COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has broken his silence moments after the Supreme Court of Kenya upheld President elect William Ruto’s Win.

The Chief Justice Martha Koome-led court on Monday afternoon ruled that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had conducted a free, fair and verifiable election.

Atwoli has been heard confidently saying that Ruto will not become the president of the republic of Kenya.

The COTU boss has maintained his remarks during the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition campaigns, and before that, he had even been heard saying that Ruto will not be on the ballot.

However, after the Supreme Court verdict, Atwoli took to his official social media handles and congratulated President elect Ruto.

Atwoli noted that COTU had unanimously agreed during their executive board meeting that they would thank and Congratulate the victor.

He went ahead to appeal to the workers and Kenyans at large to remain peaceful after the Supreme Court verdict.

“During COTU (K) Executive Board meeting on 17th August, we resolved THAT immediately after the Supreme Court judgement, we must thank and congratulate the victor. Consequently, we congratulate President William Ruto. We appeal to workers and Kenyans in general to remain peaceful,” Atwoli tweeted.

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition allied leaders have expressed their confidence ahead of the election petition that will be filed at the Supreme Court on Monday.

The Azimio allies drawn from the Western Kenya region have maintained that they will fight until their presidential candidate Raila Odinga becomes the 5th president of Kenya.

The coalition is set to challenge the election of William Ruto who was declared the president-elect in the just concluded General election.

While condoling with the family of Nairobi senator elect Edwin Sifuna who lost his grandmother Lukelesia Nafula Sifuna, Godfrey Osotsi, the senator elect for Vihiga County on ODM party ticket said that they have gathered enough evidence which they will use against the Kenya Kwanza team.

Osotsi went ahead to ask for electoral justice saying that the voters’ decisions must be respected.

He faulted the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati for going against the will of the people.

“It cannot be always that when Kenyans demonstrate their democratic right by voting, some few individuals like Chebukati ends up deciding for them who to be their president and that’s why we as AZIMIO One Kenya we are going to seek for a solution constitutionally to tackle those who were involved in this malicious act,” he said.

He went ahead to call out the president elect for going against the law by accepting  other political parties from AZIMIO One Kenya  to join Kenya Kwanza saying that he is manipulating them with money to join him and so risking losing  their seats according to the political parties act that says that they are not supposed to do so.

“I want to tell the deputy president to slow down, he is yet to be the president and he might not be because I believe that the Supreme Court is going to nullify it. We have enough evidence to show that the tallying process was corrupt and so where we stand as a country, we are yet to know who the president is,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by Edwin Sifuna who said that the decision now lies in the hands of the supreme court and as AZIMIO One Kenya, they have prepared adequately and they are sure that justice will prevail.

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga has suffered a major setback after the United Democratic Movement (UDM) abandoned him for President-elect William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza outfit.

UDM party’s leadership on Thursday August 18, met the President-elect at the Deputy President’s official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

Image

The party has eight Members of National Assembly, two Governors and two Senators who were elected in the just concluded general election.

However, the Mandera Senator-elect Ali Roba-led party is still tied to Azimio-One Kenya coalition, legally.

“We salute the United Democratic Movement (UDM) leadership for abandoning Azimio La Umoja and joining Kenya Kwanza,” President-elect William Ruto tweeted.

The UDM party had joined Azimio in February this year, complicating Ruto’s chances taking control of the North-Eastern region.

However, UDM’s ditching Azimio for Kenya Kwanza has added to the growing list of the Members of the National Assembly from the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

With the Senate split 24-23 in favour of Kenya Kwanza, the battle for the control of the 349-member National Assembly, where Azimio boasts a 162-159 advantage, has boiled down to the 12 independent MPs, 10 of whom have already joined Kenya Kwanza.

Kenya Kwanza now controls the National Assembly with about 177 Members as at now.

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition candidate Raila Odinga is leading the presidential race ahead of UDA’s William Ruto.

This is according to the official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from 69 constituencies as at Saturday 1500hrs.

