Cleophas Malala

Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has torn into Kakaemega senator Cleophas Malala over a Luhya meeting that is scheduled for December 31, 2021 at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega town.

Malala while addressing Kakamega residents on Sunday December 26, 2021 said that the meeting that has been planned by Atwoli is fake, and that it has been called off.

According to Malala, Atwoli must seek permission from Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi before holding a Luhyia meeting.

The vocal lawmaker went ahead to claim that Atwoli wants to use the meeting to force the Luhya community to endorse ODM leader Raila Odinga for 2022 presidency.

Malala argued that Kakamega is his political bedroom, and that there is no any meeting that was going to happen without him being consulted.

According to him, a meeting meant to endorse Raila should be held in one of his political backyards, either in Siaya or Kisumu.

“It is now official. The fake Luhya meeting slated for the 31st Dec at Bukhungu Stadium is hereby nullified, ” Malala posted on Twitter.

However, Atwoli while responding to the claims told off Malala, saying that he was too junior.

Atwoli argued that Malala has no capacity to speak on behalf of the Luhya community, and has no any ability to call off such meetings.

The flamboyant trade unionist went ahead to clarify that the Bukhungu meeting is still on, and that it will bring together all progressive leaders and locals from all the five Western Kenya region counties.

“You are a junior Senator who has neither the capacity to speak on behalf of the Luhya community nor the ability to call on and off such a meeting. The Bukhungu II meeting brings together ALL progressive leaders and locals from the 5 counties in the region,” Atwoli tweeted.

On Sunday December 26, 2021, Atwoli hosted the Orange party leader at his Khwisero home. Raila accepted the invite to attend the Bukhungu meeting.

From Atwoli’s home, Raila toured Busia County where he held meetings in Budalangi.

Raila declared his interest in the 2022 presidential race on Friday November 10, 2021 during the Azimio La Umoja Convention that was held at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Deputy President William Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi, Mukhisa Kituyi and National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi are some of the leaders interested in succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala has threatened to dump the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) should the coalition associate itself with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The vocal lawmaker told off the former Premier to cease from deceiving other leaders for his own benefits.

Speaking while addressing locals in Bungoma town during the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) people’s tour of the the Western region on Friday November 26, 2021, Malala urged other leaders to refuse the mind games played by Raila.

The first time senator noted that Raila’s political game ends up benefitting him and his people alone.

Malala’s rant comes days after Raila attended the Wiper party’s National Delegates Convention (NDC) at the Kasarani Gymnasium where Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka was endorsed as the party’s flag bearer in the coming 2022 general elections.

Malala noted that in 2017, Western Kenya leaders united to support NASA whose flag bearer was Raila, who then went into a political marriage with President Kenyatta through the famous March 2018 handshake without consulting his co-principals.

The lawmaker argued that Raila was given Kshs. 250 billion to build up his supporters, but he instead went ahead to use the money for his own benefit.

“I want Wetangula, Mudavadi and Kalonzo to learn a lesson from Raila after he went into agreement with President Kenyatta he forgot about NASA issues,” he said.

According to Malala, Raila used the alleged funds to build his Kisumu region, neglecting the western region.

He warned that OKA supporters would defect to other alliances should the coalition bring the Orange party on board.

“If you are going to unite independently as One Kenya Alliance (OKA) we are going to support you but if you are going to include ODM then we promise to decamp,” he said.

In presence was the Bungoma senator Moses Masika Wetangula who noted that people should have faith in One Kenya Alliance for it is the one going to form the next government in 2022.

Wetang’ula further noted that OKA will not betray Kenyans but instead bring equity, employment and change
among Kenyans.

Also present during the OKA tour of the Bungoma County was ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, his KANU counterpart Gideon Moi, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka and former Presidential aspirant Cyrus Jirongo.

Deputy President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga will jail each other after the 2022 electioneering period, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has claimed.

Malala who was speaking on Wednesday September 15, 2021 during an interview on a local radio station stated that whoever will become the fifth president between Raila and DP Ruto, will jail the other.

