Deputy President Dr William Ruto’s multi-million shilling Karen home that sits on four-acre piece of land now serves as an executive wing of the Weston Hotel that has become the nerve centre and his political power centre, a local daily reports.

According to the Standard, the once palatial family home for the DP’s family has now been turned into an exclusive guest house.

“The hotel is currently undergoing renovation and expansion, but it will be ready and open next month,” said a source involved in renovations as quoted by the local daily.

Reports further indicate that the renovations are expected to upgrade it into a top-of-the-range facility for the affluent clientele complete with a presidential suite that could cost a fortune a night.

Ruto moved into the house in 2010 from an older house within the compound. When he became the Deputy President in 2013, the exigencies of his office- including security- necessitated his move to the official residence which had been completed a year before.

The residence has several houses including two 3 bedroom maisonettes, for the house keeper, security officers and other staff.

Initially the DP was reluctant to move to his official residence after Jubilee came into power. Besides, the house required minor adjustments and refurbishment.

“In his hustler spirit, he decided that the house could give him a coin or two for the family instead of letting it stay unoccupied,” said one of the aides who sought anonymity.

“It is an exclusive hotel or you can call it a guest house, but it is only for the top notch clientele, or when he has guests and wants to have very private meetings,” he added.

Once completed, the guest house will add to Ruto’s ventures into the hospitality industry coming after Weston Hotel, which describes itself ‘as a four-star, a classic, luxurious hotel tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Nairobi Central Business District.

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has since shifted his base to Nairobi after the court barred him from accessing his Kiambu office.

Waititu who is facing corruption charges has over the past few days been operating from his office along Nairobi’s Koinange Street, in a building he owns.

He had also been holding his executive meetings at the same place after the court ruled that he cannot access his offices in Kiambu County until his case is heard and determined.

Confirming the same, the county boss said that his executive powers allow him to operate from anywhere, rubbishing claims of trying to sabotage his deputy James Nyoro who has since announced taking over the county’s leadership.

“What is wrong with meeting my friends in my building? It is my right to meet whoever I want. My meetings have nothing to do with sabotaging Nyoro. Why sabotage him when I have executive powers? I am still his boss,” he was quoted by a local daily.

He added that he remains in charge, and can hold meetings wherever he deems necessary as the court never took his powers away.

“The court never reduced my powers to run the affairs of Kiambu. I can meet my ministers even at my home and discuss issues that affect the people who voted for me,” added the controversial county chief.

West Pokot Governor John Krop Lonyangapuo seems not to have left it at ‘kijana fupi nono round’ joke! The County chief who has won hearts of many Kenyans with his hilarious comics has made another joke most associated with his Kiambu counterpart Ferdinand Waititu.

While explaining to K24 TV anchor, Betty Kyallo, about why his county is better than Nairobi and Kiambu, he found himself mentioning the ‘moving rivers’ joke.

He argued that Nairobi and Kiambu had replaced fertile agricultural land with buildings and filled with scandals.

“The good news is that there is a very great wakening here and a desire that they want to do greater things than what they have done.

“We are now into cash crops like no other county before. You people are destroying yours by ‘planting’ houses in Nairobi and Kiambu and moving rivers yet here we are doing it,” stated the governor amidst laughter.

Betty described Lonyangapuo as a lively guest, “For real, he is hilarious! Such an amazing leader. Enjoying the shoot. You guys will love it!”

The journalist also revealed that the Governor showed her some survival tactics in the countryside (ushago).

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has put Siaya County Assembly on spot after a name of a dead member was listed among those who travelled to Jinja, Uganda in February.

A report by the anti-graft agency indicates that Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) stage-managed the controversial trip after they travelled to the Kenya-Ugandan Border.

It is claimed that the MCAs only had their passports stamped and returned home without attending a workshop in Uganda on the said trip.

Upon their investigation, EACC were shocked that the late Mr Joanes Andiego Odongo’s name was included in the list.

At the time of his death, Mr Odongo was the Central Sakwa MCA who also served as the Majority Whip at the assembly.

The MCA died on May 17, 2018, after a long battle with liver and kidney complications.

He was later succeeded by his son Charlton Andiego in the subsequent by-election.

According to the documents in possession of the EACC, the late MCA made it to the trip and was paid all the allowances.

However, in their defence, the county assembly noted that there was an alleged mix-up in the names.

County Assembly Speaker George Okode told the Nation on phone that as a requirement for controls on foreign trips, MCAs were expected to get clearance from the Ministry of Devolution and while doing so, the secretariat that was organising the trip could have generated the erroneous list by mistake.

“When I asked the clerk, who keeps the records he told me that the list had been generated and sent to the ministry for clearance and it was only realised later that it had some errors, “ stated Mr Okode.

He further noted that they had all the evidence that the trip happened, including photos and video recordings of the training in a hotel in Jinja.

According to the document dated January 21 and signed by the assembly clerk, a total of 43 MCAs had been proposed to attend a benchmarking-cum-training at the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation (LVFO) in Jinja, from February 1 to 15.

