Vihiga

Vihiga county governor Wilbur Ottichilo has told ward administrators that their jobs would be at stake “if the rivals out there come in”.

Speaking when he launched the performance contracting for county staff at Mbale on Thursday, Ottichilo said his administration was under pressure to deliver services.

The County chief now wants county ward administrators to fight for his government to protect their jobs.

“You must be in every public function that takes place in your areas to defend the government. I have asked the CECs and directors to facilitate you so you can work,” Ottichilo was quoted by a local daily.

He asked residents to be patient because county governments have not received funds for the first quarter this financial year following the standoff between the Senate and National Assembly on revenue sharing.

“Some people are so impatient that they want things done immediately but they must also appreciate other dynamics. We have spent time putting in place structures and building institutions to ensure quality services regardless of who’s in office,” he said.

Ottichilo has been under intense pressure from his opponents who have accused him of wasting a lot of time on planning instead of rolling out development.

The governor has in the past said that he inherited an empty country Treasury and a government without structures.

He has sacked some staff whom he said were irregularly hired and cleaned the county payroll of ghost workers, including relatives of former county employees and MCAs who received salaries without working.

Deputy President Dr William Ruto has continued to poke holes in areas believed to be his rivals’ strongholds ahead of his 2022 political gameplan.

On Friday, businesses came into standstill in Luanda as Dr Ruto made triumph entry to Mumboha grounds, within the expansive Vihiga County which is believed to be ODM leader Raila Odinga’s stronghold and the home for ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi.

The DP graced a women’s empowerment programme in Luanda.

It was the third trip to the county which is headed by ODM governor Wilberforce Otchillo. Thousands lined up to have a glimpse at Dr Ruto, who had earlier graced an event at Chesumei constituency.

Dr Bonie Khalwale, one of his chief campaigners, lauded the attendance, which he admits that was unique given the voting patterns of Western region.

A quarrel between two brothers in a village in Vihiga County has left one of them dead after he was allegedly hit on the head with a blunt object.

Following the incident, police are holding the 45-year-old man reported to have killed his brother on Tuesday.

The two had quarrelled over who should prepare their meal.

The incident happened in Mang’únyuli village in Sabatia.

ANGERED

According to Izava Location Chief Alex Ukiru who confirmed the incident, the suspect, Mr Patrick Simwa, was angered after his younger brother, Evans Alumasa, 30, asked him to cook the food the victim had brought home.

Simwa hit Alumasa on the head killing him on the spot, Mr Ukiru said.

Mr Simwa is being held at Kilingili Police Station as officers launch investigations into the incident that has shocked the quiet village located a few kilometres from Mbale town.

NO WORK

Mr Ukiri said the suspect does not work and spends the whole day at home as his brother fends for him. They were staying in the same house.

”The suspect was angered when his brother asked him to cook food. He told his younger brother off, saying he was not his wife. Alumasa slapped him prompting the suspect to retaliate by hitting him on the head using a blunt object,” said Mr Ukiru.

He noted that the two are not married and do not have children.

”The land where they are living was bought by their father and they stay in the same house. Simwa does not do any work and depends on his younger brother to fend for him,” he said.

The body of the dead man was taken to Vihiga County Referral Hospital mortuary in Mbale.
