Nairobi county governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has maintained that his arrest was Politically Schemed and designed to Humiliate and Embarrass him.

Taking to his social media accounts on Sunday evening, Sonko condemned the manner in which he was arrested, faulting DPP Noordin Haji for failing to summon him instead.

He has condemned his arrest, accusing the government of using excessive force on him.

Sonko says that a total of 25 police cars, a police chopper and 200 police officer were deployed to arrest him.

He however called for calmness from his supporters as he gets processed to appear in court tomorrow (Monday) to face corruption charges.

Sonko was arrested on Friday in Voi after DPP Haji issued a warrant of arrest against him.

Here is Sonko’s full statement.

“MY PERSONAL STATEMENT

“In the last three months, I have been summoned by the EACC four record times, where I have faithfully honoured all the summons.

“Question is, WHAT was so difficult for Mr. Noordin Haji or even Mr. Twalib Mbarak to follow the same process of summoning me to present myself at the Eacc offices for processing and charging?

“Iam convinced that my arrest was politically schemed and designed to humiliate and embarrass me. There was no point for the deployment of a police helicopter, more than 25 police cars, and 200 police officers to locate and arrest me, while we all know that, on the same material day, there was terror attack in Wajir County where the chopper with this kind of reinforcement, deployment and operation was needed.

“Lastly and most importantly, I wish to call upon ALL my loyal supporters and well-wishers to remain calm and stay at home or go to their usual places of work from tomorrow (Monday), as I get processed to appear before a court of law.

“I am a law abiding citizen, and therefore ask my supporters to stay away from the courts or any other activities that may threaten the peace.

“I urge all my supporters to allow the law enforcement agencies to do their work, and let the law take its course. The peace and stability of Nairobi is more important than anything else.

“Kwahivyo tafadhalini nawaomba muwache nipambane na hali yangu ninapofikishwa mahakamani kesho asubuhi kujibu mashtaka yanayonikabidhi. Kitu ninahitaji kwenu nyote wapendwa kwasasa ni maombi hata mahaters wangu wote muniombee ninapopambana na hali yangu.

“Ahsanteni sana, na Mungu awabariki Nyote.

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has come to Governor Mike Sonko’s defence, linking his troubles with authorities to politics.

Speaking when she appeared on K24’S Punchline show on Sunday evening, Speaker Elachi said Sonko is also being fought for allowing her back to office after she was ousted by MCAs.

“We voted for Sonko. We fully voted for him. We knew his style of leadership….and I think Kenyans forget that Sonko is an orphan, he doesn’t have a mother and a father. He has his God and he will finish his five years. The only father Sonko has is President Uhuru Kenyatta,” said Ms Elachi.

Sonko has recently found himself on the wrong side of the authorities with investigative agencies digging into his financial dealings as well as his criminal past.

On November 5, Sonko spent was queried by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over alleged cover-up of his past brushes with the law.

The governor spent hours with EACC detectives at the Integrity Centre in Nairobi.

EACC sleuths accused Sonko of failing to disclose information about his pending multiple criminal cases in court when he was seeking clearance to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial race.

Speaker Elachi said there is more than meets the eye in the Sonko’s woes since it were the same government agencies that cleared him to run as an MP and later for senate, long before he contemplated vying for the governor’s seat.

Nairobi Senator Jonhson Sakaja has once again teared into Governor Mike Sonko over the state of affairs in the county.

On Thursday, during a live press conference, Sakaja alluded that the state of the Capital city was wanting, adding that the governor was involved in theatrics of fighting cartels yet the city was drowning in corruption and mismanagement.

He also stated that governor Sonko was ruling the county with impunity and demanded for accountability of billions of shillings tax payers’ money.

“The people are being treated to all manner of shadow boxing, dramatization ‘vipindiree‘ in the name of fighting cartels. Nairobians are demanding accountability of the billions of shillings that have been allocated to Nairobi annually,” he said.

Sakaja was accompanied by other legislators from different parties, who made it clear that Nairobi’s Growth Development Profit (GDP) contributes 60 percent in the economy hence the need to shun impunity and make progressive development.

