A women’s group has launched a nationwide program dubbed HOPES, DREAMS AND DIGNITY.

The initiative aims at raising hopes and aspirations of women and youth in Kenya as it rallies them to vote for dignified leaders in the upcoming August 9 polls.

It was rolled out in Siaya County over the weekend and will address the challenge of accessing sanitary, underwear and shoes to school going children, ensure this is highlighted across the country and improve enrolment rates in schools.

Siaya Senator James Orengo, hailed the initiative as very important in raising the status and position of women in society, especially during this general election campaigns season.

The Senator, vying for the Siaya gubernatorial seat called on Kenyans to bequeath the country with dignified leaders during the next general elections, affirming people with tainted records cannot be trusted with leadership as he urged voters to reject such leaders.

“The word dignity is in our constitution. Therefore, every human being must have respect. We want leaders who have respect and can be respected,” he said.

The initiatives Founders unanimously selected Senator James Orengo as the inaugural national champion winner, making him the first County patron to be chosen.

From his days as a student to his latter political life, the founders said Senator Orengo has been at the forefront of challenging Kenyas governance system -which itself was meant to deliver the hopes of our young democracy.

His efforts can be directly attributed to the realization of canyons dream for better governance through the Devolution system and the decentralization of power from the executive, said Senior Government Advisor and one of Hopes, Dreams and Dignity founding Champions, Elizabeth Adongo.

The initiative will go round the country to sensitize the youth on the need to carry themselves with dignity during the campaigns.

Another founding member, Ruth Mueni urged the youth to vote wisely during the forth coming general elections and shun leaders inciting them to violence.

The initiative will, apart from the peace campaigns, be donating food and sanitary towels to the vulnerable youths, she said.

The initiative recognizes and celebrates leaders who have inspired hope and secured dreams of residents by giving them opportunity to live a dignified life through provision of clean and reliable water, access to healthcare services and better governance.

It distributed sanitary towels to select Schools in Bondo, Rarieda and Gem Constituencies. More than 5,000 students have benefited from this program so far.

Residents of Bar Atheng in Ugunja, Siaya County were on Saturday July 3, 2021 treated to a drama when former police spokesperson Charles Owino and Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi publicly clashed during the burial of 2017 Siaya Woman Representative aspirant Florence Aluodo.

Siaya County Governor Cornell Rasanga’s 2022 succession politics took center stage as Owino and Wandayi vowed to outsmart each other in the 2022 Siaya Gubernatorial race.

Mr. Owino said that will be seeking the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket in the upcoming nominations, daring Mr. Wandayi to rig him out.

While trying to woo voters, the long-serving police boss promised to transform the county for the better.

Mr Owino, who has since been moved to the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons as a deputy director, accused Mr Wandayi of conspiring to deny Ms Aluodo victory despite winning the ODM primaries in 2017.

Mr Wandayi, however, denied the allegations and assured Mr Owino that the party’s primaries and next year’s polls will be free and fair.

The Ugunja MP told Mr Owino to prepare to face him in the ODM primaries which he said will be free and fair, and accept whichever results will come out.

Mr Wandayi said that the ODM party is continuing with preparations for the 2022 General Election even as they wait for the Court of Appeal ruling on the Building Bridges Initiative set for August 20.

Ms Aludo died of Covid-19 complications while undergoing treatment at Mater Hospital in Nairobi.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has narrated how mourners from Nairobi’s Kibra traveled all the way from Nairobi to Siaya.

Unfortunately, a coronavirus patient was among the mourners, leading to seven coronavirus infections in Siaya County.

According to CS Kagwe , the Kenyan citizen from Kibera left for the Siaya burial without the authority to travel.

“There are seven new cases in Siaya and the story is a sad one because the departure point of that case is Kibera,” Kagwe said on Thursday.

“…you are in Kibera and leave for a burial without the authority or travel document signed.”

Kagwe said the police officers thought the forged documents were genuine and gave way to the mourners to travel through roadblocks.

“.. the seven mourners are all positive and were identified by contact teams in Siaya. There is a reason why we lock down places…” he said.

Kagwe said that instead of going to the burial to bury one, they might suffer the same fate.

A catholic priest who left Rome and arrived in Ugunja, Siaya County and presided over a funeral mass over the weekend has tested positive for coronavirus.