During the stay, each legislator pocketed Ksh136,144 and a further transport allowance of Ksh10,000.

All the others were entitled to the same amounts apart from the Speaker who in the document is indicated was to receive Ksh184,346.

The EACC has summoned 41 Siaya MCAs to shed light on the controversial trip.

The ward reps are expected to appear before the detectives in Kisumu from Monday next week to be questioned and to record statements.

Forgery of academic papers has been a common thing among Kenyan politicians. Or is it? Well, several politicians have pending cases in courts over their questionable academic papers, which has become a trend among politicians.

Two executive members from the County Government of Kitui are reportedly facing the sack for having fake university degrees.

According to the MCAs, Trade and Cooperatives Executive, Philip Mumo, and Health and Sanitation Executive, Rosaita Mbukua Ngina, submitted to the House’s Appointment Committee falsified information.

The Standard reported that the MCA’s, on Tuesday, petitioned Governor Charity Ngilu to remove the duo from office for having forged their university degrees.

The MCAs further want the governor to sack the two within a week of passing the resolution.

Failure to do so, the legislators vowed that the Assembly would initiate impeachment motions of the executives.

Majority Leader and Athi Ward MCA, Peter Kilonzo, also recommended that Mumo and Ngina “be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for appropriate disciplinary action”.

Furthermore, the Assembly resolved to push the matter to the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) for recovery of all monies, whether salaries, assets or otherwise, that were received or acquired by the two for the period of their employment.

In May, The University of Nairobi reportedly disowned Meru’s Sports Executive Daniel Kiogora’s degree.

Kiogora had presented his alleged UoN academic papers to the Meru County Assembly during his vetting.

According to the Cabinet member, he graduated with a second-class, upper division Bachelor of Commerce degree from the university in 2010.

However, the academic documents were found to be fake upon inquiry.

As new Bomet County Governor Dr. Hillary Barchok sets to assume office on Thursday, his administration is already facing a possible controversy.

On Wednesday, pictures of a brand new high-end vehicle branded ‘GVN036B’ flooded the internet; with questions thereafter arising as to why Dr. Barchok would not use the vehicles left behind by his predecessor, Dr. Joyce Laboso, who succumbed to Cancer at the Nairobi Hospital on July 29, 2019.

The incoming county chief came under sharp criticism with a section of political pundits terming the alleged action to buy new vehicles as extravagance.

However, in a quick rejoinder issued on Thursday, the county government rubbished the claims that it had purchased for Dr. Barchok a new vehicle, adding that it (county) cannot even afford it.

A source revealed to local daily that the county government had merely hired the vehicle for two days to facilitate Dr. Barchok’s Thursday inauguration and movement afterwards.

They are however yet to speak on the whereabouts of county vehicle used by former Governor Dr. Laboso during her tenure, before her demise.

For those I may have wronged over the past five years, I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me. I have not been wronged by any of you in your capacity as HoDs, I can declare that here. Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko plans to extend services offered by his Sonko Rescue Team across the East African Community region.

The non-profitable organization has over the past 10 years offered services and touched thousands of people especially those in informal settlements.

The services include transportation of the bodies of their loved ones to various parts of the country, provision of clean water to slum-dwellers in Nairobi, provision of access to medical care both within Kenyan and abroad, education of the less fortunate and provision of access to legal services for those who cannot afford ,among others.

This comes as the flamboyant Nairobi Governor on Wednesday was yet again recognized and awarded an honorary Doctorate in Excellence in recognition of his long-standing contribution in service to humankind by the European Digital University.

The ceremony was held in Dubai at the Dubai University Campus.

Sonko said he was overwhelmed and never would he have imagined that SRT founded over 10 years ago but was officially registered in 2013 would attract global recognition.

According to him, the honorary doctorate degree has challenged him to do more for the community.

“To this end, I personally commit to extend the works of the Sonko Rescue Team to the larger East African Region, and later across to Africa,”Sonko said.

The Nairobi Governor said his organization has been on the front line in reforming Kenyan youth from crime, drugs and substances abuse among other vices, while supporting them to establish sustainable income generating programs in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Recently, the SRT embarked on a program to fight for the rights of and support helpless widows and their children who have for many years been disinherited of their property due to archaic cultural practices.

These practices have no place in the 21st Century,” he said.

Sonko challenged those with means to help the less fortunate in the society so as to make the world a better place.

Founder-Chancellor of the European Digital University Prof Sidhic A. Muhammed said without service to mankind, life is meaningless.“The quality of life is increased when we help each other out,”he said

The professor also said Sonko’s recognition is a motivation to society and a message that there is always someone watching when we do good for mankind.

Others who attended the ceremony, which also doubled as the launch of the EDU-KWAKOO Blockchain Training and Application Programs, include University of Dubai president Dr Eesa Al Bastaki, Kwakoo Academy CEO Dr Anthony Saint, among others.

