The owner of a building that collapsed in Ruaka last week was Monday arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Jennifer Kamau aged 59 years was arrested at 2am as she tried to flee to Texas, USA.

DCI boss Amin Mohamed Ibrahim in a statement on Monday afternoon said DCI detectives based at JKIA pounced on Mrs. Kamau before she boarded a flight destined for Texas, in the United States of America.

The woman was however taken ill after the arrest and was rushed to a city hospital by DCI officers, where she is receiving treatment as she awaits court arraignment.

Two people lost their lives on Thursday last week after a six-storey building belonging to the woman collapsed on an adjacent building, while tenants were asleep at around 3am.

On Monday morning, another building in Ruiru, Kiambu County collapsed hours after over 100 households were evacuated.

Storey building collapses

A five-storey building has collapsed in Ruiru, Kiambu County just hours after over 100 tenants were evacuated.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi Sunday afternoon led an evacuation operation after the building was reported to have developed cracks.

Governor Wamatangi led the operation after receiving reports on the danger the building posed from the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Ruiru OCPD.

This is the second building to collapse in Kiambu within one week. On November 17, another 5-storey building collapsed in Ruaka, Kiambu County.

Prior to that, another building under construction had collapsed in Tassia, Embakasi East Constituency in Nairobi County.

Authorities have since warned developers to avoid shortcuts while putting up such structures.

Governor Wamatangi who spoke during the Sunday evacuation operation in Ruiru said following due process while putting up structures will help save developers from losses witnessed after the buildings collapse.

A man stabbed his girlfriend four times before turning the killer knife on himself on Tuesday night in Juja, Kiambu County.

Witnesses told DCI detectives that Daniel Mwangi Wairimu, 39, had earlier visited his girlfriend Jane Njogu at her Mpesa shop within Juja shopping centre, where the two clashed over an unestablished matter.

The tiff went on until the lady who is believed to be in her early 30s closed up her business, then the two proceeded to the lady’s house at Palyjote Apartments in Juja.

Minutes past 10pm, piercing wails of a woman had however, hurled the neighbourhood into befuddlement. Mwangi drove three knife stabs into his girlfriend’s back, and a fourth one through her belly.

Thunderstruck neighbours who thronged the scene found her body in a pool of blood, and were too late to save her life.

After the deadly attack, Mwangi reportedly turned the knife on himself, driving it through his neck. In an attempt to save him, members of the public rushed him to hospital but he succumbed to profuse bleeding on the way.

The cause of the appalling deaths of Daniel Mwangi and Jane Njogu is currently being investigated by detectives based in Juja. Meanwhile, the bodies have been moved to Thika General Kago Funeral Home awaiting autopsy.

Kenyan companies linked to land sales in Kiambu County are again embroiled in controversy after a flagship property was accused of fraudulent dealings.

In court filings, Finsco Africa and Heri Homes are accused of selling land over which the heirs of a coffee farming dynasty are feuding.

The 200-acre parcel, marketed as Legacy Ridges, sits on Ruiru-Kamiti Road and is advertised as “affordability meets lifestyle”, with properties starting at Kshs 8.4 million.

Also known as Wamikey Estate Limited, the family property is allegedly being illegally sold off by Virginia Waithera, in collusion with Finsco Africa and Heri Homes, without the authorisation of other family members.

Waithera is the second wife of prominent Kiambu businessman David Ndua Thuo (deceased).

The children of Thuo’s first marriage to Alice Njeri moved to court to stop Waithera from managing Wamikey “without transparency to the rest of the family to the extent that she has sold and/or transferred shares and/or tampered with the registration of the property.”

“Waithera has entered into an illegal joint venture agreement with developers known as Heri Homes, Finsco Africa, who are developing the property belonging to the estate and have named the development Legacy Ridges,” said Godfrey Alfred Hinga, a son of the deceased businessman.

Following the launch of the real estate project at an event on 22 February 2022, Higa says he wrote to Waithera, Heri Homes and Finsco Africa, but they failed to respond to the letter.

In court filings, Hinga states that the land allegedly misappropriated for Legacy Ridges has a value of more than KES 1 billion and that the Wamikey Estate “as a whole risks being lost to scammers.”

“Virginia Waithera does not have any higher right than the other beneficiaries of the estate,” he states.
The court case risks snarling the Legacy Ridges development.

The woes of Finsco Africa and Heri Homes stretch across Kiambu County to another development, Riverline Ridges, now stalled due to court allegations of a fraud that pits heirs of Bernard Njinu Kiarie, a powerful Moi-era police chief, against each other.