With over 26% of votes counted, Raila had 54% and Ruto had 45%. The results are being displayed on a large screen at the IEBC presidential tallying centre at the Bomas of Kenya.

Kenya took to the ballot on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 to elect new leaders both at the local and National level.

Raila and Ruto are in a tight race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta who has finished his two-term limit.

Kenyans have been anxiously waiting for the announcement of the official presidential results. The process has, however, been slow since all the 34A and 34B forms have been subjected to a verification process before any announcement is made.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati who is also the presidential returning officer blamed party agents, who are allowed to scrutinise results forms before they are added to the final tally.

The media started tallying the provisional results after the vote on Tuesday evening which showed Raila and Ruto neck to neck in a tight race.

The tallying of the provisional results, however, stopped after the IEBC started receiving results from constituency level, with Webuye East constituency in Bungoma County having been the first one to submit the results.

The provisional results showed small margins between Raila and Ruto.

Azimio la Umoja on Saturday held an inaugural conference of inspiration, congratulations and challenge for all its elected members.

They stopped just short of saying the ‘sacred’ words reserved for the IEBC, the name of the next president of the Republic of Kenya.

The meeting at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre was  chaired by running mate Martha Karua who all but said Azimio-One-Kenya had won.

She said they had “the numbers” in Parliament and cited victories in numbers of governors and other seats won by the alliance and announced by the IEBC .

Azimio has its own tallying centre, as does Ruto, UDA flagbearer and Kenya Kwanza leader.

Participants wore Azimio blue as an ecstatic crowd gathered outside KICC.

The tallying of the presidential results is ongoing at the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi with the IEBC required to declare the winner before Tuesday, August 16, 2022.

Ambassador Simon Nabukwesi, the permanent Secretary, state Department for University education and research has rubbished the claims linking him to the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

In a statement that was made by Rogers Simiyu, the Kimilili sub-county youth chairman, he said that Nabukwesi is not in any way engaged in Kenya Kwanza politics and people should stop spreading what he termed as fake news.

“We appreciate that we are in the campaign period and everyone wishes to be endorsed or supported but we take offence because the PS has endorsed the AZIMIO One Kenya and no one else, ”he said.

He went ahead to ask the residents of Bungoma to treat the propaganda being peddled by our mongers with the contempt that it deserves.

Rogers said that it is a malicious attack aimed at disorienting the PS from discharging the duties the hat he was mandated by the President to the people of Bungoma and Kenya at large.

“I have spoken to Amb. Nabukwesi and he has reaffirmed his commitment to President Uhuru Kenyatta and focused on what he was sent to do and so many empty talks should be ignored,” he insisted.

He noted that Amb. Nabukwesi is focused on ensuring quality education for the Kenyan child.

He called upon the parents and guardians who are yet to take their children to school to do so, saying that it will help in future when opportunities arise instead of being misused or spreading propaganda, causing chaos and destruction by politicians.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has his own style of mourning high-profile people in the country. Or is he?

Well, if you reflect at all the funerals of the high-profile people Kenya has lost, you must have noticed a black flywhisk that the former Prime Minister carries around and waves in the air several times whenever he is viewing the deceased’s body.

When former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa died in the year 2003, Raila arrived in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County donning luo traditional regalia, armed with a spear and his magical black flywhisk.

In 2014 during the funeral of the then Homa Bay County Senator Otieno Kajwang, Raila lifted his black flywhisk.

We saw it again in 2020 during the funeral of the second president of the Republic of Kenya Mzee Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.

When Raila arrived at Parliament buildings to view the late President Moi’s body, he ceremoniously pulled out his black flywhisk, removed his cowboy hat and looked at the body for a few seconds before waving the flywhisk in slow motion six times over the body.

And have you seen the same happen during the late President Emilio Mwai Kibaki’s funeral? Well, when the ODM leader arrived at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday April 29, 2022, he was carrying his black flywhisk.

