Embattled Governor Mike Sonko has today appointed Ms. Anne Kananu Mwenda as Nairobi Deputy Governor.
Until her nomination, Ms Mwenda was Chief Officer Disaster Management Nairobi County.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, Governor Sonko says that the move is in response to the Supreme Court’s advisory regarding the nomination of a Deputy Governor dated March 2018.
Sonko notes that there was a legal vacuum then, which has not been cured to this day, to provide for a clear framework for the replacement of a Deputy Governor.
Almost a year ago (Jan 13 2019), the husband to Deputy Governor-designate Ann Kananu Mwenda, Mr. Philip Njiru Muthathai died in a road accident.
However, DPP Noordin Haji has termed a decision by Sonko to nominate a deputy unacceptable.
He on Monday said the governor was in violation of his bail terms hence his action was null and void.
” The court was clear on what Sonko cannot do. To purport to have power to name a deputy while his case is still on is a violation of the bail terms given to him. We will move to court,” warned Haji.
