More than 400 SportPesa employees, who were rendered jobless on October 2 after their contracts were terminated, were on Friday, November 1, issued with redundancy notices.

The meeting was called by the firm’s head of human resources, Terry Wanja Njagi, via an email dated Thursday, October 31, and addressed to all ex-staff members.

And, in their hundreds, the former employees of Kenya’s leading betting firm trooped to the Chancery Building on Valley Road, Nairobi on Friday ahead of the 11am convention that they hoped would see them get their jobs back.

However, that did not happen.

According to sources who spoke to local dailies, the meeting, which lasted less than 20 minutes, yielded only one message: that all the employees’ termination letters have been withdrawn, and replaced with redundancy letters.

“They [SportPesa management] did not give us the information we expected [that we’ll have our jobs back]. In the extremely brief meeting, they said that our termination letters were withdrawn, and that we will, instead, be served with redundancy notices as the Kenyan labour law demands,” said an informant, who spoke to a local daily on condition of anonymity.

In an October 31, the company’s CEO Captain Ronald Karauri said via a letter: “We refer you to our notice of termination of employment dated October 2, 2019. By copy of this letter, please consider the said-notice withdrawn with immediate effect and the content therein nullified.”

Betin has announced that it would be closing down 500 retail outlets, rendering another 2,500 Kenyans jobless.

The firm said in a statement that the government’s hard stance left it with no option but to issue its staff with redundancy notices.

They will join thousands of Kenyans who have lost their jobs since July in a wave of layoffs by companies seeking to remain afloat.

This has created fear among Kenyans working in both formal and informal sectors.

Betin joins other betting firms in the country that have laid off their workers after they failed to meet the tax obligations.

In an earlier statement, the firm had announced that its employees will be rendered redundant on October 31, 2019.

“In view of the above, we have had financial constraints as you might all expect. As a result of the deterioration of the profitability, the management has had to rethink its operational model and to proceed with the exercise of termination on account of redundancy,” wrote Betin in their statement.

Sportpesa also closed its shops in Kenya laying off all their employees.

After betting giants SportPesa announced on Saturday that it has ceased operations in Kenya, it is now left with only five markets across the world.

The United Kingdom, Italy, South Africa, Tanzania and the Isle of Man are the five remaining markets SportPesa is left with.

The company says its European market is headquartered in Liverpool, the United Kingdom.

“Having established strong partnerships with some of the biggest football clubs in the UK, we are proud to have our new European head office in the stunning Royal Liver building in Liverpool,” says SportPesa.

Besides the UK, the firm has markets in other European territories, including Italy and the Isle of Man, which is a self-governing British Crown dependency in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland.

“As proud sponsors of Torino F.C. SportPesa is excited to add Italy to its portfolio of operations, and we look forward to extending our product offering and first-class service to Italian customers,” says SportPesa on its website.

In Africa, the firm has markets in Tanzania and South Africa, besides Kenya, which it has since suspended its operations in.

“From our office in beautiful Cape Town, SportPesa has recently secured a landmark four-year deal with the city’s leading football team, Cape Town City FC,” says the firm on its website.

“SportPesa sponsor three of Tanzania’s most popular and successful football teams, including 26-time Tanzania league champions, Yanga SC,” says the bookmaker.

On Saturday, September 28, SportPesa announced it was stopping operations in Kenya until the “hostile business environment” in the country improves.