He argues that Raila will send Ruto to prison immediately after clinching power, and Ruto will do the same to Raila should he also succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This, according to Malala, is because the two leaders have deep-rooted enmity and bitterness that if either of them gets the top seat, they will seek to punish the other.

Malala who is rooting for a Musalia Mudavadi presidency argues that should Raila win the 2022 general election, half of the country will gladly welcome that win while the other half will frown over it.

As a result, he argued, the country will remain divided. The same outcome would be expected if Ruto becomes the next president.

The ANC lawmaker argues that for the country to avoid the looming division that will be brought about by Raila and Ruto, a neutral leader must be given a chance.

In his appeal to ODM leader and Ruto, he urged them to compromise their candidacy for the sake of the country, arguing that the nation needs healing from all manners of political intolerance.

He says that Kenyans should elect a leader who will not hold any grudge against another leader.

Malala insisted that the anger and bitterness that exists between DP Ruto and the former Prime Minister is beyond just politics, therefore, risks hurting the entire nation.

Raila who has not yet declared his 2022 presidential candidature is on the record saying that he will send all the thieves to prison should he become the next president.

Ruto on the other hand has been accusing Raila of causing Jubilee government’s failure to deliver on its promises to Kenyans.

The second in command has been accusing Raila of killing Jubilee party through his handshake with President Kenyatta.

Ruto has hence abandoned Jubilee and is now focusing on popularizing United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which he will use as his vehicle to presidency in 2022.

Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen has exposed an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) senator from the Coastal Counties who has allegedly been offered Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala’s position in the senate so that he can vote against his county.

The former Senate Majority leader’s accusations came shortly after former State House employee Dennis Itumbi saying that a source had intimated to him about the Orange party’s plans.

Itumbi had asked Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo junior, his Narok counterpart Ledama Olekina and Murkomen to confirm the claims.

Responding to the question, Murkomen claimed that it was Taita Taveta senator Johnes Mwaruma who had been offered senator Malala’s position in the senate so that he can vote against his county.

Senator Malala is the current senate Deputy Minority leader, a position ODM is allegedly planning to take away and give it to senator Mwaruma.

Murkomen asked the Taita Taveta lawmaker not to his beloved County for 30 pieces of silver.

The Senate leadership met President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday morning ahead of the crucial debate on the revenue sharing formula, with Malala missing the meeting.

Majority leader Samuel Poghisio, his deputy Fatuma Dullo, Majority Whip Irungu Kangata and his deputy Farhiya Haji, Minority leader James Orengo, Minority Whip Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and his deputy Beatrice Kwamboka were all in attendance at State House.

ODM leader Raila Odinga also attended the meeting.

Speaker Ken Lusaka did not attend the meeting as he was reportedly chairing a session of the powerful House Business Committee to chart ways on how to deal with the debate this afternoon.

The Senate will be trying for the 10th time to reach a consensus on the contentious county revenue sharing formula.

President Kenyatta during the State House meeting, pledged to raise next year’s counties budget by Sh50 billion, the latest of inducements seeking to unlock the stalemate on the revenue sharing formula.

The allocation of the additional funds will, however, be dependent on the financial performance of the economy.

Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen has exposed details of deal three senators entered with government that has now put their lives in danger.

Taking to his official twitter account on Monday night, the former senate majority leader claimed that Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala’s life is in danger because he owes the state.

Murkomen claimed that President Uhuru Kenyatta-led government in collaboration with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga had paid the three senators to vote in favor of the government’s proposed revenue sharing formula.

However, according to Murkomen, the three lawmakers, that is senator Malala, his Samburu counterpart Steve Ltumbesi Lelegwe and Bomet’s Christopher Andrew Lang’at ate received the money in their accounts.

Murkomen went ahead to claim that the three lawmakers ate the money and failed to vote in favor of President Kenyatta’s formula, which led to their arrest.

He argued that the lawmakers owe the state and that is why their lives are in danger.

Murkomen however, wants the government to stop bribing senators, and let them exercise their constitutional mandate.

“According to Mtu Fulani and @RailaOdinga Govt paid Senators to vote for their formulae. Apparently Malala,Lang’at and Lelegwe ate the money but didn’t vote with govt side.We are told Malala’s life is in danger because he owes the State. Why in the first place is govt bribing Senators?” Murkomen tweeted.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Monday September 7, 2020 held a meeting with Kakamega County senator Cleophas Malala at his Capitol Hill office in Nairobi.

