Cate Waruguru with Ruto

Laikipia County Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru has broken her silence on claims that she has joined Deputy President William Ruto’s camp.

Reports had circulated on social media that the controversial lawmaker had ditched the ruling Jubilee party to join DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

While addressing the media on Wednesday July 14, Waruguru claimed that the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party is in limbo.

According to her, much needs to be done to restore the public confidence in the ruling party.

“There has been a massive exodus from the Jubilee Party and I have seen speculations from the members of the public asking whether Waruguru has moved to the ‘wheelbarrow’ side. My answer to their speculations is relative, every serious politician, you listen to your electorates. I am on my own. My bosses are the voters and the people of Laikipia,” Waruguru said.

She further noted that she will be making an announcement very soon telling the country of her decision.

The MP added that the people will be the ones to decide as to which side they would like to vote in terms of the parties.

Deputy President Dr William Ruto has now been left with only one foot soldier in Laikipia County.

The decamping of Laikipia woman representative Kate Waruguru and Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere from DP Ruto’s Tanga tanga camp to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s camp has left the second in command with only one foot soldier in the vast county inhabited largely by the Kikuyu and Maasai communities, the youthful area senator John Kinyua.

Waruguru was the first to abandon Ruto when she met Raila at his Capitol Hills offices and a day later she was followed by Korere, also elected on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Their defection leaves Kinyua as the only diehard supporter of the DP as the other two legislators, Amin Mohamed of Laikipia East and Mariru Kariuki of Laikipia West, both elected on Jubilee ticket, are said to lean on the president’s side.

Kinyua’s loyalty to Ruto saw him lose his post as the chair of the Senate Devolution Committee in the changes that were announced by the chief whip and Murang’a senator Irungu Kang’ata.

In the changes meant to clip the wings of Ruto’s allies in the senate, Kinyua was moved to the less influential ICT Committee to replace West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio who was named the Senate Majority Leader to replace Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen, also stripped of his majority leader’s docket.

Kinyua was also among the seven senators who defended then deputy speaker Kithure Kindiki from impeachment. He joined Murkomen, Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho), Christopher Langat (Bomet), Susan Kihika (Nakuru) and Samson Cherargey (Nandi) in defending Kindiki (Tharaka Nithi) against claims of being disloyal to the head of state.

Early this year, Kinyua affirmed his support for Ruto when he joined Laikipia leaders in endorsing former Agriculture Cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri as the next Mt Kenya kingpin and suggested he be the DP’s running mate in the 2022 presidential election.

The senator had teamed up with county assembly speaker Patrick Waigwa in rooting for Kiunjuri saying he has what it takes to be the next number two to safeguard the political interests of the vast region with over six million voters.

But days later Kiunjuri was sacked as cabinet secretary by Uhuru Kenyatta, sending him into political oblivion. Warunguru was in the news when she led her supporters in storming AIPCA Nanyuki as Jubilee nominated MP Maina Kamanda was addressing the congregation.

Presiding Bishop Ndirangu Ngunjiri was forced to order Waruguru out as she had not been invited. She had arrived accompanied by over 200 drunken supporters. She is also on record vowing to vie for the Laikipia governor’s seat in 2022 to unseat Ndiritu Muriithi.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has hit back at the National Assembly Majority whip Emmanuel Wangwe, hours after being kicked out of the lucrative house committee.

The controversial lawmaker has accused the Navakholo MP of lacking knowledge about his role in the parliament. Kuria in a Facebook post on Wednesday night advised Wangwe to seek advice from his predecessor, the Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali.

While referring to Wangwe as a buffoon, Kuria told him that Member Services Committee is not a Departmental Committee. He went further to argue that the Majority whip job is above MP Wangwe’s pay grade and qualifications.

According to Moses Kuria, the highest certificate Wangwe holds is a Driving Licence.

Moses Kuria had earlier on accused Wangwe of ignorance, saying that he had been notified of intention to be discharged from the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) of which he was not a member and then Wangwe proceeded to discharge him from the Transport Committee.

Kuria and Laikipia Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru are among four Jubilee Party legislators who have been expelled from National Assembly committees.

Others are Aldai MP Cornelly Serem and Bomet Woam Rep Joyce Korir.

Waruguru last week met with ODM leader Raila Odinga in what was said to be a move to save her from the ouster.