On Saturday April 30, 2022, Raila landed at Othaya Boys High School in Othaya in the company of his wife Mama Ida Odinga while carrying the black flywhisk in his hands.

Just before they left Othaya Boys High School for the funeral service of the late President Mwai Kibaki at his Othaya home, Raila waved his flywhisk in the air befotre entering his car that took him to the event.

But what is the meaning of all these?

According to the Luo Council of Elders chairperson Willis Otondi who spoke to the media in 2020 during the funeral of the late President Moi, the whisk is only given to selected elders in the community.

Known is Orengo in the luo language, the whisk is a symbol of peace and whenver Raila lifts it at the funerals, he calls for calmness.

The elder explained that the orengo is a status symbol and only a certain cadre of elders are allowed to carry it.

For instance, the whisk is believed to have magical power that is transferred to whoever inherits it.

Whenever it is lifted like Raila does at the funerals of the high-profile people, it shows respect from the entire generation.

The late Otieno Kajwang also used to carry the whisk around and it was believed to be having some magical powers.

A recent political move by ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga has faced heavy opposition from the public and further proved why he is the wrong candidate ahead of the August 9th general polls.

In the latest turn of events, the former Prime Minister suffered a major embarrassment after a section of the electorate in his Nyanza backyard rejected calls to adopt a six-piece voting pattern for ODM candidates in all 5 positions of the MCA, MP, Woman Rep, Senator, and Governor seat.

Speaking at Nyasore Village in Rachuonyo East Sub County during the burial of the late Ambassador of Kenya to Qatar Paddy Ahenda on Monday, Raila claimed that the mode of voting would help enhance the formation of a stable government in the unlikely situation he is elected president.

“While I have committed to take the bull by its horns at the national level, I am asking you to vote six-piece for our ODM candidates, from the MCA seats, to the presidency come the General Election, for us to have the required strength,” said the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance presidential aspirant.

According to him, those who are seeking alternative parties or going independent after defeat in nominations are ‘enemies of the people’ out to divide the region.

But moments later, his controversial remarks provoked reactions that painted a rather harsh reality on the ground.

As soon as the story was picked up by local media, voters from all corners of the country – including some from his own support base – took to social media to protest the comments made by the veteran politician struggling through his fifth bid for the ever-elusive presidency.

From some of the responses featured below, netizens took turns in dismissing the skewed tactic that calls for one to ignore the suitability or otherwise of candidates or how they got their respective party tickets, and simply vote for the party because the cabal at the helm has declared so.

A majority of those who aired their views described it as a greedy move only aimed at protecting his personal selfish interests.

Others urged him to give up on his mistaken cause and prepare for what is predicted as the imminent downfall of the Odinga’s dynasty just as is happening to the Moi’s in Kalenjin land years after their catastrophic 24-year regime.

“This year the Kenyatta family is wondering why Kikuyus have rejected them. I pray that by 2027, Luos will reject the Odinga family just as the Moi family is quickly being forgotten in Kalenjin land,” one wrote.

“Any average Kenyan will know that this is a politician trying to greedily secure his interests…. For your interest guys, vote in personalities and not parties,” another added.

As things seem to turn out, political parties and politicians that favour the so-called 6-piece voting pattern might soon be licking their political wounds unless they learn to embrace free, fair, transparent and accountable nomination exercises.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen major political parties in the country like Jubilee and ODM staying intent on locking in politicians in regions where they dominate so that such people are denied an opportunity for fair competition against preferred candidates.

The parties and their leaders are running scared that newcomers might unseat seasoned politicians most of whom no longer make sense to young voters.

This when contrasted with DP Ruto’s non interference in primaries, young and undecided voters seem to be appreciating the UDA Party for giving a fair opportunity to the voters to decide who should be their candidate by not imposing friends and family on them.

This is particularly true within the ODM regions of Nyanza and elsewhere where newly registered voters do not necessarily appreciate a candidate being forced on them just because they belong to a political outfit when these candidates have no progressive developmental agenda for their constituencies.