Former Nairobi County Assembly Majority leader Abdi Guyo claims governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been sponsoring chaos that have been going on at City Hall.

This, Guyo claims is in Sonko’s efforts to divide the MCAs.

Guyo and speaker Beatrice Elachi appeared before the Senate’s Devolution and Intergovernmental Committee at different times on Thursday over the chaos that has rocked the city assembly.

“The problem we have in Nairobi is the governor. The chaos in the County Assembly is well choreographed so as not to have proper oversight,” he said.

The Matopeni/Spring Valley MCA told the Laikipia Senator John Kinyua-chaired committee that the county chief has been intimidating and blackmailing members who are critical of his administration.

He told the committee that the governor has an army of loyal goons, some of whom have been appointed to plum positions in the county, who he has been unleashing to whoever questions his leadership style.

Guyo, who was removed from the powerful majority leader seat by Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju on Monday following weeks of chaos marked by teargas and gunshots, said City Hall was headed for the dogs unless President Uhuru Kenyatta intervenes.

“The only person who can restore order in Nairobi is our party leader himself. The governor cannot do it because he knows that if he does, then we will properly oversight him,” he said.

Nairobi County governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has yet again exposed cartels who have been milking his government dry by supplying ‘hot air’.

Taking to his facebook account on Wednesday evening, Sonko said that the cartels who had siphoned money from the previous Evans Kidero-led administration have come back again.

The flamboyant governor says a company by the name PROLAND Ltd owned by Mr Fredrick Mungai recorded a consent with Nairobi County Gov’t during the previous administration to be paid Sh35m for supplying hot air

According to Sonko, the cartels were paid over Sh50m during the previous regime for the supply of air.

He notes that they are back with plain cloth Police officers at his Finance offices to force the County Government to pay more millions at the expense of taxpayer’s money.

The county chief says that so far the cartels have already been paid Sh175,000,000 without supplying anything to the county.

His facebook post reads “The cartels are back again at City Hall. PROLAND Ltd owned by a Mr Fredrick Mungai recorded a consent with Nairobi County Gov’t during the previous administration to be paid Sh35m for supplying hot air.

They were paid over Sh50m during the previous regime for the supply of air.

Now they’re back with plain cloth Police officers at our Finance offices to force the County Government to pay more millions at the expense of taxpayer’s money.

So far they have already been paid Sh175,000,000 without supplying anything to the county.

But as long as I’m the Governor of Nairobi, I will not allow the cartels to steal County Gov’t money.”

He has however vowed to fight the cartels saying that he will not allow them to steal County government money.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has admitted to paying millions of shillings to Amaco Insurance, a company reportedly associated with Deputy President Dr William Ruto.

Speaking on Wednesday night on the Pointblank show hosted by Tony Gachoka, Governor Sonko rebuffed claims that the payment smacked of corruption.

“I paid Amaco. A company which is associated with the Deputy President, ” he said.

According to the flamboyant county boss, the Nairobi County government entered into a contract with the insurance company even before he became the governor.

The contract would see vehicles belonging to the county government of Nairobi panel beaten back to shape should they be damaged.

Sonko explained that Amaco sub-contracted panel beating to another company he said is owned by his friend.

He rejected claims that the award of the tender was flawed, saying that Amaco was subjected to a competitive and rigorous process before the tender was awarded.

The payment to Amaco is part of an ongoing investigation initiated by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

According to the EACC, money was wired to Governor Sonko’s personal account by an individual who was given a tender by the county government of Nairobi, raising questions of financial impropriety.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko says he will — through his Sonko Rescue Team outfit — transport the bodies of Likoni tragedy victims, Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, from Mombasa to Makueni on Friday.

A representative of Kighenda’s family, Luka Mbaati, on Wednesday told media that the mother-and-daughter’s remains will be transported from Jocham mortuary in Mombasa on Friday night (October 18) ahead of the burial, which will take place at Ngaamba area in Kilome Constituency, Makueni County the following day, Saturday, October 19.

