Deputy President William Ruto has reaped big after the Mwangi Kiunjuri-led The Service Party (TSP) Deputy Secretary General, Njogu Barua ditched the party for United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking in his Gichugu home on Sunday, September 12, Barua announced that he has relinquished his position in the TSP party to join DP Ruto’s UDA.

“I have been the Deputy Secretary General of TSP. We have agreed and have resolved that with immediate effect, I cease being the Deputy Secretary General of The Service Party,” the defecting DSG stated.

The former Gichugu Member of Parliament stated that he would be seeking to recapture the seat on a UDA party ticket.

Barua explained that the decision was guided by the residents of Gichugu constituency.

He stated that the people had already made a decision that Ruto was their preferred candidate for the 2022 General Election.

“Their preferred presidential candidate is none other than William Samoei Arap Ruto,” he reiterated.

The outgoing DSG added that he would not be distracted by anybody, and he and other leaders would seek political positions, especially parliamentary seats through the DP-affiliated outfit.

Barua also rubbished the meeting by Kiunjuri, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, stating that it had been overtaken by events.

Kiunjuri, who was an ally of the Deputy President, fell out with the former over differences in political opinion.

The former CS openly rejected the idea of other parties in the Mt Kenya region dissolving and joining UDA.

Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri’s woes seem to be not yet over after getting axed by president Uhuru Kenyatta over incompetence.

An ongoing investigations into alleged illegal payment of Sh1.8 billion for maize supply got Kiunjuri grilled by EACC officers on Monday.

He was summoned to the EACC offices where he spent the better part of Monday afternoon responding to the questions from detectives on the payment to Commodity House Limited on June 28, 2019 for maize supply to National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB).

According to reports by The Standard, Kiunjuri was summoned through a letter dated January 14 – on the same day he was fired by President Uhuru Kenyatta and replaced by Peter Munya.

The letter states the commission is investigating allegations of corruption in the supply and delivery of white maize in the financial year 2016/2017 which was procured by the ministry.

Outgoing agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has broken his silence after facing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s axe on Tuesday morning.

President Kenyatta during State of the Nation address in Mombasa made a surprise cabinet reshuffle replacing Kiunjuri with Peter Munya who moved in from Trade and Industrialization ministry.

Kiunjuri however during a live presser at Serena Hotel in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon said that he feels relieved after the sacking.

He said the President’s decision has taken him by no surprise.

Kiunjuri says he has endured lots of humiliation with only God and his immediate family knowing how it made him feel.

He noted that he had given the best in his assignment.

“The President’s decision has taken me by no surprise, I thank God, I feel relieved. I have endured lots of humiliation, only God and my family know this. I have given my best in my assignment, I leave with my head high,” he said.

He further noted that he now has free time to do other things.

Kiunjuri cited that President Kenyatta had appointed him without consulting anyone and that he does not need any consultation to relieve him of duties.

“I now have free time to do other things, I am not going anywhere. The president appointed me without consulting anyone, he has relieved me of my duties, he does not need any consultation,” he added.

NASA CEO Norman Magaya has slammed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri over his latest remarks on locusts that have invaded most parts of the country.

Kiunjuri on Friday told Kenyans to start taking pictures of suspected insects and post them on social media so that his ministry can confirm to them whether it is a locust or not.

Kiunjuri stated that once the photos have been positively identified the government would take appropriate action.

While commenting on the remarks, Mr Magaya said that Kiunjuri does not qualify to be in the office.

He noted that unless Kiunjuri has President Uhuru Kenyatta’s nudes, no justification exists for him to be a CS, citing that incompetency is written allover the Agriculture CS.

“Unless this man has Uhuru’s nudes …. no justification exists for him to be CS !!! Incompetency is written allover Kiunjuri, ” posted Magaya.

A preliminary report says that the desert locust invasion in northern Kenya is rapidly spreading.

The report by Mandera County’s Department of Agriculture indicates that an estimated 12,000 square kilometres of landmass had been infested in the county alone since the invasion began barely two weeks ago.

The report released on Tuesday paints a picture of destruction that threatens food security in a region that recently experienced drought and floods in quick succession.

The report shows that barely a day after the locusts were first spotted on December 28 at three sites in the county, they had spread to 20 other sites.

