Thugs who were aboard a tuk tuk on Monday night held a police boss at gunpoint in Mombasa town and robbed him of his firearm.

According to reports, Mombasa Urban Sub County Police Commander, George Bamba Kingi, was heading home in his private car when a Tuk tuk blocked him on the road.

The thugs are said to have forced officer Kingi to alight from his car, whereby one of the suspects held him at gunpoint and ordered him to surrender his firearm, a Jericho pistol.

The other two suspects stole the pistol, loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, that was holstered on his waist. The thugs then fled towards Likoni.

“A multi-agency team responded after the police boss raised alarm. The officers combed the area, but nothing has been recovered,” a police report stated.

County Regional Police Commander Manaseh Musyoka condemned the act noting that police officers were working round the clock to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

Further, he called upon Mombasa residents to come forth with any information regarding the incident, adding that there was a hefty reward for anyone who would assist the police in recovering the gun and capturing the suspects.

“The suspects, who were all armed, then ordered him to surrender, and since he feared for his life, he cooperated with them.”

“Anyone with information that can assist us to recover the gun to share the information in confidence and there is a reward for that.”

In the recent past, thugs have been devising nifty tactics in a bid to carry out their hatched scheme and evade justice.

From staging heists in wealthy neighbourhoods to robbing police officers, perpetrators are going to extra lengths in order to follow through with their plans.

Nyali constituency MP Mohamed Ali has clashed with governor Hassan Ali Joho over the mass testing for Covid-19 that kicked off in Mombasa on Saturday May 2, 2020.

A section of the residents of Mombasa boycotted the exercise, forcing governor Joho to lose temper on them.

Joho scolded the residents of Old Town for what he termed as evading coronavirus tests.

The furious governor expressed his disappointment that residents failed to avail themselves for the mass testing which the county had rolled to ascertain the spread of the deadly virus.

He further stated that once the residents will once more not avail themselves for the testing, they will be locked up in their houses.

Responding to Joho’s outburst on the Saturday night, the vocal journalist-turned politician opposed Joho’s words pointing out that it was not wise for the governor to ‘threaten’ the residents.

He went on to state that as coastal leaders, they ought to come up with a strategy to support the residents. Some of which he mentioned were; allowing health professionals to do their work and also giving scientists humble time to investigate the condition and offer advisory measures.

He further disclosed that most of the residents are reluctant in going for the tests since once confirmed positive, they are informed that quarantine and treatment costs are at their own costs.

He called off the governor for setting aside Ksh 700 Million shillings for fighting the pandemic.

He questioned the move on when parliament discussed such amounts and also went on to ask if the money is there, why are the residents forced to pay for the services.

He also opposed Joho’s idea on calling for a lock down in the county due to increase in number of the confirmed positive cases

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to take some of Deputy President William Ruto’s personal effects after locing him out of his official residence.

Reports by Daily Nation on Sunday indicated that Ruto was denied access to his official residence in Mombasa on Wednesday.

According to the local daily, Ruto arrived in Mombasa at midmorning on Wednesday and proceeded to attend to his scheduled business of the day.

In the evening, he was scheduled to spend the night at the newly-refurbished former Coast Provincial Commissioner’s official residence.

The house was converted to the DP’s official house in a bid to cut costs when the DP travels to the coast region.

In the evening, at around 4pm, he retreated to the residence, where he found staff packing his personal belongings, which had been lodged there earlier in the day in anticipation that he would spend the night there.

The DP was taken aback by the turn of events and, upon further inquiry, he was told that government staff had received instructions to remove Mr Ruto’s personal effects from the house.

Babu Owino now says that the DP can spend his nights in one of his hotels.

He says that President Kenyatta should not at any point be blamed over the incident that happened to Ruto in Mombasa.

“Dp can stay at one of his many hotels in kenya worth billions of shillings which was bought with stolen money if he feels locked out of his official residence. Lets not blame President Uhuru at a time when he’s dealing with a thief. May the President take his clothes and shoes too,” posted the youthful MP.

Eliud Kipchoge, the greatest marathoner on the planet, has just been conferred with the second highest honour granted to civilians in Kenya.

President Uhuru Kenyatta conferred the honour, Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart, on Kipchoge on Sunday during Mashujaa Day celebrations held in Mombasa.

Kipchoge received the honour for his accomplishment of running a marathon in under two hours in Vienna, a feat thought unthinkable and nearly impossible, and in the process inspiring not just Kenyans, but the whole world.

But what are Kenya’s national heroes entitled to?