And now, Sonko says he has offered to transport the bodies at no cost to the family.

“We have agreed with those in charge of the burial arrangements to transport the bodies and play any other possible role in the burial arrangements,” Sonko said on Thursday.

The bodies of Kighenda and Mutheu were removed from the sea last Friday, October 11, after staying immersed in the Indian Ocean for 13 days.

Kighenda and Mutheu died after their vehicle, a Toyota Isis, slid off MV Harambee on the Likoni Ferry channel on September 29 and plunged 58 meters into the sea.

Mariam’s family said Wednesday that after burying their loved ones, they will sue the Kenya Ferry Services Limited for negligence.

“We are, currently, continuing with burial plans. Once we have laid our loved ones to rest, we will institute legal action against the Kenya Ferry Services Limited,” Mbaati said.

Thirty five-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her 4-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu, suffocated to death, autopsy results released Wednesday, October 16, showed.

According to State’s chief pathologist, Dr. Johansen Oduor, the two died of asphyxia – a condition arising when the body is deprived of oxygen.

Asphyxia, simply known as suffocation, causes unconsciousness or death, Oduor said.

“I can confirm that Kighenda and Mutheu died as a result of lack of oxygen in their bodies. We’ll now hand over the report to police so that they can continue with their investigations,” the pathologist said Wednesday after overseeing the 1-hour and 30 minutes’ postmortem exercise at Jocham Hospital in Mombasa.

Oduor said the autopsy outcome showed that the mother-and-daughter “died around the same time.”

“None of them suffered any physical injury,” said Oduor.

The pathologist, however, said it was impossible for them to ascertain the time Kighenda and Mutheu remained alive under water before finally succumbing.

“We couldn’t establish that because the bodies had stayed immersed in the ocean for long,” said Oduor.

“The longer one remains immersed in water, the more difficult it is to get accurate results on how long one stayed alive before succumbing to asphyxia. Decomposition of the bodies had begun. However, it couldn’t be possible to tell when it exactly started because when one dies in a water body, the [decomposition] process is delayed,” said Oduor.

Likoni lead detective, Charles Onyango, told K24 Digital that they have commenced investigations into the death of the two.

“We are yet to question Kenya Ferry Services managing director, Bakari Gowa, in regard to the mother-and-daughter’s deaths. However, we have lined him up for interrogation,” said Onyango.

Following the Likoni tragedy that claimed the two lives, President Uhuru Kenyatta sacked the Kenya Ferry Services Limited chairperson Dan Mwazo.

In a Wednesday, October 16, Gazette Notice Number 9833, the Head of State said Mwazo was dismissed with immediate effect.

Also fired, were other non-executive board members of the Kenya Ferry Services Limited. They include: Naima Amir, Philip Ndolo, Rosina Mruttu and Daula Omar.

Governor Mike Sonko’s time of his life and a lot of fun has continued to create different reactions, with latest coming from a video he shared recently on social media while in France.

The Nairobi County chief says he is bench-marking in France, but Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo thinks otherwise.

According to Odhiambo, Sonko is trying to get people to cushion him.

The MP says that Sonko has just agreed to have Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi back just because he is facing difficulty.

Speaking during K24’s punchline show on Sunday night, the ODM legislator advised Sonko to hit the gym over his video while in France.

And asked about her penchant for political drama, specifically on trading insults with Sonko, the ODM MP said she is not a “Michelle Obama.”

“When you go low, I go lower…think what you want of me, I don’t care,” said the Suba North MP, terming Sonko’s recent theatrics abroad as a distraction to the ills bedeviling Nairobi County.

“He is young and has a lot of energy. But I think he has disappointed a lot of people. I think he is distracting attention from some of the things happening in Nairobi,” said Odhiambo when asked about what she thinks of Sonko.

Speaking on why Sonko has not appointed his deputy up to now, Odhiambo said that the county chief fears taking advice from other leaders and professionals.

Beatrice Elachi is back in office as Nairobi County Assembly Speaker following a court order that reinstated her after impeachment.