Waruguru met the African Union Special Envoy for Infrastructure last Tuesday before Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere visited the ODM leader the following day.

The outspoken MP, who was a staunch supporter of deputy president William Ruto, said she had resorted to work with the government. Ms Waruguru said she met the Orange Democratic Movement leader to discuss pertinent issues of national importance.

In his communication to speaker Justin Muturi, Wangwe noted that the four have been relieved of their duties.

Last week, Kuria accepted his removal as Vice Chairperson of the Transport, Infrastructure, Public Works and Housing Committee.

In his statement, the vocal lawmaker thanked the party for allowing him to serve in the aforementioned capacity. He did however, note that he had no regrets in discharging his duties.

Laikipia Woman Rep Catherine Waruguru has been kicked out of parliamentary committee.

Others expelled are Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, Cornelly Serem and Joyce Korir.

Majority Chief Whip Emmanuel Wangwe, in letters dated June 17, informed the MPs of their expulsion.

Waruguru had met ODM leader Raila Odinga last week in what was seen as a bid to save her post, but it seems it was a case of too little too late.

The meeting, which was also attended by National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed, elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans, especially from Laikipia.

The first time MP, commonly known as ‘Mama Simba’ however said she welcomed criticisms and support in equal measure.

She supports the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) that is championed by President Kenyatta and Mr Odinga. The lawmaker has been one of Dr Ruto’s allies who are being kicked out of critical House leadership positions.

She was serving as as vice chairperson of the National Assembly’s Members Services and Facilities Committee and has been also a member of the departmental committee on lands.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen on Sunday June 14, 2020 tore into Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga moments after he denied holding any meeting with impeached Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru.

Raila on Sunday afternoon issued a statement distancing himself from the said meeting with Waiguru.

Raila in the statement noted that there does not exist any senate committee to investigate Waiguru’s impeachment and whose members from ODM he has instructed to save Waiguru as reported by the local daily.

Raila says that at the said hours of the meeting, he had a meeting with Laikipia women Representative Catherine Waruguru who was in the company of some Members of Parliament.

He says that their meeting had nothing to do with governor Waiguru’s tribulations.

Daily Nation Newspaper had on Sunday June 14 reported that Waiguru and Raila met on Thursday evening in efforts to help save her job, which is hanging by a thread after she was impeached by the county assembly last week and failed in her bid to block the move in court.

The local daily reported that Raila met Waiguru at an exclusive club in Karen, Nairobi, alongside a few aides, with the key agenda being whipping ODM and other “friendly” senators to defeat the motion against her.

It was further reported that Waiguru walked in a few minutes to 7pm accompanied by two aides. Then Kiambu Governor James Nyoro and his Nyeri counterpart Mutahi Kahiga joined her before Mr Odinga and a few of his trusted MPs arrived.

But Murkomen while hitting out at Raila says that the former Prime Minister’s denial can only be taken seriously on Tuesday once Kenyans see the instructions has has allegedly given to Senate Minority leader James Orengo and Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo junior.

Murkomen says that Raila’s denial at the moment should be treated as a decoy.

Just a day after Laikipia Women Representative Cate Waruguru dumped Deputy President William Ruto’s Tanga Tanga faction for ODM party leader Raila Odinga, another member of the political camp has defected.

Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere, who has been a champion of Tanga tanga’s Inua Mama campaign on Tuesday paid allegiance to the Uhuru-Raila unity campaign.

Raila through his official twitter account revealed that he had received MP Korore, who expressed commitment to support the national programs aimed at uniting the nation.

At the same time, Raila revealed that he had also held talks with Coast region politicians Gideon Mung’aro and Suleiman Shahbal on range of issues touching on the development of the Coast.

“Received Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere who expressed commitment to support the national programs aimed at uniting our nation. I also held talks with Coast politicians @Hon_Mungaro and @SuleimanShahbal on a range of issues touching on the development of the Coast,” Raila tweeted.

Korere has been a staunch supporter of Ruto’s 2022 p[residential campaign and one of the founder members of the Inua Mama Group – a women lobby group that supports the DP.

The two Laikipia MPs, Waruguru and Korere, abandoned the DP just days after nominated MP Millicent Omanga, also a founding member of the Inua Mama Group, defected from Tanga Tanga.
