Jubilee Party

Jubilee party nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege on Thursday, January 11, 2024, led a contingent of about 120 Jubilee MCAs to a meeting with President William Ruto.

The meeting was held at the Nakuru State House.

The former ruling party has about 127 MCAs.

Sabina Chege also led the party’s 28 NEC members to the meeting, renewing the leadership wrangles that have been facing the former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s party.

Jubilee has been faced with leadership wrangles for months now as two groups claim to be bona fide officials of the party.

One group has remained loyal to Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja coalition while the other shifted allegiance to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza.

The group led by Sabina Chege and former Kieni MP and now EALA MP Kanini Kega supports President Ruto and alleges to have left the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition.

Another faction led by Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has remained loyal to the Azimio la Umoja coalition party.

Just a day after former president Uhuru Kenyatta held the Jubilee National Delegates Convention (NDC) at the Ngong Racecourse, the registrar of political parties Ann Nderitu has approved his ouster.

Nderitu addressed her directive dated May 19, 2023 to Joshua Kutuny, Deputy Secretary General of the Kanini Kega faction.

She also confirmed the approval of David Murathe and Jeremiah Kioni as Vice Chairman and Secretary General respectively.

Uhuru’s faction during the NDC expelled a dozen officials in an attempt to reconstitute a National Executive Committee (NEC) dominated by President William Ruto loyalists.

The Kenyatta-backed camp axed Kanini Kega, the Acting Secretary General according to changes ratified by a Ruto-backed NEC.

Monday’s meeting also removed Sabina Chege whom the Kega-led group named as Acting Party Leader replacing Kenyatta in changes upheld by the Political Parties Tribunal.

In its judgment delivered on April 16, the tribunal said that the notice for the National Executive Committee meeting issued on February 2 and the subsequent NEC meeting on February 10 which imposed Kega was conducted in line with the party Constitution.

Also removed alongside Kega who served as the Director of Election prior to the leadership coup are former Cheragany MP Joshua Kutunny (Deputy Secretary General) and Former Taveta MP Naomi Shaban (Deputy Party Leader, Outreach).

Others are Jimi Angwenyi (Deputy Party Leader), Kinoti Gatobu (Deputy Party Leader, Operations), Peter Mositet (Deputy Party Leader, Programmes), Nelson Dzuya (National Chairman)  and Kitui Woman Representative Racheal Nyamai (Deputy Director of Elections).

Kenyatta’s camp led by besieged Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni announced Chege’s replacement as House Deputy Minority Whip with Embakasi West David Mwenje.

It named new officials who include Maoka Maore  (Deputy Party Leader, Operations), Saitoti Torome (Chairman), Pauline Njoroge (Deputy Organizing Secretary), Jamleck Kamau (National Director of Elections) and Maison Leshoomo (National Women League Chairperson).

Jubilee Party nominated MP and the embattled National Assembly deputy minority whip Sabina Chege on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 attended Kenya Kwanza’s Parliamentary Group meeting that was held at State House, Nairobi.

A Jubilee Party rebel faction led by EALA MP Kanini Kega had earlier on named Sabina Chege as party leader, ousting Former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, a bid to re-establish party discipline and strengthen its ranks, the Jubilee Party on Monday expelled several party rebels, including Sabina Chege, Kanini Kega and Nelson Dzuya.

The Jubilee NDC held at Ngong Race Course gave the former President an opportunity to stamp his authority in the party amid an onslaught by Ms Chege and a faction led by Mr Kega.

The duo teamed up with a section of Jubilee-elected legislators to kick Uhuru off party leadership alongside Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, Vice chairman David Murathe and National Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi.

Kega would later issue a statement saying that the NDC convened by Uhuru was not recognized by the party and that the changes made would not have any impact.

However, Sabina Chege attended the Kenya Kwanza PG that was hosted by President William Ruto at State House on Tuesday.

The former Murang’a Woman Representative had over the weekend told President Ruto that they are orphans in Jubilee.

Speaking during an interdenominational church service at Isiolo Boys High School on Sunday, May 21, 2023, Ms Chege said the former President had neglected them.

At the same time, Chege pleaded with President Ruto, a former member of the Jubilee party, to accommodate Jubilee leaders when they knock on his door.

Eldas MP Adan Keynan who was elected on a Jubilee ticket was also among the rebel members that attended the Kenya Kwanza PG.

Kanini Kega and Kamkunji MP Yusuf Hassan, a Jubilee MP, also attended the State House meeting.

