Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has stepped forward with a compassionate donation of Kshs. 1 million to aid the victims of the tragic Embakasi gas plant explosion.

The explosion, which occurred in the Mradi area of Embakasi East on Thursday night, claimed three lives and left over 270 people injured.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, took to social media to announce the gracious gesture from Raila Odinga.

According to Owino, the leader of the Azimio coalition sent the funds on Saturday morning, just a day after the devastating incident.

“I received 1 million Kenya Shillings from H.E Baba Raila Amolo Odinga this morning to help the fire victims. In addition, I have donated an extra 1 million shillings towards this noble cause, totaling 2 million shillings. Other Azimio Leaders are also contributing towards this. God bless Kenya, and please pray for Embakasi East,” Babu Owino tweeted.

The Embakasi East MP expressed his commitment to supporting the victims and revealed that other leaders affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja coalition party are also actively contributing to the cause.

The tragedy has sparked a nationwide outcry, with many questioning the safety measures surrounding the licensing of the gas plant within a residential area.

President William Ruto has responded swiftly, ordering the immediate arrest and prosecution of all officials involved in issuing the licenses to the gas plant.

The additional 1 million Kenyan Shillings donated by Babu Owino, combined with Raila Odinga’s initial contribution, brings the total relief fund to 2 million shillings.

The funds are expected to provide much-needed assistance to the affected families and aid in their recovery from this devastating incident.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has blamed National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula for the mishap that saw Azimio MPs skip Parliament on Wednesday evening during the voting of the proposed Finance Bill, 2023.

The lawmaker in a video posted on his official social media handles says the original plan from the Parliamentary leadership was for the voting process to take place next week after the third reading, only for speaker Wetang’ula to change tune moments after a section of Azimio MPs had left.

The controversial lawmaker read malice in the situation, pointing out that several MPs from the Azimio la Umoja coalition missed out on the voting process because of the initial directive.

Babu Owino said he missed the voting since he had arranged to meet his lawyer to prepare for his defence hearing at Milimani Law Courts slated for Thursday, June 15, following Wetang’ula’s earlier communication.

He says he had already consulted with Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi whom he disclosed that he had to prepare for his court case.

“I was not present today (Wednesday) in Parliament because my case has been scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) in court for defense hearing and I was with my lawyer,” he said.

Out of 257 MPs present at the August House, 176 voted for the bill while 81 legislators voted against it during the second reading. The Bill now moves to the Third and final reading where legislators get a chance to amend certain clauses within the Bill.

The Finance Bill, 2023, was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, June 13, by the National Assembly’s Finance and National Planning Committee.

The committee, chaired by Molo MP Kuria Kimani, advocated for certain amendments in the Bill to cater to the concerns raised by the public.

This involved reduction of the Housing Fund tax from three percent to 1.5 percent. Further, the proposed digital tax was revised to five percent from the initial 16 percent.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had suspended tallying of votes in Kiambaa after a fracas broke out at Karuri Secondary School in the morning of Friday, July 16 when Jubilee candidate Kariri Njama claimed the by-election was being rigged in favour of UDA’s John Njuguna.

In a video circulating online, Kariri is seen protesting the results which placed Njuguna in the lead with 21,606 votes.

Kariri on the other hand had 21,151 votes after votes from 153 polling stations out of 154 had been tallied.

But taking to his official Twitter account this morning, Babu Owino advised the ruling Jubilee party to rig the remaining polling stations so as to spare President Uhuru Kenyatta from embarrassment.

According to the controversial lawmaker, Jubilee has all it needs to win the concluded by-election in Kiambaa. Babu Owino said Jubilee has the police, IEBC and NYS, which should aid them in rigging.

“I urge the Jubilee government to rig in the remaining 2 polling stations at Kiambaa Constituency.Stop embarrassing President Uhuru. You have the police(Rungus and Teargas),IEBC and you also have NYS.Rig rig rig,” tweeted Babu Owino.