Under the National Heroes Act which was passed by Parliament in 2014 — but yet to come into force — Kipchoge would be entitled to the following benefits.

But Kipchoge may not enjoy the benefits listed below because the EGH honour he has received is under the National Honours Act.

In addition to a Certificate Of Declaration of Hero, Section 25 of the National Heroes Act says that a person recognized as a hero would be entitled to:

  • Invitations to national and community functions as a state guest.
  • Having cultural festivals, concerts, exhibitions and sports events organized in their honour.
  • Having towns, institutions, open parks in urban areas, roads, streets, estates, stamps and notable landmarks named after them.
  • The award of medals, insignia, commendations, certificates and such other commemorative as may be determined by the Council from time to time.
  • The issuance of such postage stamps, scarves, mementos, utensils, apparel and artifacts as may be determined by the Council from time to time.
  • The publication of books depicting their respective roles in the country’s history or the social life of the society, which shall be part of the educational curriculum or being accorded financial assistance from the National Heroes Fund where their economic circumstances warrant such assistance.
  • The government may also give national heroes who are in need of assistance the following, though they are not entitled to them: health care services, housing, food, access to clean and safe water, social security, and free education for their dependants of school-going age up to tertiary level.

What are those with national honours entitled to?

The National Honours Act does not specify any benefits but in Section 14(2) it says that the Cabinet Secretary may make regulations to “prescribe the privileges or benefits that shall attach to a national honour.”

Kenya Ferry Services has ordered for the closure of the Likoni Ferry Channel for two hours as operations to retrieve the bodies of a mother and her daughter who drowned at the Indian Ocean enters day two.

The channel is to remain closed from 9:00 am to 11:00am.

Locals have flocked the Likoni Ferry in Mombasa ahead of closure of the channel.

The family of 35-year-old Mariam Kigenda and her 4-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu, have been forced to hire private divers to retrieve their loved ones’ bodies after the exercise was called off Tuesday evening.

The State, through key agencies, including the Kenya Ferry Services and the Kenya Ports Authority, had launched a search for the bodies on Monday, a day after Kigenda and her child plunged into the sea while aboard their vehicle, which slid off MV Harambee Ferry.

Two days later, the bodies are yet to be removed from the waterbody.

Transportation of passengers across the Likoni channel was Tuesday afternoon temporarily halted to allow the Kenya Navy, Kenya Ports Authority officers and Kenya Coast Guard Services officers to get into the water and retrieve the victims’ bodies.

The temporary closure of the channel lasted over 30 minutes.

The Kenya Ferry Services managing director, Bakari Gowa, said Mariam’s body and that of her child, Amanda Mutheu, were spotted 75 feet (23 meters) under the water surface.

The vehicle which they were travelling in, a Toyota Isis, was located 173 feet (53 meters) below the water surface.

And following the unsuccessful operation by the State to remove the bodies from the sea, Kigenda’s family now says they have “lost hope” in government agencies, and have sought help from private divers known to have successfully undertaken a similar exercise.

By Tuesday evening, Kigenda’s family had already paid Ksh100, 000 to a private company – Kenya Rescue Divers – to undertake the exercise, said the family spokesperson Luka Mbati.

Senior Counsel Ahmednsir Abdullahi has said that the ruling Jubilee party killed Mombasa’s economy because they hated governor Hassan Ali Joho.

His statement follows the demonstrations that were staged in Mombasa on Monday following what the residents argued that Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has spelled doom on the region’s economy.

With the coming of SGR, all cargo is supposed to be transported by the railway line, denying job opportunities to road transporters.

Ahmednasir now claims that since Jubilee is now in love with governor Joho due to the handshake between Prrsident Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition chief Raila Odinga, a marshal plan should be done to revive Mombasa’s economy.

The senior counsel further says that the plan should be named Sultan Joho plan.

“JUBILEE KILLED Mombasa because once upon a time they hated/didn’t like Sultan @HassanAliJoho. Now that JUBILEE is MADLY in LOVE with Sultan Joho, please do a Marshall plan to revive Mombasa….call it SULTAN JOHO Plan,” he posted.

The demonstration, which started at Makupa round about to Changamwe round about in Mombasa west, caused a jam between the Island and Mombasa mainland.

The demonstrators carrying placards castigating Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority officials and a minister walked over 10 kilometres as they sang songs against the government.

As the demonstration continued, the truck drivers hooted as a sign of solidarity while road construction workers also abandoned their works to cheer demonstrators.