Her attendance has elicited mixed reactions on the internet considering the fact that she has been fighting for her position as the Azimio deputy minority whip.

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party had resolved to kick her out of the position, but she survived after the National Assmbly speaker Moses Wetangula announced that she would retain her position until such a time when Azimio will convene a proper meeting and communicate her dismissal.

Below are some of the reactions from Kenyans on Twitter after Sabina Chege was spotted at State House during the Kenya Kwanza PG.

Jubilee party has threatened to exit the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition.

Jubilee Party Members of Parliament have said they will walk out of the political formation if one of their own will not be allowed to sit in the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).

They are now demanding one of the three positions set aside for the minority in the commission.

This is after Senate minority whip Fatuma Dullo’s name was removed from the list and replaced by Nyamira Senator Okongo Omugeni.

Dullo was Wednesday kicked out of the nominees to the PSC by the minority in the Senate.

The decision was endorsed by the Senate, with some members accusing her of being gullible and nominating herself to the commission without the knowledge of the leadership.

Conmanship

Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere who was flanked by 10 other Jubilee MPs on Thursday said most of their members were disgruntled by how they have been treated in the coalition, even during the formation of committees in parliament.

Korere noted that Jubilee was not coerced to join ODM in Azimio and should their mebers be mistreated in the coalition, they will leave willingly.

This, she said, is because they have experienced firsthand the conmanship, politics of deceit, and political banditry by their brothers in Azimio.

Parliamentary group meeting

Eldas MP Adan Keynan said they will be holding a parliamentary group meeting to chart a way forward.

He asked the Azimio leadership to fast track the issue, call for a meeting and allow Jubilee to nominate a candidate to the PSC.

The Azimio coalition has struggled to fill the few positions available to them with Jubilee first proposing Sirisa MP John Waluke to the commission.

However, his name was removed from the final list presented to parliament.

The ruling Jubilee party has come out to address concerns over Sirisia MP John Waluke’s fate as the country heads to August general elections.

The lawmaker is facing a corruption case in court and there were rumors that he has not been cleared by his party to defend his seat in August over the graft case.

The Jubilee party through its Bungoma branch county office manager Edward Lubakaya has, however, rubbished the rumors saying that Waluke will be on the ballot.

While issuing the certificates to Jubilee aspirants at the party’s office in Kanduyi, Lubakaya said that Waluke was cleared and already has the certificate and also serving as the Jubilee party chairman in Bungoma county.

He went ahead to tell Waluke’s opponents to brace themselves for a tough fight.

Waluke was in June 2020 convicted of fraud involving Ksh.313 million in shady maize dealings with the National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB) which led to many concluding that he won’t be cleared to defend his seat on 9th of August 2022

Lubakaya further said Jubilee party in Bungoma county will throw its weight behind governor Wycliffe Wangamati’s gubernatorial bid since they all fall under AZIMIO One Kenya coalition and so it won’t have a candidate at that position.

“I want to make it clear that we as Jubilee party Bungoma county, we are going to support governor Wycliffe Wangamati, we won’t have a candidate on that level because we will gang behind Wangamati to see him reelected,” he said

One of the aspirants Dr Ferdinand Nyongesa who is seeking to unseat the DAP-K party leader Wafula Wamunyinyi of Kanduyi Constituency as the Member of Parliament expressed his confidence in Jubilee party saying that he is now ready to face his competitors fully.

“My supporters should now stop worrying and listening to  rumors that I have stepped down. I am in the race and let my competitors start parking to clear the space because I am coming with a different style,” he said.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has rubbished claims that he is set to ditch Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the ruling Jubilee party.

The lawmaker says he is still strongly behind Ruto and that he is determined to see him take over the government come 9th of August.

Addressing his constituents in Kibingei ward at Khwiroro market, Barasa said that he indeed had a talk with the Jubilee party members but he has not declared to have moved from the United Democratic Party(UDA) terming it as propaganda.

“I met with the Jubilee party members and because of my good work, they asked me to join and work with them, just before I make a decision, they have already started walking around propagating lies that I have ditched UDA,I want to tell them that I am strongly behind William Ruto, ”he said.

This comes after an MP and MCAs allied to Ruto in western region decamped from the party led by the former UDA chairman John Waluke and joined the Jubilee party who’s leader is president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Barasa went further to urge the residents to bank their trust in him and his party boss William Ruto saying that with him, the country will be able to revive the ailing economy making sure that every Kenyan gets a sustainable living.