Babu Owino’s post sparked mixed reactions from netizens, with some telling him off for publicly advocating for rigging.

Some said that Babu Owino was inciting the public to cause violence should the rigging happen as he wishes.

“And if that happens, will violence not ERUPT? this is basically incitement to violence,” one of the users posted.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is now threatening to sue Nation Media Group over a story on Felix Orinda, polularly known as DJ Evolve.

The controversial lawmaker, who he is accused of shooting the entertainer on the neck while raveling at B Club in Nairobi’s Kilimani area in January, denied the charges preferred against him at a Milimani court and was granted Sh10 million bail.

He later appealed, and the cash bail was reviewed to Sh 5 million after being charged with attempted murder and behaving in a disorderly manner.

NTV on Monday reported that DJ Evolve, who was recently discharged from Nairobi hospital, is still bedridden and cannot do anything by himself.

The video showed the DJ has not fully regained his voice and is struggling to talk.

But through his lawyers, Okatch and Partners Advocates, Babu asked the media for a public apology within two days.

He wants the media house to admit liability for ‘slanderous and libelous statements’ or he will sue.

In his demand letter, Babu claims that the piece aired on TV was aimed at pitting him against the public.

“That your story on the plight of Orinda though noble as it shows his improved state, has been used by yourselves to attack, accuse, persecute. reprimand, convict our client in the eyes of the public. The sole intention was indeed to whip up emotions, and incite the public against our client, ” the letter dated July 1 read.

Babu said the story infringes his constitutional rights to a fair hearing.

“That we have carefully listened to and watched the said story over and over and indeed at no point has the said Felix Orinda stated that he was shot by our client, ” he said.

“In fact, even before your news item, Orinda has never ever stated in any forum whatsoever that he was shot by our client. The Directorate of Public prosecutions has further confirmed that in fact Orinda has never recorded a statement on the matter.”

Babu said that the ‘slanderous, libelous defamatory remarks’ have made him suffer considerable mental anguish and embarrassment.

According to the DPP Noordin Haji, the case has been slowed down by the inability of the victim to record a statement following the shooting which affected his speech.

The DPP through a statement issued on June 30 said that Investigation report shows that the victim is paralyzed and has a speech impediment making it very challenging to record his statement.

The MP was arraigned in court on January 1, 2020 and was charged with attempted murder and behaving in a disorderly manner.

Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji has been forced to break his silence on an attempted murder case involving Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino.

The controversial lawmaker early this year shot Felix Orinda alias DJ Evolve on the neck while reveling at B Club in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

Babu Owino was arrested, but was later released on bond after denying attempted murder charges.

On Monday June 29, 2020, NTV ran an exclusive story where DJ Evolve spoke for the first time on his life after the shooting.

The DJ, who is currently under home care after being discharged from Nairobi hospital, with a cumulative bill of Ksh 17 million, narrated how he is currently struggling to live along with his condition.

Barely inaudible, Orinda told NTV that he has improved since the January incident but explained the shooting incident left him immobile and traumatized.

This caused an uproar on the internet, with netizens calling for justice for him. DPP Haji, who has been forced to address the matter, issued a comprehensive statement explaining why Babu Owino’s prosecution has taken long.

According to the DPP, the case has been slowed down by the inability of the victim to record a statement following the shooting which affected his speech.

According to the IO report, the victim is paralyzed and has a speech impediment making it very challenging to record his statement.

The MP was arraigned in court on 20/1/2020 charged with attempted murder & behaving in a disorderly manner.

Babu Owino however, denied the charge and was released on Kshs.10 million bond with two sureties of same amount and in the alternative, cash bail of Kshs.5 million.

DPP Haji further notes that the matter was scheduled for mention on 20/3/2020 but was affected by the Covid-19 directions issued by the NCAJ on 16/3/2020 scaling down court operations.