In February this year , Sonko was also appointed the Good Deeds Ambassador by the Good Deeds Global, an Israel-based organization for his generosity in helping the needy.

Today (Thursday) will go down in history of former university professor Hillary Barchok as he is set to be sworn in as Bomet County Governor in an event that is to be attended by deputy President Dr William Ruto.

The swearing in follows the demise of Governor Joyce Laboso. Edwin Abonyo, Laboso’s widower has lifted the lid on how the late county boss settled Barchok as her deputy.

This was three years ago, when Barchok was a don at the Chuka University, with details indicating that the county boss settled on him without his knowledge, before informing him.

Speaking during Laboso’s burial on Saturday, Abonyo added that this was followed by an intense search for the latter, ahead of the Jubilee Party primaries, which they proceeded to win.

He said that an initial attempt to consult him over his selection as Laboso’s running mate was futile as he was out of the country, with attempts to reach him on phone also proving futile.

“We almost gave up as his phone was not going through, but eventually we got through to him and set up a meeting. He was a total stranger, but as fate had it, we were bound to run for this together and I am proud we made it,” he said, according to the Wednesday Daily Nation.

This was confirmed by the incoming governor who on Wednesday admitted that he had never been involved in politics previously.

He expressed his gratitude for having worked with the departed leader, vowing to stick to her dreams for the county now that he is taking over.

Homa Bay Town member of parliament Peter Kaluma was on Wednesday engaged in a fight during the morning session at the National Assembly.

The MP disagreed with his Marakwet East counterpart Kangogo Bowen and caused a scuffle on the floor of the House. They had to be separated through the intervention of Majority Leader Aden Duale and the sergeants at arms.

The two were seen engaging in a bitter quarrel which involved pushing and shoving before they were finally separated by their colleagues.

The two legislators seemed to have disagreed over the incident where Kwale Woman Representative Zulekha Hassan entered the chambers carrying her infant.

Mwea MP Kabinga Wachira and Migori Senator Ochillo Ayacko were also involved in the fight but later walked away.

MPs thrown out of Parliament

The Speaker did not take notice of the fight as he was attempting to bring order to the House after unrest caused by the stunt with the Kwale woman rep.

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi, who tried to defend MP Zulekha, was also asked to leave the chambers for being disorderly.

Hillary Barchok will be sworn in as the Bomet governor on Thursday to replace Joyce Laboso who was buried last Saturday.

Barchok faces a daunting task of picking a deputy as pressure mounts that he should pick a woman as his deputy.

The push for a female deputy is from women leaders and some residents.

High ranking individuals in the Jubilee party are keeping an eye on the matter and want Barchok to appoint a woman, not necessarily from the Laboso family.

Among the women likely to take the seat are the county chief of staff Jayne Sigilai, Joyce’s sister Judy Laboso, former Woman Representative Cecilia Ngetich and former senatorial aspirant Stacy Chepkemoi.

Also in the list is the county Education CEC Juliana Yegon, a former principal of Moi Siongiroi Girls’ School.

Ngetich vied for the Sotik parliamentary seat in 2017 but lost to Dominic Koskei.

The deputy governor’s seat is likely to go to Sotik where Laboso came from for fairness in the sharing available leadership positions at the county.

Chepkemoi is among the 15 nominees picked by Jubilee for East African Legislative Assembly position. She failed to secure the seat.

The 26-year-old Maseno University international relations and diplomacy graduate is a former employee at the county government.

She worked as a resource mobiliser in former governor Isaac Rutto’s administration before quitting to join politics.

She is also the current Bomet youth president.

Sigilai is Laboso’s cousin, but little is known about her.

Before politics, Ngetich served as the principal of a number of schools. In 2009, the Nairobi-based Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa appointed her the director.

Men who had lined up for the position have since chickened out after women put up spirited demands that Barchok should be deputised by a woman.

Former Chepalungu MP Paul Bii and Bomet county assembly speaker Shadrack Rotich are among potential picks.

During the  Laboso’s burial at her Koru matrimonial home in Kisumu on Saturday,  Governors Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) and Charity Ngilu (Kitui) said the only way to ensure that the will of the Bomet people of bestowing confidence in a woman by electing a woman as a governor was to have another woman as a deputy.

Waiguru in her eulogy pointed out that there were many able women, hence the need to set the now vacant position for a woman.

She noted: “I know there are some balancing (act to do) but we humbly request that you choose a woman as your deputy. Pick a woman as a deputy, one from Sotik and preferably choose from her family…look at the extended family of Laboso.”

Ngilu echoed the same sentiment calling on Barchok to “honour us by giving us a woman” noting they will be watching over it.

Barchok avoided the talk only saying he will strive to deliver on the wishes of the late governor.

“I will ensure madam governor’s agenda to the people of Bomet is realised,” he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto did not speak on the issue but ODM leader Raila Odinga told Barchok that the position automatically belongs to a woman.

“A woman was a governor and a man was her deputy, now when the woman governor has left the position it is automatic that a woman would become a deputy governor. I don’t think that should be an issue,” he stated.