Locusts invaded Mandera, Marsabit and Wajir counties two weeks ago, prompting an outcry from local leaders and residents.

Desperate to deal with the invasion, residents have been banging on utensils and other metallic items, and honking motorbike horns to scare away the locusts.

Police officers have also been seen blowing whistles to scare them away.

Earlier, they had been instructed to shoot and kill the locusts.

Mt Kenya Council of Elders has asked Deputy President Dr William Ruto to pick Agriculture cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri as his running mate ahead of 2022 President Uhuru Kenyatta succession battle.

The council through its chairman Paul Mwati said Kiunjuri has all it takes to be the running mate of Ruto.

“Kiunjuri is no doubt a career and seasoned politician who joined active politics in 1997 as a MP for Laikipia East at a tender age of 30 years and for all these years, he has made a name on Kenya’s political landscape as a fearless and candid speaking political leader,” noted Mt Kenya Council of Elders boss, Mwati.

He advised Uhuru Kenyatta to begin grooming a spokesman for Mt Kenya communities and in this case, Kiunjuri is the first among equals because in terms of leadership and experience, he is shoulder and head above many other politicians in the region.

Mwati added that if the president fails to pick a spokesman for the communities in Mt Kenya region at the right time, there is a likelihood he might leave them as political orphanage upon his retirement after the 2022 transitional election cycle.

Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri is set to appear before Parliament today (Wednesday) to explain why he is pushing for maize importation when all indications suggest the country has enough stock.

The MPs claim Kiunjuri’s importation plans are suspect and are meant to enrich maize cartels at the expense of millions of farmers across the country.

Millers are on the verge of running out of maize as the dispute between the ministry, the Strategic Food Reserve, millers and the National Cereals and Produce Board persists.

About 50 of the country’s 200 millers have closed because of the maize shortage, according to the United Grain Millers Association.

The shortage has increased prices for a bag of maize and also added to flour and feed costs.

Kenya is currently facing a shortfall in domestic maize supply forcing it to import the commodity which is the dominant staple food for the majority of Kenyans.

The country consumes between 1.5 and 1.7 million bags of maize in a month.

The legislators say that there is no justification for the imports and that the argument of an impending shortage is a lie.

Through the agriculture committee, the MPs told Mwangi Kiunjuri to drop the push because the hard times are over.

The committee cited statistics from the Strategic Grain Reserve which shows the country can do without the maize importation.

Committee chairman Adan Haji (Mandera South) said the opening stock at the NCPB in May before the government began to sell to millers was 4.2 million bags of maize.

Of this,  1.7 million bags were sanctioned to be sold to millers in order to reduce the price of maize flour on the shelves.

“That leaves 2.5 million bags which are in stock, there is a cabinet memo that is awaiting approval of a further 1.7 million to be released to millers this month, which means in July the millers are covered, there is no reason to see prices hiked,” Haji said.

He added, “We are left with August, and if you look at the ministry’s own statistics, we are talking of 1.5 to 1.7 million bags per month required by all millers in the country, we just need another 1.7 million bags to cover us in August. We are now waiting for harvests.”

MPs Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo), Florence Mutua (Busia MP), Justus Murunga (Matungu), Silvanus Osoro (South Mugirango) and Daniel Tuitoek (Magotio) who sit in the committee read mischief in the planned importation.

“Someone somewhere is raising alarm for no reason. This is a clever way to invite cartels and businesspeople to import maize,” Wangwe who is also the vice-chair of the committee said.

Mutua questioned the necessity of the importing expensive maize when local farmers were offered a lower price.

“Why does he want to import maize at Sh5,000 and they cannot buy local maize at Sh3,200? We know it is cartels who want to do the importation,” Mutua said.

The MPs are expected to tell Kiujuri off of the importation plans.

“In South, Rift maize is starting to get ready, we want to ask the CS to stop the process of importation of maize,” Tuitoek said.

The MPs’ views are in line with the position taken by Strategic Food Reserve Trust Fund – a state agency domiciled in Kiunjuri’s docket – which has differed with the CS over the matter.

The Fund’s chairperson Noah Wekesa has maintained that the maize in the reserves, together with those from expected harvests will be enough for the country.
