent – Kisumu Town East) and Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo).

The head of state has been on a charm offensive on the opposition side if the series of meetings with members of the Azimio coalition is anything to go by.

During his meeting with the nine ODM MPs from the Nyanza region, Ruto affirmed that the aim is to foster unity among the leaders to solve the challenges facing Kenyans.

President William Ruto’s daughter Charlene Ruto has come out to clarify on her ‘Office of The First Daughter’ remark after public outcry.

In a press statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Charlene said she referred to the entity handling her diary as Office of the First Daughter in private capacity.

Charlene clarified that the office was neither constitutional, nor was it drawing funds from the National Treasury.

The president’s daughter came under sharp criticism on Tuesday, December 13, when she introduced her delegation to Tanzania as members of staff at the Office of the First Daughter.

At the time, she was addressing delegates at the 2022 YouLead Summit held at the East African Community Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

“The Office of the First Daughter is a private entity. It is neither a constitutional office, nor is it being funded by Kenyan taxpayers. It purely facilitates the activities and programmes run by myself,” Charlene Ruto said.

She further noted that the office amplifies the Kenyan youth’s voices in efforts to enable them get personal development opportunities.

“Through its independent structure and facilitators, the office has engaged various players across Kenya and beyond in line with some of its objectives of championing youth-based agenda and climate change advocacy,” said Charlene Ruto.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit had an embarrassing moment on Monday, December 13, 2022 when he involuntarily wetted his pants while at a national event.

In a video that has since gone viral, Salva Kiir is seen letting urine flow down his trousers while standing as the country’s national anthem is sang.

His security detail, however, noticed the incident but just looked on.

In the video, the seeming embarrassed South Sudanese head of state is seen looking at himself, and stood still as if nothing was happening.

A section of netizens who have reacted to the video, however, have attributed the incident to a medical condition.

However, some argue that it could be a case of age.

The 71-year-old Kiir took over power in South Sudan in 2011 when the country had just been formed.

He had served as president of the semiautonomous region of southern Sudan while simultaneously holding the position of first vice president in the Sudanese national government (2005–11), and he has held the chair of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) since 2005.

President Kiir was commissioning the newly completed 63 km Juba-Terekeka section, which is part of the 392 km Juba-Rumbek highway under construction by China’s Shandong Hi-Speed Co. Ltd (SDHS).

The road is designed to link Central Equatoria State which hosts Juba, the capital of South Sudan, with six other states across the east African country.

Kiir thanked the Chinese government for the cooperation that paved way for the construction of the road.

The SDHS started work on this major highway in November 2019 and currently, the company is working on the 216 km Awerial-Rumbek section.

The four embattled Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners dubbed ‘Cherera Four’ were booked into an exclusive hotel apartments in Kilimani, new evidence has shown.

Yaya Apartments and Hotel

The evidence tabled before a tribunal investigating their conduct has revealed that the four; IEBC vice-chairperson Juliana Cherera, commissioners Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi, and Irene Masit were booked into Yaya Apartments and Hotel by Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition party.

The besieged IEBC commissioners are said to have checked into the hotel on August 15, 2022 at about 8:36pm and checked out on August 19 at about 3:00pm.

Apartment booking

According to Nation, Yaya Apartments management has presented logs that show the four officials’ bookings were done by a person identified as Edwin Ong’ong’a Ogwe.

Mr Ogwe did not accompany the commissioners when they checked in after holding a press conference at the Serena Hotel, in which they distanced themselves from presidential election results declared at Bomas of Kenya by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Mr Ogwe went to the apartments the following day, August 16, to pay for the rooms.

CCTV Footage

The hotel has released to the tribunal’s lead counsel Peter Murage the visitors’ book, the log-in details as well as CCTV footage and identity of some of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leaders who visited the commissioners at the apartments and payment vouchers.

The Azimio officials included the secretary-general of a party in the coalition, the personal assistant of one of the party leaders who is also a member of the Azimio Council, as well as a leading operative in the outfit’s executive council.