Voters want development.

Voters don’t care why the regions were not favoured in the past, they care about the present and future.

Voters will see performance of the candidates and would look at their vision.

Just days after businessman Suleiman Shahbal bowed out of the Mombasa gubernatorial race, details of how President Uhuru’s hand played a role in the decision have emerged.

Shahbal last week shocked many when he announced that he had dropped his governor bid in support of Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.

While making the announcement, he said that he had reached the decision after thoughtful consideration of the needs and aspirations of the people of Mombasa, long deliberations with ODM party leader Raila Odinga and advice from the chair of Azimio la Umoja Coalition, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Details have, however, emerged that Shahbal had rejected calls to step down in favor of Abdulswamad.

This is even after Raila made several attempts to convince him, including chairing a meeting with him in Nairobi.

According to sources that spoke to one of the leading local dailies, Raila made a phone call to President Kenyatta to seek his intervention.

It is President Kenyatta together with Raila who then reportedly told Shahbal that his hardline stance had created divisions among ODM supporters.

They urged him to step down given that three opinion polls had shown Nassir was ahead.

Shahbal found himself between the sitting president and the possibly incoming president, leaving him with no option.

Meanwhile, Shahbal has accepted an offer to join Raila’s Presidential campaign team.

Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga has asked president Uhuru Kenyatta to address the nation over the rising cost of living.

According to the lawmaker, the recently-read national budget dies not consider the struggling Kenyans.

The 2022/2023 budget proposal was delivered on 7th of April 2022 by Treasurer cabinet secretary Ukuru Yattani, coming out earlier than the usual dates of June.

Mwambu, during a public engagement with the residents of Siboti ward in Bumula constituency said Kenyans are suffering but it doesn’t seem to ring a bell to the president to come out and address the nation over the same and give a way forward over the ailing state of the economy.

“The president has kept quiet over the recent reading of the budget yet it has raised a mixed reaction among Kenyans, he needs to come out and say something on it because we can’t continue operating like this as a country,” he said.

He went ahead to say that President Kenyatta and his alleged project, the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya flag bearer Raila Odinga do not relate to the problems of the common Wananchi.

Mwambu went ahead to drum up support for his UDA party boss William Ruto saying that he is the real hustler and can relate to each and every problem.

The quick-witted law maker went ahead to call out the Bungoma county boss Wycliffe Wangamati over his empty promises after he failed to deliver the promise of drilling water in the wards which has resulted in water shortages in Bungoma county.

Mabonga further asked the residents to vote for the leaders who can deliver and not those who come with lies and not receipts.

He, however, asked his opponent Jack Wamboka to stop causing chaos while seeking support from the residents saying that politics should not always involve chaos and insults, and should instead let the residents decide saying that for him he knows that he will beat him hands down.

Bumula member of parliament Mwambu Mabonga has asked Ministry of Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugine Wamalwa to stop misleading the Luhya community.

According to Mwambu, Wamalwa puts his interest first more than the people of Bungoma and so he should let the people choose the leader of their choice.

While addressing the residents at Lwanja in Bumula constituency, Mwambu said that if at all Eugine had the interest of the people of Bungoma at heart then he would have fought hard to even have the fertilizer’s prices lowered.

This comes after the DAP-K party held a similar meeting in the same constituency recently drumming up support for Azimio La Umoja coalition whose presidential candidate is ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Mabonga lashed out at the Azimio allies saying that instead of dedicating themselves in improving the living standards of their own people, they are busy moving around and using the government resources to form many political parties to satisfy their own interests.

“Azimio team was here last week and instead of campaigning and telling the people what they have in store for them, they are busy insulting me. That shows how confused they are, and they should get their priorities right,” he said.

Mabonga went ahead to lament on how the government is blackmailing the Kenya Kwanza alliance supporters forcing them to pull their weight behind Azimio.

This comes after Sirisia MP John Waluke ditching UDA for the Jubilee party which is allied to Azimio.