According to court filings, Fisnco and Heri Homes have not purchased the 428 acres but are already selling the land to unsuspecting buyers without disclosing the lack of clear title.

A prison warder based in Thika GK Prison in Kiambu County is currently in police custody after allegations that he conspired with his colleague to rape a 21 year-old woman.

The woman claims that she was sexually abused on October 4, when she had gone to visit her husband who works at the facility.

The alleged victim said she lives in Kisii where her husband previously worked and her husband had sent her fare by M-pesa to go visit him in Thika.

She said she and her one-and-a-half year-old son arrived in Thika at 8 pm on Monday.

She met two prison warders at Thika GK Prison’s main gate and she informed them that she came to visit her husband who was unreachable on the phone at that time.

She therefore asked the two officers to assist her in tracing him. She sat at the visitors’ waiting bay for two hours and at 10 pm, the two warders returned and told her their attempts to trace her husband were futile.

Because it was raining, one of the officers took her and the child to shelter in his house in the police quarters.

“It was a small mabati house,” said the woman. She was told to shelter there and she would be assisted in the morning of October 5 in tracing her husband.

She then said a few minutes to 11 pm, the two warders returned and locked the door inside using a chair.

She said one of the grabbed and pinned her on the floor, he then brandished a firearm and warned to kill her if she dared scream.

According to the alleged victim, the two took turns in raping her. They then left after committing the crime. The woman said she spent the whole night crying in the room.

In the morning she met a female prison warder and she confided in her. ‘She took me to her senior supervisors where I reported the ordeal, I, thereafter, went to a hospital in Sega town,” said the woman.

According to her, she was referred to Thika Level 5 Hospital for examination. Later that day, she went to Thika Police Station and filed a rape report.

Sources say that her O.B number 88/12/10/2021 was issued on Tuesday October 12 after several cover-up complaints by the woman.

Her medical report confirmed that she was indeed raped. On Tuesday October 5, Thika West Sub-County Police Commander Daniel Kinyua confirmed that one of the prison warders suspected of sexually assaulting the woman was arrested.

The police boss said they are investigating the rap allegation against the two warders and the woman. He added that they won’t cover it up if they find the two culpable.

Up to date, the husband of the alleged rape woman is still out of reach.

A former MP is on the spot as residents of Membley Estate in Kiambu have protested after he established a bar in their neighborhood.

The attempts of the residents to call on relevant authorities to intervene has bore no fruits as the former MP of Ol Joro Orok constituency John Muriithi Waiganjo has continued to operate his bar and restaurant against the residence’s bylaws. The MP has however denied the allegations.

The residents have complained of loud music, strangers thronging the area and hundreds of vehicles being parked outside.

The residential area called Plant House is on the Eastern Bypass in Membley Estate. Residents have said with his family of six children and his wife, he occupies the house at the same time selling alcohol.

Last year, residents of Membley Daykio wrote to the Ruiru sub-county administrator, Deputy County Commissioner, Ruiru sub-county and the Kiambu County CEC for Lands, Housing and physical planning to complain about the changes.

However,a week ago, the politician told his neighbors off after social and mainstream media highlighted their plight.

He posted a letter on Whatsapp groups claiming that the Kiambu County planning, technical committee held on May 3 approved change of user.

However, residents claimed the letter is fake and he got it with the assistance of his brother who is an MCA for Kahawa West.

Despite their complains in 2020, the former MP sought for change of user on February 10. The letter said he was seeking regularization of change of use from residential to commercial.

Ousted Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu’s deputy Dr James Nyoro has finally been sworn in as the third governor of Kiambu County.

Kiambu Chief Magistrate Patriciah Gichohi was the Master of Ceremony for the day and led proceedings.

High Court Judge John Oyiengo administered the oath of office at the ceremony attended by various leaders from Kiambu and beyond.

The ceremony proceeded smoothly a day after Nyoro’s scheduled swearing-in on Thursday, January 30 failed to take off as Oyiengo noted that organizers of the ceremony had failed to comply with various constitutional provisions.

The court on Thursday declined to grant Waititu orders to stop the swearing in of Nyoro as the new county chief.

Waititu on Thursday morning moved to Milimani Law Courts where he sought the orders and filed a suit challenging the senate’s majority vote to endorse his impeachment.

Waititu, argued that the Senate did not properly evaluate the impeachment motion forwarded from the County Assembly in December last year, that voted to send him parking over abuse of office and other charges.