In a short video circulated to newsrooms by the County Government’s Director of Communications Elkana Jacob, Elachi is heard telling Governor Mike Sonko that she is back and ready to receive him at the airport when he arrives from France.

She did not have kind words for MCAs who kicked her out of office in dramatic scenes that went viral on social media in September last year.

Elachi had stayed away from office following acrimony from a section of County Assembly members who were opposed to her reinstatement, but she walked in on Wednesday and assumed her responsibility.

Ngara MCA Chege Mwaura, who has been acting in the position, however, insists he is still in charge.

When it comes to honoring promises, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has never disappointed! But what happened to the promise given to the victims of Precious talents academy tragedy?

Well, this is why the county boss is threatening to fire members of his staff. It is alleged that the compensation that was to be made was never fulfilled.

A mourner claimed that the Sh100,000 each sent out by the county to the bereaved parents at Precious Talent Academy was never received.

Through a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday evening, Sonko threatened to take action on the culprits, if the money meant for the families was not delivered to them.

“I swear by the name of the almighty God if this speaker in the attached video is talking the truth and not politics played by the area MP then I can see more staff going home,” Sonko said.

In the video, the mourner disclosed that the bereaved families did not receive any money.

“Nairobi county government promised to give us money when we were at the memorial. ODM leader Raila Odinga also stated that he would give his donation and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s one too. Sadly, we have not received the donations,” the mourner said.

“This family has not been supported at all. People were alleging that the government stood for this funeral when we had our own Harambee. We ourselves contributed to raising money to hire the buses.”

But Sonko said his Education CEC, chief officer finance and chief officer Disaster Management confirmed that each family that lost a kid received the money for funeral expenses.

“Besides that the county provided eight coffins and transport to each family. Watasema hiyo pesa walitransfer kwanani [They will say where they transferred the money to], ” he said.

“I don’t play with emotions especially with families that are mourning. I mean what I say and I will do a thorough follow up kesho.”

Eight pupils lost their lives when a classroom collapsed at Precious Talent Academy in Dagoreti last month.

The school is reported to have a population of about 800 pupils.

According to the locals, the entire Ngando Ward does not have a primary public school, apart from Lenana High School which is said to be sitting on more than 200 hectares of land.

Since his appointment as ‘super’ CEC in July, it has been a question of when Charles Kerich would be kicked out of City Hall.

‘Mr Fix It’ as he is popularly known at City Hall, fell out with Governor Mike Sonko immediately after he was elevated to coordinate projects in the capital.

The veteran journalist was among the 16 top officials the governor suspended on Wednesday following the disaster at Precious Talent School in Dagoretti on Monday. Eight pupils died after a classroom block collapsed.

Kerich was seen as the executive closest to Sonko and served in four dockets – Lands, Finance, Health and ICT – in two years.

He was a hands-on officer who the governor turned to ‘fix things’ whenever a crisis occurred at City Hall.

Insiders say that Kerich’s fate was sealed at a night meeting between the governor and two executives in July. The Star established that there was disquiet in Sonko’s cabinet over the appointment of Kerich as super CEC.

The executives, who were opposed to Kerich ‘meddling in their dockets’ by overseeing projects initiated by their sectors, made unfounded allegations involving him.

“They were not happy at all. Kerich had to go and that was known to many people at City Hall,” a source said.

Days later, Sonko hinted at a fallout with his ‘most trusted executives’ and threatened to sack six CECs and three chief officers for being disloyal and cutting deals behind his back.

He ranted in a Facebook post that some CECs had been recruited by cartels and were now making decisions without his knowledge.

“Imagine a CEC you trust most being absorbed by the so-called cartels to the extent of making sensitive decisions without consulting me as a boss,” the governor wrote on his Facebook page.

He claimed the Lands and Planning department was allowing Chinese developers to construct extra-floors on buildings against the law.

Sonko had in May appointed Kerich to the Finance docket from Lands and Planning sector which he had led for more than a year.

The governor then indirectly attacked Kerich during a meeting in Mombasa accusing him of disrespect and working with Sonko’s political enemies.