“The current government doesn’t care about the hustling Kenyans and that’s why I am asking you to vote in the leaders who can relate to the problems that common people go through, ”he said.

Jubilee Party has moved to de-whip Riruta MCA James Kiriba over his plan to have the deed of transfer agreement that saw City Hall cede four functions to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services revoked.

Jubilee on Thursday communicated their decision to have the ‘rebel’ MCA dismissed from all committees from going against the party’s stance on the matter.

This followed when Kiriba on Tuesday tabled a motion calling for creation of transitional oversight committee to instigate the reversal of the four transferred functions.

They included health, Planning, Transport, Public Works as well as utilities and ancillary services.

Kiriba argued that the the term of the NMS coming to an end in March 2022, the assembly needs to initiate the process of reversing the transferred functions in preparation of the end of deed of transfer.

In his proposals, the MCA said that the transnational committee should include the Leader of Majority, Leader of Minority, Majority Whip, Minority Whip and six chairpersons on behalf of the committees of the transferred functions.

The committee should also include three other members representing the youth, women, and persons living with disability from among the MCAs.

But in their response Jubilee through the Majority Whip Paul Kados saw Kiriba’s actions as an affront to the party psition.

Kados said Kiriba ignored advice from the party to avoid sponsoring a motion of such magnitude.

A letter released by the party revealed that they are contemplating a suitable action against Kiriba for going against the standing orders and the constitution of Jubilee with respect to sponsoring of party motions and the pursuit of such businesses.

Ruto with Waiguru

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has warned Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru over her decision to ditch President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party for Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

According to Gachagua, UDA is the party that has been chosen by Mt. Kenya people.

The embattled lawmaker now warns that should Waiguru continue ignoring Kirinyaga residents’ party of choice, she risks facing the wrath of the people which he says is more ruthless and long term than State persecution.

Gachagua went ahead to warn that Waiguru will lose her gubernatorial seat in 2022 should she fail to honour residents’ call for her to join UDA.

The warning comes just days after the Krinyaga county chief hinted at decamping the Uhuru camp for the DP Ruto’s hustler nation.

“We applaud Governor Waiguru for the courage, I know they will pester her here and there. But it is better for her to be pestered by police than be punished by citizens. You know the citizens’ punishment is legal it has no appeal once they are done with you it is five years, but this thing of being apprehended on Monday, Friday is a simple thing,” Rigathi told Waiguru.

The Mathira MP who once served as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal assistance further extended the welcoming arm to other Jubilee members stating that UDA’s window is wide open for them.

“UDA is a very popular party here and we want to say that all those who are coming are welcome, our party is very democratic, very wide and we will accommodate everybody,” he remarked.

Waiguru’s hint at joining UDA has ignited political rivalry in the region. Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Purity Ngirici is among the closest allies of Ruto who are seeking to battle it out with Waiguru.

Ngirici has already made her bid and has been on several campaign trails to popularise herself to the Kirinyaga electorates.

On her part, Ngirici has maintained that she is ready to face Waiguru in a fair UDA nomination if she makes real her decision to ditch the Jubilee party.

Apart from Ngirici, NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua is also in the race to try and unseat Waiguru. Karua has also made it bold that she will be taking her second stab at the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat after losing in the 2017  General election even after staging several court cases.

Waiguru had earlier admitted that she would lose the Kirinyaga seat if she risked defending it on a Jubilee party ticket.

Deputy President William Ruto has spoken on why he is still in the ruling Jubilee party even after forming the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking on Thursday August 5, 2021 after hosting a UDA party Parliamentary Group at his Karen residence in Nairobi, the second in command said that no one should dictate him on whether to leave Jubilee or not.

According to DP Ruto, he is not a guest in the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led party, maintaining that he has his own choice whether to leave the party or not.

The DP noted that people make choices at the opportune moment when they think different choices are necessary, and therefore nobody should be bothered on why they are still there.

Ruto who was flanked by his allies also said that people should stop mocking their bottom-up economic approach.

“We welcome criticism but don’t mock our bottom-up economic model..” said the second in command.

Ruto’s allies who also addressed the press at the same event termed Jubilee as a “collapsed” political outfit that had “abandoned its agenda.

They also accused the defunct National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition of hijacking the Jubilee agenda.

DP Ruto’s political opponents have been calling him to either resign or quit Jubilee since he has a new political outfit which he has been using to directly compete with President Kenyatta during by-elections.