Taking to his official twitter account after the meeting, the former prime minister revealed that their meeting focused on the revenue stalemate at the senate.

Raila also revealed that they held discussions revolving around the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

“Held discussions with Senator Cleophas Malala of Kakamega this afternoon focusing on the Revenue Sharing stalemate and BBI,” Raila tweeted.

Over the weekend, Raila hit out at the  Kakamega Senator after he rejected the third-generation county revenue allocation formula.

The former Prime Minister held a meeting with a section of ODM officials from Kakamega County at the county Governor Wycliffe Oparanya home.

The delegation had spent the night at Oparanya’s residence having arrived there on Saturday, September 5.

Raila questioned whether Senator Malala was elected to represent the people of Kakamega after rejecting the revenue sharing formula.

The party leader argued that when one is elected, they are supposed to represent their people, saying that the senator said he doesn’t want to deny funds to people from other counties whom he is not representing but only the people of Kakamega.

He added that Malala rejects the formula that will have his county getting more funds and noted that it’s not that he loves people from other counties but his own selfish interest.

Raila further called on the Senate to come up with a lasting solution to solve the altercation that he said is now affecting all counties.

Senator Malala had vowed to reject the formula at all costs after he was arrested on Monday, August 17, together with his colleagues Christopher Langat (Bomet) and Steve Lelegwen (Samburu)

Malala said the arrest was a state intimidation over their stand on the controversy surrounding the Counties’ revenue formula.

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala and his Meru counterpart Mithika Linturi are among the senators who woke up to frozen bank accounts.

Kericho senator Aaron Cheruiyot on Thursday August 13, 2020 had claimed that a number of senators who voted in support of Senator Linturi’s amendment to the revenue formula report had woken up to frozen bank accounts and fictitious tax demands from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Linturi had moved an amendment to Nairobi counterpart Johnson Sakaja’s proposal on the disputed formula fronted by the House Finance committee which a section of Senators argued that was not favourable to “poor” counties.

He proposed a reduction to the baseline (equal share) from Ksh316.5 billion as proposed by Sakaja to Ksh270 billion.

Malala in an interview with the Star confirmed that indeed his accounts had been frozen but he had chosen to remain silent instead.

“Yes (my accounts have been frozen), but I have decided to remain silent on the matter though I remain firm on my decision to save Kenya,” he was quoted by the local daily.

On Tuesday, the Senate failed for a record eight-time to agree on how the Ksh316 billion from the national government should be distributed in counties.

The senators are set to reconvene today to debate on other proposals fronted by Senators Petronilla Were (nominated), Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu) and James Orengo (Siaya).

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala is under fire after he claimed that Kirinyaga residents have no business to dictate how the senate should determine governor Anne Waiguru’s impeachment motion.

Malala who was speaking during a motion to determine whether Waiguru’s case should be heard by a committee or the whole senate.

He said that the senate cannot be controlled by a group of people sitting in a certain corner of the country deciding on how senators should conduct their business.

“The Senate is an independent organ, people of Kirinyaga County cannot therefore dictate how we transact,”he said.

Malala was referring to the recent demonstrations that have been witnessed in Kirinyaga, with the residents crying to the senate to hear the case as a plenary.

The residents went ahead to even call on President Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga to help them get justice.

However, Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen told off senator Malala, arguing that their powers belong to the people of the republic of Kenya.

Murkomen said that Malala was out of order to say that people of Kirinyaga should not decide on how the senate should transact its business.

Kenyans on Twitter however, put Malala under fire, blasting him for making such a statement.

Some argued that it was a disgrace of national magnitude if a whole senator can talk like that.

Here are some of the reactions from Kenyans on Twitter.

Former Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa is a man who qualifies to be called a friend of the cells.

His recent arrest on allegations of attempting to defraud foreign investors 40 billion shillings in an arms deal is the biggest scam and dent to his political career.

However, Echesa’s arrest could be a big blow to Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala’s candidature according to political analysts.