An emergency team in Siaya is currently doing contact tracking of all those faithful who interacted with the priest.

This comes just a moment after three Kakamega County officials who came back from a trip in Italy were put under mandatory quarantine after they failed to do so.

Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya ordered the officials into quarantine for 14 days, with an emergency response team also kicking off the process of tracking all those who had contact with the officials.

On Sunday, Kilifi County Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi was forced into quarantine by the state after he failed to do so.

Mr Saburi has hence tested positive for COVID-19, and there are fears that he might have infected other Kilifi residents.

He is said to have come from Germany, and ignored government’s order to quarantine himself for 14 days.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Sunday said that Mr Saburi will be charged for going against the public health act.

Currently, the government has kicked off the process of tracking all the people that had contact with Mr Saburi.

He is said to have attended funeral service among other events within Kilifi County.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi who had contact with his deputy is currently isolating himself.

In a press statement issued on Sunday March 22, 2020, Governor Kingi noted that he had tested negative for the virus.

A postmortem report released on Saturday, November 23, has revealed how The Star correspondent in Siaya County Eric Oloo was killed.

According to the report, Oloo was hit by a blunt object in the head and abdomen, resulting in excess internal bleeding that led to his death.

Pathologist Gabriel Juma shared the report details with the media.

Oloo’s body was on Thursday morning (November 21) found dead in the house of his alleged lover, Sabina Kerubo, 36, a deputy OCS at Ugunja Police Station.

It is alleged that Oloo, 41, found other men in Sabina’s house on Wednesday night, resulting in the fatal confrontation.

Ugunja Sub-County Police Commander, Ibrahim Muchuma, on Thursday told journalists that Kerubo was arrested alongside her daughter, house-help, and a middle-aged man identified only as Victor, who is said to be a chef in Ugunja Town.

Muchuma revealed that Kerubo’s landlord, Moses Ochieng, reported at Ugunja Police Station that Kerubo had — on Wednesday night — gone to his house to request for his vehicle so that she could take her “ailing” husband to hospital.

The landlord said that upon reaching Kerubo’s house, he saw Oloo lying lifeless on the floor, with cut injuries in his head.

Ochieng, thereafter, alerted police, who arrived at the scene of crime and arrested Kerubo, her daughter, house-help and the said-Ugunja Town chief, Victor.

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has put Siaya County Assembly on spot after a name of a dead member was listed among those who travelled to Jinja, Uganda in February.

A report by the anti-graft agency indicates that Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) stage-managed the controversial trip after they travelled to the Kenya-Ugandan Border.

It is claimed that the MCAs only had their passports stamped and returned home without attending a workshop in Uganda on the said trip.

Upon their investigation, EACC were shocked that the late Mr Joanes Andiego Odongo’s name was included in the list.

At the time of his death, Mr Odongo was the Central Sakwa MCA who also served as the Majority Whip at the assembly.

The MCA died on May 17, 2018, after a long battle with liver and kidney complications.

He was later succeeded by his son Charlton Andiego in the subsequent by-election.

According to the documents in possession of the EACC, the late MCA made it to the trip and was paid all the allowances.

However, in their defence, the county assembly noted that there was an alleged mix-up in the names.

County Assembly Speaker George Okode told the Nation on phone that as a requirement for controls on foreign trips, MCAs were expected to get clearance from the Ministry of Devolution and while doing so, the secretariat that was organising the trip could have generated the erroneous list by mistake.

“When I asked the clerk, who keeps the records he told me that the list had been generated and sent to the ministry for clearance and it was only realised later that it had some errors, “ stated Mr Okode.

He further noted that they had all the evidence that the trip happened, including photos and video recordings of the training in a hotel in Jinja.

According to the document dated January 21 and signed by the assembly clerk, a total of 43 MCAs had been proposed to attend a benchmarking-cum-training at the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation (LVFO) in Jinja, from February 1 to 15.

During the stay, each legislator pocketed Ksh136,144 and a further transport allowance of Ksh10,000.

All the others were entitled to the same amounts apart from the Speaker who in the document is indicated was to receive Ksh184,346.

The EACC has summoned 41 Siaya MCAs to shed light on the controversial trip.

The ward reps are expected to appear before the detectives in Kisumu from Monday next week to be questioned and to record statements.