The opponents who include ODM leader Raila Odinga’s allies and President Kenyatta’s loyalists have maintained that the DP has been disrespecting his boss.

The Jubilee-ODM merger deal that could lead to an Uhuru-Raila 2022 coalition will have to wait longer after the ruling party suspended any coalitions talks with the Orange party.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee had kicked off coalition talks with Raila Odinga’s ODM to take on Deputy President William Ruto in the next general election.

However, the ruling party which has suffered losses in the recent by-elections in the country has decided to halt the merger plan to focus on revamping ahead of 2022.

According to reports, a crisis meeting of the Jubilee secretariat and MPs on Monday July 19 agreed to suspend the proposed deal with Raila over systemic challenges that could hurt the process.

Jubilee Party deputy secretary-general Joshua Kutuny who spoke to a local daily said that while the decision does not mean a total halt to the coalition plans, it will usher in fresh timeliness.

It has now emerged that the agenda dominated the meeting that was attended by at least 16 MPs, despite not being mentioned at a joint presser made on Monday.

It was resolved that it would be unhealthy for Jubilee to proceed with coalition talks with ODM at a time when it is battling internal revolt.

According to Jubilee joint secretary for the parliamentary group Adan Keynan, the party will instead focus on reorganising, restructuring and revamping its structures before entering into a coalition agreement.

The MP said given that DP Ruto’s camp had left for UDA, the loyal members whom he said are the majority will stabilise Jubilee.

Raila’s ODM had said it was focused on its coalition plans with Jubilee despite the ruling party’s loss in last week’s Kiambaa parliamentary by-election that was won by UDA.

United Democratic Alliance candidate Njuguna Wanjiku got 21, 773 votes to capture the seat, beating Jubilee’s Karuri Njama who garnered 21,263 votes.

Ruto with Waiguru

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has told Deputy President William Ruto not to use the just concluded Kiambaa by-election as a determining factor for the 2022 general election.

Taking to her official social media handles on Friday July 16, 2021, Waiguru said that DP Ruto needs over 100 per cent of Mt Kenya support if he has to convert Kiambaa win ahead of 2022.

Waiguru’s comment comes just hours after DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Njuguna Wanjiku won against rival Kariri Njama of Jubilee in the concluded by-elections.

In the finally tally that was declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday morning, Njuguna garnered 21,773 votes while Njama followed closely with 21,263 votes.

Waiguru said the results should worry DP Ruto who, according to her, needs 101 per cent of Mt Kenya support if his candidacy is to convert to the State House.

She noted that the results also mean that Jubilee party’s core supporters are unhappy and urgent action is needed to forestall further downwards slide.

According to Waiguru, by-elections in Kenya’s electoral history have always been outliers with little or no relationship with the general election.

United Democratic Alliance (UDA’) candidate Njuguna Wanjiku has won the hotly contested Kiambaa Parliamentary by-election.

Wanjiku garnered 21,773 votes (50%) beating Jubilee party’s Kariri Njama who had 21,263 votes (49%), a difference of 510 votes.

IEBC suspended the Kiambaa constituency vote tallying on Friday morning, July 16, after the Jubilee candidate and his supporters stormed into the tallying centre and caused a fracas.

Njama and his supporters alleged that IEBC under Wafula Chebukati were tilting elections in the favour of UDA’s  Njuguna Wanjiku.

152 polling stations out of 154 had been tallied with Wanjiku leading with 21,301 votes, 244 more than Kariri Njama’s 21,057 votes at the time. Police took over the tallying centre and locked contesting officials out of the premises.

Controversial Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has sparked mixed reactions on social media after advising Jubilee party to rig the remaining two polling stations in the just concluded Kiambaa by-election.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had suspended tallying of votes in Kiambaa after a fracas broke out at Karuri Secondary School in the morning of Friday, July 16 when Jubilee candidate Kariri Njama claimed the by-election was being rigged in favour of UDA’s John Njuguna.

In a video circulating online, Kariri is seen protesting the results which placed Njuguna in the lead with 21,606 votes.

Kariri on the other hand had 21,151 votes after votes from 153 polling stations out of 154 had been tallied.

But taking to his official Twitter account this morning, Babu Owino advised the ruling Jubilee party to rig the remaining polling stations so as to spare President Uhuru Kenyatta from embarrassment.

According to the controversial lawmaker, Jubilee has all it needs to win the concluded by-election in Kiambaa. Babu Owino said Jubilee has the police, IEBC and NYS, which should aid them in rigging.

