Mwai Kibaki

There was drama in Othaya during the funeral service of the late third President of Kenya Emilio Mwai Kibaki when a mourner tried to run towards the podium while Deputy President William Ruto was giving his speech.

A video that has since gone viral shows a woman running from where the mourners had been seated at a tent trying to make her way to the podium.

However, she was stopped by the security and whisked away before she could make her way to the podium where DP Ruto was standing.

At the time, the second in command had paused his speech to acknowledge leaders who were present at the event but had not received a chance to address the mourners.

This is not however the first drama to be witnessed at Kibaki’s funeral.

The man who caused drama outside Parliament buildings on Tuesday claiming to be the late President Mwai Kibaki’s grandson on Friday begged to address the nation during the funeral service held at Nyayo Stadium.

It is not clear yet how Allan Makhana breached security and got to the podium as Archbishop Anthony Muheria made an announcement.

He could be heard whispering that he needed just two minutes to make ‘a few remarks’.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has his own style of mourning high-profile people in the country. Or is he?

Well, if you reflect at all the funerals of the high-profile people Kenya has lost, you must have noticed a black flywhisk that the former Prime Minister carries around and waves in the air several times whenever he is viewing the deceased’s body.

When former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa died in the year 2003, Raila arrived in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County donning luo traditional regalia, armed with a spear and his magical black flywhisk.

In 2014 during the funeral of the then Homa Bay County Senator Otieno Kajwang, Raila lifted his black flywhisk.

We saw it again in 2020 during the funeral of the second president of the Republic of Kenya Mzee Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.

When Raila arrived at Parliament buildings to view the late President Moi’s body, he ceremoniously pulled out his black flywhisk, removed his cowboy hat and looked at the body for a few seconds before waving the flywhisk in slow motion six times over the body.

And have you seen the same happen during the late President Emilio Mwai Kibaki’s funeral? Well, when the ODM leader arrived at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday April 29, 2022, he was carrying his black flywhisk.

On Saturday April 30, 2022, Raila landed at Othaya Boys High School in Othaya in the company of his wife Mama Ida Odinga while carrying the black flywhisk in his hands.

Just before they left Othaya Boys High School for the funeral service of the late President Mwai Kibaki at his Othaya home, Raila waved his flywhisk in the air befotre entering his car that took him to the event.

But what is the meaning of all these?

According to the Luo Council of Elders chairperson Willis Otondi who spoke to the media in 2020 during the funeral of the late President Moi, the whisk is only given to selected elders in the community.

Known is Orengo in the luo language, the whisk is a symbol of peace and whenver Raila lifts it at the funerals, he calls for calmness.

The elder explained that the orengo is a status symbol and only a certain cadre of elders are allowed to carry it.

For instance, the whisk is believed to have magical power that is transferred to whoever inherits it.

Whenever it is lifted like Raila does at the funerals of the high-profile people, it shows respect from the entire generation.

The late Otieno Kajwang also used to carry the whisk around and it was believed to be having some magical powers.

Former President Mwai Kibaki has arrived at Parliament buildings to pay his last rest to his predecessor Mzee Daniel Moi.

Kibaki is among hundreds of Kenyans at Parliament buildings viewing the body of the second head of state Mzee Moi.

However, media has been barred from showing Kibaki’s photos or videos while at the Parliament buildings.

No civilian , police or parliamentary orderlies have been allowed in as Mwai Kibaki pays his last respect to the fallen icon.

The body of the late former President arrived at Parliament Buildings from Lee Funeral Home on Sunday morning for the second day of public viewing.

Kibaki bounced back to the limelight on Saturday but only to condole with the family of his predecessor, who died on Tuesday.

In video footage shared on social media, the retired President was recorded signing a condolences book at his Muthaiga home on Saturday.

The development came after Kenyans on social media raised eyebrows on the whereabouts of the former president as key Government officials led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto trooped Parliament building to view the body of the late Moi.

Other dignitaries yet to view  Moi’s body include the ODM leader Raila Odinga who was sent to represent President Uhuru at AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but is expected to view the body today.

The late Moi’s body is set to be laid in state at Parliament building for three days beginning on Saturday to Monday.

His funeral service is slated for Tuesday at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi.

His remains will be interred at his Kabarak home beside his late wife, Lena Moi.

Kibaki who served as Moi’s Vice President for ten years from 1978 to 1988 had a rocky relationship with his boss leading to his sacking.

He also held cabinet ministerial positions in the Kenyatta and Moi governments, including time as minister for Finance (1969–1981) under Kenyatta, and Minister for Home Affairs (1982–1988) and Minister for Health (1988–1991) under Moi.

Kibaki served as an opposition Member of Parliament from 1992 to 2002. He unsuccessfully vied for the presidency in 1992 and 1997.

He served as the Leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament from 1998 to 2002. In the 2002 presidential election, he was elected as President of Kenya.

Former President Mwai Kibaki is admitted at The Nairobi Hospital.

According to reports by a local daily, Kibaki was admitted to hospital on Monday after he complained of pain on his knee.

Kibaki, 88, was in London last week for a series of medical checks where his knee was also examined. It is understood that Mzee’s knee has been paining.

“Mzee was taken to the hospital for some check-ups but we are praying for him,” a family source was quoted by the local daily.

But Kibaki’s Private Secretary Ngari Gituku vehemently denied that the ex-President was admitted. He described him as “cheerful and alert.”

Gituku said The Nairobi Hospital is one of the facilities the former Head of State occasionally visits for medical attention.

“It could be one of the medical facilities where he occasionally seek medical attention. That doesn’t mean he is there,” Gituku was quoted.

Kibaki’s predecessor Daniel Moi is also undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