At the same time, Orinda’s family says they are yet to hear from the Embakasi MP despite reports on local tabloids that the MP had reached out to the family for an-out-of-court settlement.

Babu Owino is said to have drawn his gun and allegedly shot DJ Evolve, who was reportedly unarmed. The incident is said to have occurred at the popular B Club in Kilimani estate, Nairobi.

Police say the lawmaker argued with the DJ,  before he drew his gun and shot him on the neck.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was on Sunday night clashed with a journalist on live TV.

Appearing in an interview with K24 TV’s Anne Kiguta on Punchline show, the two engaged in a heated interview after Kiguta started asking Babu Owino controversial questions.

Kiguta asked the controversial lawmaker that some parents had said he was a monster who shot someone pointblank and these tutorials are meant to hoodwink Kenyans, but Bbu Owino responded by saying that maybe just 1% of those who have responded say so.

The interview escalated after K24 replayed CCTV footage of the night Babu shot DJ Evolve at point blank at a city club.

After the CCTV footage was played, the visibly irritated MP declined to answer all questions touching on Dj Evolve saying the matter was in court and amounted to sub judice.

The interview had been scheduled to run for twenty five minutes ended up becoming a circus for at least 13 minutes as Babu constantly gave the same answer to Kiguta’s persistent questions on the shooting of DJ Evolve.

While Babu had in the past claimed that he had paid Dj Evolve’s bill, he declined to respond to the victim;s father who indidated that the family was still overwhelmed by their son’s medical bill.

After more than ten minutes of back and forth, Babu accused Kiguta of working for the DPP to trap him into making comments that would go beyond the terms of his bail.

“I think you were sent by the DPP to ask me these questions so that they can get an excuse for arresting me,” Babu said before the interview ended.

Interestingly, a video of the interview has since been pulled down by Youtube for allegedly breaching the terms of service.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has blasted Education Permanent Secretary Belio Kipsang for banning online lessons as students continue staying at home due to Covid-19.

The controversial lawmaker has been offering online revision lessons for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates, through his Facebook page, which he kicked off last Friday.

Today (Friday May 8), Babu Owino was set to take the candidates through Chemistry revision, after successfully teaching mathematics last week.

The Education PS however, fired a warning to Babu Owino that he is committing a crime by conducting online revision classes with this year’s KCSE candidates.

Speaking at Parliament on Thursday 7, the PS stated anyone offering to teach students without being qualified is committing an offense.

He went on to add that the same applies to anyone circulating e-learning information that is not approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

In his response, Babu has vowed to continue helping the students with their revision. He claimed that the PS is basking in the glory of his ignorance by banning his online revision classes.

“The Principal Secretary Education Belio Kipsang is BUSKING IN THE GLORY OF HIS IGNORANCE by banning our lesson. We will PROCEED with our KCSE CHEMISTRY REVISION tomorrow at 2pm.Stay tuned on my Facebook,” he posted.

According to Babu Owino, he decided to take up the role of a teacher to help the candidates who have been at home for weeks now after the government closed all schools due to the Coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Magistrate that granted Embakasi East MP Babu Owino controversial bail terms has quit the lawmaker’s attempted murder case.

Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi has decided to withdraw himself from the case as state seeks to have the bail terms reviewed.

His withdrawal comes after eyebrows were raised following the bail terms that were granted to the youthful MP at the time of his release.

The Director of Public Prosecutions had faulted bail terms issued by a magistrate’s court in freeing the youthful lawmaker.

DPP Noordin Haji said he was taken aback by the court’s decision to release the legislator on what he termed as “free bond” and now wants the High Court to call the file from the trial magistrate, with a view of examining the circumstances, legality, and propriety of the orders issued on January 27.

The MP who is charged with attempting to murder Felix Odhiambo Orinda (DJ Evolve) was released on a Sh10 million cash bail to be paid in installments and channeled towards the victim’s hospital bill.