“I urge the Jubilee government to rig in the remaining 2 polling stations at Kiambaa Constituency.Stop embarrassing President Uhuru. You have the police(Rungus and Teargas),IEBC and you also have NYS.Rig rig rig,” tweeted Babu Owino.

Babu Owino’s post sparked mixed reactions from netizens, with some telling him off for publicly advocating for rigging.

Some said that Babu Owino was inciting the public to cause violence should the rigging happen as he wishes.

“And if that happens, will violence not ERUPT? this is basically incitement to violence,” one of the users posted.

Cate Waruguru with Ruto

Laikipia County Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru has broken her silence on claims that she has joined Deputy President William Ruto’s camp.

Reports had circulated on social media that the controversial lawmaker had ditched the ruling Jubilee party to join DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

While addressing the media on Wednesday July 14, Waruguru claimed that the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party is in limbo.

According to her, much needs to be done to restore the public confidence in the ruling party.

“There has been a massive exodus from the Jubilee Party and I have seen speculations from the members of the public asking whether Waruguru has moved to the ‘wheelbarrow’ side. My answer to their speculations is relative, every serious politician, you listen to your electorates. I am on my own. My bosses are the voters and the people of Laikipia,” Waruguru said.

She further noted that she will be making an announcement very soon telling the country of her decision.

The MP added that the people will be the ones to decide as to which side they would like to vote in terms of the parties.

Jubilee party candidate in the Kiambaa by-election Karanja Kariri Njama has broken his silence over claims that he has pulled out of the mini poll.

Speaking shortly after speculations that he had pulled out of the hotly contested race, Kariri Njama dismissed the claims, arguing that the rumours are being spread by his opponents who have already sensed defeat.

Reports had emerged that a section of Kiambaa constituency voters had started receiving text messages alleging that Kariri Njama had pulled out of the race.

Blogger Robert Alai took to his official Twitter account to accuse the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party of accessing the Kiambaa voters’ database and sent messages to them saying that the Jubilee candidate had withdrawn. Dailytrends.co.ke cannot, however, substantiate the blogger’s allegation, since that is his own opinion.

The highly anticipated Kiambaa by-election is set for Thursday, July 15, and stakes in the mini poll are high.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission cleared eight candidates to compete in the race. Kariri Njama will fly the ruling Jubilee Party’s flag in the Kiambaa by-election.

He was awarded the party’s ticket to run for the parliamentary seat after emerging as the best candidate following rigorous interviews conducted by the outfit’s officials.

UDA party associated with Deputy President William Ruto unveiled John Njuguna Wanjiku as its flagbearer in the contest.

The Kiambaa MP seat fell vacant following the death of Paul Koinange on Wednesday, March 31. Koinange was elected Kiambaa MP on a Jubilee Party ticket in the 2017 General Election.

Business mogul-cum politician Suleiman Shahbal has officially ditched President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee party for Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Through a statement dated July 6, 2021, the former Mombasa County gubernatorial aspirant said that he had officially resigned as a member of the ruling party following his announcement to join the Orange party.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the Jubilee Party leadership for the support offered to me throughout my membership,” Shahbal said.

He further noted that he was going to put his efforts in ensuring the merger between Jubilee and ODM parties is realised.

Image

His move comes less than a decade since he quit the party, after losing the ODM nominations to Governor Hassan Joho in 2013.

Shahbal shocked his supporters when he defected to UDF from ODM, and then to Wiper Party, all in a matter of weeks.

He moved to Wiper on January 19, 2013, after three of his agents were allegedly roughed up by ODM supporters at the height of the contest for the orange party’s nomination.

Last month, Shahbal, who was addressing the Mombasa Luo Focus Group, expressed his interest in succeeding Governor Joho whose second term is ending in the next 13 months.

He rallied his support behind ODM leader Raila Odinga urging his audience at the forum to consider Raila’s presidential bid in 2022.

The businessman also pushed for unity between Raila and Kalonzo, adding that he would be happy if he saw the duo at the helm of the country’s leadership.

Raila on Saturday resisted pressure from party supporters to endorse Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir for the Mombasa governorship.

Both Nassir and Shahbal have declared interest in suceeding Joho. They are both angling for Raila’s blessings as they seek to run on the ODM party ticket.

Nassir is banking on his loyalty to the party to receive Raila’s blessings while Shahbal is hoping his friendship with the former Prime Minister and his financial muscle will endear him to the ODM leadership.