The first term MP went further to campaign for Ruto and the entire UDA team saying that once they take over the government, they will budget 100 million shillings to the struggling residents so they can relate to the problems that happen.

His sentiments were echoed by women rep aspirant Nancy Kibaba who recently ditched AZIMIO for UDA saying that it is a movement with no agenda.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has apologised over his ‘madoadoa’ statement that he made ni Wajir County on Wednesday.

Speaking on Friday during his tour of Kisumu County, Raila clarified his statement that has caused mixed reactions from Kenyans, claiming that he meant voters shouldn’t elect non-Azimio La Umoja leaders.

The former Prime Minister said no Kenyan should be discriminated based on ethnicity.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) had earlier today summoned Raila over the remarks that were deemed to have fuelled up ethnic tensions ahead of the August polls.

Odinga made the utterances on March 9, 2022 when he took his Azimio la Umoja campaigns to Wajir County as he continues to drum up support for his presidential bid.

“In his remarks, he mentioned the term ‘Madoadoa’ which is considered a hate speech term in Kenya,” NCIC’s Chairman Samuel Kobia said in a statement.

Kobia added that the commission, under his watch, will continue to advocate for good relations, harmony and peaceful co-existence of persons of different ethnic and racial communities while discouraging ethnic discrimination in the August General elections.

In a reaction to NCIC summon, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen raised questions in the manner in which the ODM leader’s case is being handled.

Murkomen now wants the DCI to immediately arrest Raila and put him in custody.

Murkomen in a tweet appeared to suggest that Raila should be treated the same way as Meru Senator Mithika Linturi who was arrested and arraigned for his ‘madoadoa’ remark he made in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu.

At the same time, he poked holes in the NCIC letter and questioned when he will present himself for the summon.

Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula has sent a piece of advice to Wiper Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Through his official Twitter account, the Bungoma senator who is also a Kenya Kwanza Alliance co-principal told Kalonzo not to allow political turncoats to shape his destiny.

Wetang’ula advised the former Vice President to think carefully before entering any coaltion deal with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

He cited the history of betrayal and deceit, plus the arrogance being displayed as reasons why Kalonzo should turn down any calls for him to board the Azimio La Umoja train.

“My dear brother and friend Vp Kalonzo don’t allow political turncoats to shape your destiny. With the history of betrayal and deceit, plus the arrogance being displayed, think carefully before you enter the tent,” tweeted Wetang’ula.

Kalonzo has remained indecisive on whether to go alone, join Deputy President William Ruto’s side or Raila’s side.

Wetang’ula’s advice comes just hours after Kalonzo hosted his OKA counterpart Gideon Moi and Jimmy Kibaki who is the party leader of the New Democrats Party.

Kanu party leader Gideon Moi earlier today denied the media reports that the party was planning to ditch One Kenya Alliance (OKA) for Azimio la Umoja.

In a statement, the Kanu chairman said the party is firmly in OKA.

He has further said that OKA was united as a coalition, “and we have taken a common position that our talks with the Azimio and any other parties, must be structured, open and honest if we are to make progress.”

Gideon Moi has said that sentiments by Party Secretary-General Nick Salat, including the declaration that the party will attend the Azimio coalition NDC on Saturday, were his personal opinions.

Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga has called out ODM leader Raila Odinga over what he termed as his empty promises to the people of Western Kenya.

Speaking at Mianga market during a Kenya Kwanza Alliance rally, Mwambu alleged that the former premier played a key role in bringing down Mumias Sugar Company.

Mabonga claimed that Raila is part of those who squandered the cash meant to operate the once giant miller.

This comes a day after Azimio La Umoja coalition held a rally in Bungoma led by its presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

He went further to say that Raila is not a farmer and that’s why he cannot relate to the problems that face the farmers in western region.

“Raila was here two months ago and he promised that by the time the farmers from this region begin preparing their farms for planting season, the fertilizer prices would have gone down two the normal price, yesterday he was in Bungoma and he didn’t mention a thing about it, “he said.