The two former political enemies reconciled late last year publicly in Mumias town and Echesa promised to stand by Cleophas Malala in his 2022 gubernatorial candidature in Kakamega County and in return senator Malala offered to give Rashid Echesa extra evening tuition so as to be able to get a degree by 2022.

The hotly contested Kakamega gubernatorial race comes after the exit of governor Wycliffe Oparanya who also doubles up as the chair of council of governors serving his second term in office.

But could Echesa and Malala’s new found political friendship be a friendship of doom?

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi says if Malala is to win the Kakamega gubernatorial race then he has no option other than distancing himself from Rashid Echesa whose political career has been soiled by the sh. 40 billion arms deal scandal in the office of the deputy president.

The Kakamega gubernatorial race has attracted several candidates including former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale and Lugari MP Ayub Savula.

Contrary to what many believe, Kakamega County Senator Cleophas Malala will have a rough time to ascend to power in 2022 as the governor of the second largest county in kenya, Kakamega.

Daily trends did an in-depth analysis on his 2022 gubernatorial candidature and here the findings:-

  1. Non Luhya- senator Malala ancestral background does not trace him to Luhya land. His roots are in Luo land Siaya County to be specific. Malala, the shackles of doom drama teacher is said to have found himself in western after his father buying land in Butere constituency after being ex communicated in Siaya County which borders butere. Malala does not know how to speak Luhya to date apart from the word “’Mulembe”’ which means greetings.
  2. Unlike his political competitors, Malala does not have a solid voter base region. In Kakamega County there are three voter base regions and for one to ascend to power they must have a stronghold voter base support. These voter base regions are the Wanga region, the Isukha region and the Kabras region. The current governor Wycliffe Oparanya controls the Wanga region while Isukha region is controlled by the former Kakamega senator bony khalwale who is also a candidate in the 2022 gubernatorial elections.  I the Wanga region where Malala resides, there are several candidates who are natives of the region and the strongest among will automatically be endorsed by the wanga elders.
  3. Poor relationship with Oparanya: Powers close to the governor informed daily trends that Oparanya and Malala do not see eye to eye. Let it be remembered that Oparanya is also the deputy party leader for ODM and a close confidant of Raila Odinga. To get party tickets of ODM in western is impossible if one doesn’t have a good rapport with Oparanya. It goes without saying that Malala will not be given the ODM party ticket in 2022.
  4. Poor relationship with ANC and other Luhya leaders- Malala is on record not once not twice for disrespecting the ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi amongst other luhya leaders in western province. Currently ANC is the political party that sponsored malala to senate and with his indiscipline case he is more likely to be denied the party ticket come 2022. Actually ANC will not give him the party ticket as indicated by the ANC national youth league chair Nathaniel Akadima in a presser given to the media late last year.
  5. Fall out with Atwoli-Malala who was initially known as Atwoli’s last born child, having been brought to the county politics by Atwoli has been abandoned by his political godfather and Secretary General Central organization of trade unions Francis Atwoli. This is after Malala embezzled over 3 million shillings given to him by Atwoli to organize the BBI rally in kakamega and he ended hiring low end public address systems that resulted to sound problems at the rally. Something that annoyed Mzee Francis Atwoli and made him keep silent on malala. Sources close to Atwoli indicate that Atwoli is in the process of looking for another favorite candidate that he will name in his list of 2022 preferred candidates as indicated in the Bukhugu BBI rally.
  6. Sexual harassment of his communication team- Margret Nechesa popularly known as “sasha” who is a camera lady at the Malala communications team has on several occasions come out in public on sexual harassment from the senator. She says the senator wants sex every time and anywhere every time they are on official duty. Failure to this she is threatened to be fired.
  7. Financial constraints- Malala being a first timer in senate, he has not accumulated enough wealth to run a gubernatorial campaign of the second most populated county in Kenya. This has been seen in his craftiness behavior whenever he is trusted with money by people. This has been seen by the way he has handled the Malala Cup donor funds and the BBI money amongst others.