Magistrate Francis Andayi had ruled that the MP shall meet the initial medical expenses of the victim and to this end up to the value of Sh10 million, an amount he said was equivalent to the value of cash bail the court had set for him.

On the other hand, Babu had also filed an application seeking a review of his bail terms on the grounds that he would struggle to pay the remaining installments despite having complied with the court order.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is finally free.

On Monday evening, the court ruled that the embattled MP should post a Ksh10 bond, which will be used to pay for the treatment of DJ Evolve, the man he was arrested for shooting in the neck during a night club altercation.

He was ordered to pay the hefty amount in four installments, with the first payment sufficing to guarantee his release.

He has also been restricted from taking alcohol or any narcotic drug.

The family of the victim, Felix Odhiambo Orinda, had opposed Babu’s release on bond in a court session that was not without drama.

The case had earlier taken a dramatic twist in court after one of the Babu’s supporters was arrested for shouting at a lawyer from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office as the pre-bail hearing was ongoing.

Babu is represented by lawyers Dunstan Omari, Cliff Ombeta and five others.

Omari had pleaded with the court to release the Embakasi East MP so that we could proceed with his parliamentary duties to avoid losing his seat.

Babu had, on January 20, denied two counts – an unlawful attempt to cause the death of the Nairobi DJ and carrying a firearm while drunk and disorderly – following a gun drama at Nairobi’s B-Club on January 17.

The embattled lawmaker is accused of unlawfully attempting to end the life of Orinda after shooting him in the neck.

The offence commonly referred to as accessory after the fact to murder attracts life imprisonment.

“Any person who becomes an accessory after the fact to murder is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life,” Section 222 of the Penal Code reads.

Owino also faced a second charge arising from his disorderly conduct while armed, the prosecution telling the court the legislator violated Sections 33 and 31 (1) of the Firearms Act.

The Act (Section 33) prescribes imprisonment for a term not exceeding a year, a fine not exceeding Sh10,000 or both for any person found guilty of carrying a firearm while drunk or disorderly.

CCTV footage from the club showed Babu shooting the DJ, while smoking shisha, and surrounded by his friends – including a lady who was seated just next to him.

The DJ is still admitted to Nairobi Hospital having undergone surgeries to remove a bullet that was lodged in his neck.

Owino had failed to appear in court on Thursday, January 23, in a case he is charged with uttering abusive words against President Uhuru Kenyatta because he was reportedly unwell and had been suffering from chest pains.

Babu Owino will be in the custody of the prison authorities until Monday when the court will decide whether he should be granted bail.

The state on Monday through the DPP opposed his bail application, arguing that he had continued interfering in the case by contacting the victim who is being treated at the Nairobi Hospital.

He was arrested on Friday and taken into custody at Kilimani police station after the shooting incident was reported by a security official at B club in Kilimani, Nairobi.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been making headlines out of controversies, some of which have been embraced by his supporters.

Just recently, the youthful MP was in trouble with Kenyans and a section of leaders after telling Kandara MP Alice Wahome to respect President Uhuru Kenyatta and AU envoy Raila Odinga failure to which she would have every part of her body shaven.

However, the latest remark made by the controversial MP on ODM leader Raila Odinga seems to have gotten Kenyans on the wrong side.

Babu Owino on Thursday evening declared that “This time Raila will be the President by ballot or bullet”.

While the former Prime Minister has said it is too early to discuss the 2022 race, politicians and pundits say he would be the right candidate to face off with Deputy President William Ruto, the likely candidate of the ruling Jubilee Party.

However, he remains the man to watch ahead of the 2022 elections, with opinion divided on whether or not he should contest the presidency.

Following his remarks, many faulted him for inciting violence advising that Raila is among the despots in Kenya that will fall.

A number preferred to stand with self declared revolutionist lawyer Miguna Miguna over Babu’s choice for president.

Here are some of the reactions on Babu Owino’s remarks.