Four petitioners want the four commissioners kicked out of the IEBC for rejecting the presidential election results announced by Mr Chebukati on August 15, when he declared Dr Ruto the winner of the hotly contested elections against his main challenger, Raila Odinga.

The tribunal led by Court of Appeal judge Aggrey Muchelule fixed the hearing date during a status conference on Friday last week after the tribunal overruled Ms Masit’s objections on the proceedings.

She had argued that she has a pending court case that has a bearing on the tribunal’s proceedings. The tribunal, however, ruled that there was no stay order from the court suspending the hearings.

Bungoma Senatorial by-election

On By-election, Wamukota expressed his dissatisfaction at the turnout of the voters saying that it was so low and in future the residents should consider coming out to express their democratic right if given an opportunity and vote in leaders of their choice instead  of ignoring only to lament when regret later.

The low turnout of voters was experienced during the Bungoma senatorial by election on 8th of December.

The Bungoma senate seat was declared vacant by the Independent Electoral Commission and Boundaries (IEBC) after the then elected Senator Moses Wetangula was voted in as the speaker of the national assembly.

President William Ruto Wednesday morning hosted the Kenya Kwanza parliamentary group meeting at State House Nairobi.

During the 7am meeting, the UDA MPs were told that the ongoing vetting of Principal Secretaries has been temporarily suspended due to the court order obtained by LSK on Tuesday.

The Employment Labour Relations Court (ELRC) on Tuesday, November 15, issued orders restraining the National Assembly from vetting Permanent Secretaries (PS) nominated by President Ruto.

Justice Nzioki Makau ruled that the process be suspended until the hearing and determination of the application slated for Monday, November 21.

Justice Nzioki barred the Principal Secretary nominees from appearing before Members of Parliament from various committees.

Also, in the filed case, the Law Society of Kenya has challenged the list of nominees, arguing that it lacks gender, ethnic and regional balance.

Ruto during the State House meeting also told UDA MPs to focus on delivery and avoid “pushing for selfish and self-serving legislation like changing the Constitution to remove term limits.”

The meeting called by the President Ruto comes amid intensified lobby for the five slots for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) membership.

Jubilee party has threatened to exit the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition.

Jubilee Party Members of Parliament have said they will walk out of the political formation if one of their own will not be allowed to sit in the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).

They are now demanding one of the three positions set aside for the minority in the commission.

This is after Senate minority whip Fatuma Dullo’s name was removed from the list and replaced by Nyamira Senator Okongo Omugeni.

Dullo was Wednesday kicked out of the nominees to the PSC by the minority in the Senate.

The decision was endorsed by the Senate, with some members accusing her of being gullible and nominating herself to the commission without the knowledge of the leadership.

Conmanship

Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere who was flanked by 10 other Jubilee MPs on Thursday said most of their members were disgruntled by how they have been treated in the coalition, even during the formation of committees in parliament.

Korere noted that Jubilee was not coerced to join ODM in Azimio and should their mebers be mistreated in the coalition, they will leave willingly.

This, she said, is because they have experienced firsthand the conmanship, politics of deceit, and political banditry by their brothers in Azimio.

Parliamentary group meeting

Eldas MP Adan Keynan said they will be holding a parliamentary group meeting to chart a way forward.

He asked the Azimio leadership to fast track the issue, call for a meeting and allow Jubilee to nominate a candidate to the PSC.

The Azimio coalition has struggled to fill the few positions available to them with Jubilee first proposing Sirisa MP John Waluke to the commission.

However, his name was removed from the final list presented to parliament.

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga’s last born daughter Winnie Odinga has opened up on some of the family’s most guarded secrets.

Winnie in an emotional interview with the Sunday Nation revealed two instances that would have left Raila dead.

The 31-year-old Winnie told the local daily that in March 2021, she almost lost his father, who was at the time preparing to announce his 2022 presidential bid.