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala is a lonely man after being put on blackout by the Central Organization Trade union (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

Sources close to Atwoli disclose that Malala was tasked the duty of organizing the Bukhungu BBI rally given over Ksh. 3 million by Atwoli to organize the BBI meeting at Bukhungu stadium.

He ended up using less than half a million on the organization of the Rally. This then led to the use of low quality public address system- something that did not go well with Atwoli.

Malala is believed to have been brought to the Kakamega senatorial race by Francis Atwoli who not only endorsed him but funded his campaign.

Malala being given a cold shoulder by Atwoli will prove difficult for him to ascend to the governor position in 2022 after the exit of ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya considering that Atwoli is a respected elder of the Luhya community and majority of the residents of the county listen to him.

Malala is not a new face to the media limelight as in November 2019 he was expelled from the ANC party on grounds of indiscipline and disloyalty.

Malala is an expected gubernatorial candidate for the Kakamega governorship in 2022 and the silence from Atwoli is a threat to his political career.

Tough-talking Kakamega County Senator Cleophas Malala has dared Musalia Mudavadi-led Amani National Congress Party to expel him.

Malala who was speaking at a press conference in Kakamega town on Saturday said that he was not apologetic for campaigning for ODM candidate Bernard Imran Okoth in the November 7 Kibra by-election.

Malala said he would rather face a by-election than apologise to party leader Musalia Mudavadi.

During ODM’s campaigns for Kibra candidate Imran Okoth, Mr Malala said he attended a rally on November 27 as ANC’s “highest-placed leader”.

He claimed that ANC candidate Eliud Owalo was Deputy President William Ruto’s ‘project’.

He described the move by ANC disciplinary committee to suspend him from the party as malicious and a waste of time.

“I want to tell my party leader Musalia Mudavadi that I have no apologies to make for campaigning for Kibra MP-elect Bernard Okoth in the November 7 by-election just as he did for ODM leader Raila Odinga in the 2017 presidential poll,” said Mr Malala.

Taking a swipe at the party leadership, he said: “The party had been hijacked by self-centred individuals incapable of accommodating divergent views.”

He said it was unfortunate that leaders with divergent views in ANC were being branded as rebels and moles.

Mr Malala, who was accompanied by nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi, said the move to suspend him from the party was meant to humiliate him.

“I know there is a scheme to frustrate me but I want to tell my party leadership that I’m not afraid of facing the electorate afresh in a by-election,” said Mr Malala adding that he is yet to receive a letter of suspension from the party.

In a letter dated November 15, ANC Secretary- General Barack Muluka said the party’s National Disciplinary Committee had suspended Mr Malala from membership of Amani National Congress with effect from November 14.

He said the decision had been reached after the disciplinary committee reviewed Senator Malala’s conduct against the party.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has responded to a suspension letter from his party Amani National Congress that was issued on Friday as a result of his support for ODM candidate Bernard Imran Otieno Okoth in the just concluded Kibra by elections.

In his response, Malala defended himself saying he supported Imran for the Kibra by-election on the basis of the NASA coalition.

Malala who spoke to Citizen Digital argued that the National Super Alliance (NASA) statute allows members to support any candidate from the affiliate parties.

The Senator further claimed that he has not received any official communication from the ANC.

However, a letter from the party disciplinary committee said Malala acted against the party and Statute laws.

“We have established that Malala indeed attended the rally and that in fact he made the offending remarks,” the letter from Committee Chairperson Yare Mohammed reads.

Capt. Mohammed termed Malala’s remarks as impugning, thoughtless and tragic noting that the statements were widely shared on social media.

He was referring to an ODM rally which Malala attended and told voters that as the “highest-placed leader” present from ANC, they should rally behind him and support Okoth.

During the October rally, Malala further alleged that the ANC candidate Eliud Owalo was a ‘project’ of Deputy President William Ruto.

On Friday, Nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi defended Malala over the party suspension terming it as ‘a big joke of the year’.

“ANC party has sunk to its lowest by using uncoordinated hirelings with no official status in the party to stifle internal democracy in the party through cheap intimidation tactics that continually erodes Hon Mudavadi political capital and public image,” he said in a statement.

Osotsi was also suspended from the ANC party in March following allegations of misuse of party funds when he served as secretary-general.