Mabonga went ahead to say that the handshake government is busy using the funds meant for the fertilizer to form political parties all over the country which after the election will be compressed under Jubilee instead of using the funds to benefit the citizens.

He went on to rubbish Mukhisa Kituyi’s move to pull his weight behind Raila Odinga after dropping his presidential bid saying that he doesn’t have any influence there for he is unable to pinpoint one standing project that he has done for the people of western.

“That is an old man who has no agenda for this country and that’s why we should decide as one come 9th of August to send him home,” he said.

According to the senior counsel, President Kenyatta must clarify whether his interest in the succession politics is personal, family or national.

The lawyer who represented President Kenyatta during the 2017 presidential election petition went ahead to claim that the first in command must be ignored by Kenyans if his interest in the current politics is personal or family based.

Further, the lawyer argues that President Kenyatta had been given 10 years by Kenyans to deal with national issues.

“For H.E UHURU to MAKE SENSE to Mt Kenya & other Kenyans he must explain:”THE PURPOSES OF HIS POST RETIREMENT POLITICS”. Is his “POST RETIREMENT POLITICS” personal, family or national? If its personal/family he MUST BE IGNORED! If it is national, DIDN’T WE GIVE HIM 10 YRS TO DO IT?” tweeted the lawyer.

President Kenyatta while endorsing the former prime minister argued that his deputy William Ruto has not reformed and that he can only be considered if he tores the line in future.

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has lashed out at President Uhuru Kenyatta for imposing a president of his choice to the people.

The Ford Kenya party leader while speaking at Ford Kenya offices in Bungoma told the head of state to focus on finishing his term and retire peacefully.

Wetangula who had met Ford Kenya aspirants from Bungoma said that President Kenyatta should dare to embrace politicking above tribes and community asking him to pave way for the Kenyans to choose the leader of their choice.

This comes barely hours after the Sagana 3 meeting whereby President Kenyatta openly declared his support for ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“Take the example of your predecessor the former president Mwai Kibaki, when he finished his term he let Kenyans decide on who to be their President and God gave you the grace to be and so you should also do that and let the people decide, ”he said.

Wetangula went further to say that the constitution does not grant Uhuru the power and the authority to impose a puppet on Kenyans telling him to stop using the public resource in support of his own choice.

“Mr. President stop using public resources to determine your successor because am sure the Sagana meeting spend public resources. If there is public resources to play public politics then access that money to everyone and let us fight, ”he said.

The national chairman of Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Johnson Muthama has stirred mixed reactions on the internet after sending his birthday wishes to ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The former Prime Minister on January 7, 2022 marked his 77th birthday.

Joining other Kenyans in wishing Raila well on his special day was the former Machakos County Senator, who was once his political loyalist.

Muthama who is currently a staunch supporter of DP Ruto through his official Twitter account said that the hustler nation was wishing Raila good health as he celebrates his special day.

Muthama who has declared his interest in the Machakos County gubernatorial seat shared a photo of him with Raila at a past political event, with the caption catching the attention of netizens.

“Happy Birthday Jakom (Raila Odinga). The Hustler Nation wishes you good health as you celebrate your special day,” reads Muthama’s post.

A section of netizens while reacting to the post hailed Muthama for displaying what they termed as statesmanship.

Some argued that the UDA chairman had demonstrated that he is indeed a leader.

“Now, this is leadership. Very good gesture from you sir. We may disagree on some issues but we are all Kenyans. Baba the 5th,” posted one of the netizens.

“Now u have my vote as governor machakos. This has earned you my vote,” another Twitter user called Kevine Oscar reacted.

Muthama was in Raila’s NASA camp during the last 2017 general elections, but did not defend his senate seat. During the 2013 general elections, he was also in Raila’s CORD camp, winning the Machakos senatorial seat on a Wiper party ticket, which was an affiliate of the coalition.

Below are some of the reactions from Muthama’s post.