The day Raila almost died

According to Winnie, two incidents happened at Raila’s Karen home that almost left him dead.

This was at the time Raila contracted Covid-19.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader was in March 2019 admitted at the Nairobi Hospital after he tested positive for Covid-19 but was later discharged to self-quarantine and recuperate at his Karen home.

This is the time the scare hit his family and his close allies.

Raila spent the following days in bed isolated and weak.

Winnie notes that his condition was so serious that he had to skip a planned ceremony at State House to mark the third anniversary of the March 9, 2018 Handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The scariest bid is when Winnie walked into Raila’s isolation room only to find an oxygen mask had dropped off from her father’s face.

A panicked Winnie had to act fast and save his father.

She picked and fixed the mask back, quickly restoring the condition of her father, who only seconds earlier lay helpless gasping for breath.

Some days later, Winnie again walked into the room only to find the father looking blank and motionless. His temperature had terribly shot.

To save him, she quickly stashed paracetamol tablets into his mouth with a view to reduce his body temperature.

Winnie Odinga’s role in Raila’s presidential campaign

Winnie also opened up on her central role in her father’s presidential campaign and succession politics.

There is a special bond between Raila and his daughter Winnie that is difficult break.

When Raila was down, Winnie reportedly drove him around Karen area with the car windows open. And to cheer him up she occasionally played for him selected beats, including by artists from Germany, where the ODM leader schooled in university.

Raila would mumble the German song titles and daughter would make several trials by keying them into google, until the appropriate song popped up.

Conflict with Raila political allies

While this is a heart-warming development, it appears a poisoned chalice, which places Winnie in a position of constant conflict and competition with other employees or political allies of his father.

In fact, as early as last year, there were people who were uncomfortable with her presence in the Azimio campaign, and she opted out since she did not wish to be stumbling block to her father’s political success.

But the father would hear none of it.

“I insisted on stepping aside but he declined, and the ping-pong went on and on. Meanwhile, he continued giving me assignments, including when we drove to an event and he would want a phrase or facts in his speech changed and I would quickly do so and print out a fresh copy for him. Since I could not decline helping him out, in the end I decided to stay on,” Winnie told the Sunday Nation.

She told off those accusing her of playing a role in Raila’s loss to President William Ruto, noting that she was just a mere worker and supporter in the Azimio campaigns.

“I was a mere worker and a supporter, just like the other millions of Kenyans. Yet again, elections are complex processes and ours was no exception. Two years later, America is still struggling to get to the bottom of what happened with their elections in 2020, without forgetting 2016. The UK took time to get to the bottom of the Brexit vote and the role of Cambridge Analytica,” she said.

She said that she has been only branded arrogant because of being assertive.

Ministry of Defence Cabinet Secretary nominee Aden Duale has disclosed his net worth.

Duale who was appearing before the parliamentary committee while being vetted for the position said his financial net worth is Ksh. 851 million.

The immediate former Garissa Township MP said the net worth includes the assets he own, that is goats, sheep and 231 camels.

From his assets, Duale receives Sh10 Million annually.

Duale is a well seasoned politician having first won elections in 2007 General Election in Dujis Constituency seat on an ODM ticket to soon become the first northeastern MP to be appointed assistant minister—in the Livestock ministry.

In 2013 he was appointed as the Majority Leader of the National Assembly but he was forced out in 2019 an aftermath of the fallout between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto who was his deputy then.

His appointment was nothing unprecedented as he was the only senior politician from the Raila Odinga-leaning northern Kenya who stood with then-Deputy President Ruto and his UDA party during the August general election.

His political friendship with the President dates back to the formation of the United Republican Party (URP), which merged with former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance (TNA) party to form the Jubilee Coalition that won the 2013 and 2017 elections.

Earlier on, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said that his financial net worth is about Kshs. 4 billion.

Mudavadi said his current and anticipated income are from rental income, dividends from shareholding, interests and other expenses that come from the farm.