Yesterday, Kerich did not respond to calls for a comment about the allegations.

The Wednesday suspensions climaxed the chaotic and erratic rule that has defined Sonko’s administration.

He has sacked more than 500 officers, including top executives over claims of insubordination, corruption and disloyalty. He has reshuffled his cabinet more than eight times since he was elected in August 2017.

Early in January, Sonko suffered a huge blow when Janet Ouko bravely called it quits from his leadership.

In an interview with the Star at the time, Ouko said she had nothing against the governor but could not continue living under intimidation and fear.

Sonko subsequently linked Ouko with missing bursary funds at City Hall.

The governor also alleged she had colluded with cartels to operate an illegal account where Sh10 million in county funds were channelled.

In August 2018 he suspended Hitan Majevdia then CEC for Health and a former director Thomas Ogaro over what he claimed was laxity.

They were on the spot over lack of drugs and other medical supplies in hospitals. This was despite it being public that the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency had cut medical supply to all county hospitals over a debt of Sh234 million.

The same month, Sonko suspended John Ojwang from the urban planning department.

In 2007, he got to parliament as Makadara Member of Parliament. In 2013, he strongly came as a Nairobi County senator and in 2017, he jumped higher to clinch the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

From the trend, governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has not vied for the same seat twice. Will he try it for the first time in 2022? Well, what does his team Wanjiku campaign alongside Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria mean?

On Saturday, political analyst Herman Manyora said Governor Sonko can become a very strong candidate ahead of the 2022 polls.

He compared Sonko to United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Donald Trump, and Uganda opposition MP Bobi Wine.

“I know some people might think I am crazy. But as I speak, there are similar Presidents in the world, Prime Ministers. There’s Boris Johnson, there’s Donald Trump and there might soon be Bobi Wine. The conditions in this country can allow a Sonko to be president,” he said.

He urged Deputy President Dr William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga to be ready to face Sonko when times comes.

“And believe you me Raila Amollo Odinga, William Samoei Ruto you could have a serious competitor in the person of Mike Sonko come 2022,” said Manyora.

Nairobi County governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has responded to a Nairobi County resident Mr Philip Sogoti Chepsat barely hours after he had put an advert in Daily Nation paper urging Sonko to give him the deputy governor job.

However, Sonko did not give Mr Chepsat the job as many had anticipated.

In his response, Sonko maintained that he will keep his promise to the women of Nairobi County.

He said that he had promised to pick a woman as his deputy as soon as the legislation pending in Parliament on nomination and appointment of Deputy Governor is assented into law.

Through a long facebook post on Wednesday evening, Sonko thanked Chepsat for his expression of interest in serving the great people of Nairobi alongside him.

The post read,

DEAR MR. PHILIP SOGOTI CHEPSAT.

Thank you for your expression of interest in serving the great people of Nairobi alongside me as Deputy Governor. Thank you too for appreciating my commitment to openness and transparency.

My office received your earlier communications and we were in the process of writing you a formal regret because like I promised, I shall only be ready to fill the Deputy Governor position once the legislation pending in Parliament on nomination and appointment of Deputy Governor is assented into law.

It is worth of note that as a politician, I believe in keeping my promises to the electorate. And earlier, I committed myself to Nairobians that my nominee for Nairobi City County’s Next Deputy Governor shall be a woman.

Too bad you are not a woman because I intend to keep that promise to my women supporters at all costs because I believe in not only upholding the third gender rule but exceeding it. This is why half of Nairobi County executive members are women.

I wish you had indicated your professional background or work experience for my adminstration to know how better to assist you.

My appeal to you is not to give up on your dream to serve in leadership of Nairobi County but to keep checking up and applying as vacancies come up.

For example, I shall soon be sending home several nonperforming Members of County Executive Committee and Chief Officers who are sleeping on the job and you should be on the standby to apply when the County Public Service Board advertises to fill the position.

Otherwise I wish you all the best in your future endeavours as you continue to enjoy our services as a Nairobi voter and resident.

At Your Service,

Mike Mbuvi Sonko.
